Question on Continental Commentary Series

I'm debating whether to upgrade to Lutheran Silver to obtain Dietrich B. for $79 bucks or go to Gold for $232 and add Continental Commentary Series.

How good is that series? They don't seem to be rank very high in Bestcommentaries.com - and by rank high I mean, they're not even in the top 10 or even 20 (Some are not even ranked at all). I'm not so impressed with the two free volumes FL gave away a few weeks ago. I'm not even impressed by Hermenia which seems to be too technical, though I love WBC and is "technical" in its own right.

What are your thoughts on Continental or should I stick with the cheaper option and settle for Dietrich B. and a few other resources? Thanks for your input/opinion/advice!

I've got Bonhoeffer on my wish list for $481. The product page does not say it's a part of the Lutheran base package! With the sale and dynamic pricing, silver is $233! Why is that not on the product page?!

You should double check that, because Bonhoeffer IS part of the Silver Lutheran BP. I might as well get it now before it changes...LOL...nah, Mark (the British MVP) got Bonhoeffer as part of Lutheran Silver, so it's been included for a while.

Oh well, I went for Lutheran Silver. I really don't need Continental Commentaries anyway. I have plenty. My final set I'll probably get in the future is NICOT/NT and after that, I'll just buy resources as needed or if something new comes out. For now, I'll definitely enjoy Dietrich B.'s writings. For 79 bucks, you can't beat that!

Continental is a very fine series. Genesis and Psalms are extremely well done. And very much favourites of mine. This series is particularly important because as the name suggests it is translations of commentaries done in europe. Offering views and insights not always caught by english speaking writers. Indeed I remember hearing at one time very serious Bible scholar should know german because so much important research had been published in that language. I see you have already made your mind up but CCS in my mind would have been a very important set to add on to your current works.

While I agree with Dan's assessment of the series, since you don't get much use out of Hermeneia and don't use the free/cheap offerings from the series, it seems that you made a good choice. (My tastes heavily favor technical commentaries; bestcommentaries.com voting seems to shy away from the real technical stuff, so I only rely on their reviews for volumes that are not specifically academic.)

Anyway, you can always upgrade to Lutheran Gold later. But there are also some pretty nifty other resources in Gold that are not in Silver, but you may already have some of them.

It's not on the product page because the Bonhoeffer set includes an additional volume not in the base package (it was released after the base package was put together).

The Continental Commentary series isn't a great series (IMO), although if you like 20th century German theology you'll like them. They're critical and fairly technical, not unlike Hermeneia. They take more of a theological approach than a strictly exegetical approach. They're fairly good on background (particularly ANE background), but sometimes I feel they simply miss the point of the text.
