TIP: Turbo Charging your Topic Studies

There have been a few questions about how to get more topically based information from our Logos libraries. Below is a suggestion to use a customized Topic Guide (TG) to turbo charge your topical based studies. One prerequisites is assumed in my suggested custom topic guide:

You have collections already set up. If not refer here to get some set up without significant effort. There are also many examples of collections on the Logos Wiki.

When you customize your TG by adding collections, when you open that new section the TG will run a search for your topic using "heading text". While this is not perfect, it will open your library with some really good results. Go here to learn how to customize a guide.

Here is My Topic Guide:

It is set up to accommodate the following types of topics: books of the Bible, people places and things, theological topics and counseling topics.

Here are a few examples and additional tips:

Gospel of Luke

Select the Factbook from the topic section to open and review the great material available there.

If you select to search Background, Logos will open a search results window and display all the resources from that collections. This way you do not need to continually click on the more button. You can display by article or by resource.

lf you move the search box to the left pane and then select send searches here, you can use this same search window for all your searches. I find this keeps the layout organized.

Here is an example of a topical study of the Synoptic Gospels:

Here is the Theology collection results:

Here is an example of Antioch. Note that by selecting in the related verses section I can view only those verses in my preferred Bible.

Here is the a few other sections in the TG:

Here is a topical study layout on Eschatology with related verses in the Bible.

Here is clicking on the search Theology results for eschatology:

Finally here is one on Anxiety with related verses.

  • Tips: if you do not want to continually click the "more" button, you can run a search on that collection. I move my search to the far left and select send searches here.
  • I have my bible in the center and use it to read the related verses in a filtered format.
  • I run a Facebook search from the TG and move the Facebook to the left as well.

The resulting layout can be saved as a template for future topical studies. I apologize if this is too much info, but hope it provides some help in your topical studies.

Not to much information at all, John. You have some really good ideas. Thank you very much.

John, if you put "Tip" near the front of the title, I'm much more apt to remember to pick this up in the Reading List. And I do want tips to be a group effort as none of us know it all.

Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Done and I will do that for future posts. Thanks for reminding me.
