Anyone want to run the Logos Android app on an E-Ink tablet or e-reader?

I'm starting over from scratch with the SD card and write to it exactly according to your instructions... Also, a factory reset to the Kobo...

Hi, sorry I've been out of radio contact for a while...
I don't have a clue as to why those patches aren't working for you. You're doing just what you're supposed to do, and trying all the options that people on Angor's blog suggested. It happened to work for me on the first try, for some reason! Yes, a factory reset of the Kobo is what I'd recommend. If you still have trouble with the patches, I'd go to that mobileread forum I gave you the link to in one of my posts in this thread. Someone there might have a better idea.

So get this, first I had to restart the writing the image to the SD Card as mentioned above. Then, I finally got the first patch to work. My Mac was automatically unzipping the downloaded file. I was able to download it into Windows without unzipping. Then I dragged the unzipped file into the .kobo folder on my Kobo Device. Then I unzipped it, in the .kobo folder with WinZip. Upon disconnecting it finally recognized it and restarted and updated.
Secondly, it took another while to figure out the second patch. Here is what worked: as opposed to above, I left the .zip of this file on my computer. I then opened it with Winzip and unzipped it to my pc and selected the .kobo folder on my Kobo device. Before, it had been putting a folder by the same name as the zip file on there. Now, it put multiple files and folders on it. Upon ejecting and disconnecting it worked!
Now I'm in Android!

Congratulations on your persistence! My, you had some unusual obstacle thrown at you at almost every step of the way! I hope that the Android setup process is kinder to you than that. You'll find that the settings are in Russian, but there is a post on Angor's blog that will help you pick the right options to change the language to English. When you shut down, you'll be presented with a German menu (this is a German port). The top option is shut down, the second is reboot. Not sure about the third. I had some problems with Play Store at first, in that it wouldn't download some apps due to some kind of error. But, after a couple of days, Play Store suddenly lost the errors. I have also found that wifi will disconnect on its own every now and then. No rhyme or reason to it. But Logos/Verbum works well, and you can read your resources on an E-Ink screen. The bar you'll see on the right controls the light intensity. The light won't work at all under 13%. You'll also find Button Savior, which allows you some navigation and to access app menus. Happy exploring!

Mark, thanks again! I've been downloading many of my titles the past day. When it comes to the Kindle app, you mentioned using the modified app. Is that the one at this address?
Also, how does that work? How does one install the modified app? And further, will it log-in to my Amazon account and sync all my books and highlights, etc?
Thanks!

That link isn't where I got the modified Kindle app, but it looks like the same one. The modified app is supposed to have a color scheme that looks a little better on E-Ink screens. I tried it, and then tried the "regular" Kindle app. Frankly, i see very little difference between the two. The reading experience as such is the same - actually, better on the "regular" app, because it's more up-to-date. So, my advice? Just download the regular Kindle app from the Play Store. Whichever Kindle you choose, it should be able to log in to your Amazon account and sync all your stuff. Still, I'd go with the regular app. It's what I use now.
If you want to try the modified app, download it directly onto your Aura HD by using the internet browser it has, or after installing the browser of your choice (I have good luck with Opera Classic). Opera will give you the option of opening the file once it is downloaded. Touch Open and it asks you if you want to install. Touch install and it does.

My kobo aura hd automatically updated to version 3.3 and now the android is no longer working. I have been searching around for this but haven't found a solution yet. I think if I can figure out how to downgrade and reinstall the android setup it will work. But just a warning to those who are considering this.

Strange. Mine upgraded to 3.3 a few weeks ago, and my Android setup wasn't affected. I wonder if reinstalling the two files that go in the .kobo folder would work for you. I don't have any other suggestions other than to try reinstalling.

How are things going with logos on your kobo? I've been having trouble with mine. At times everything will work fine but now most of the time my apps won't connect to the internet. I think it is connected maybe to an issue with my google accounts but with the current system I can't figure out how to delete a google account and add a new one (if I click "add account" in gmail it crashes).
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Wish I could help, but I no longer have my Kobo. I sold it when I found an E-Ink device that ran a newer version of Android natively and so had more flexibility. The Android setup on the Kobo was always rather touchy, and that version of Android on the Kobo hack (2.3.4) is getting long in the tooth! Maybe someone else who still uses the Kobo can help.

I don't blame you! I'm thinking about doing the same. Which new device did you buy? I'm thinking about getting the Onyx or Icarus devices which run it natively and have the 9 inch screens. What new device do you suggest?

You have to be careful about Onyx devices. Some of the larger ones aren't compatible with the most recent version of Logos/Verbum. My suggestions are either the Onyx C67ML Carta or the Boyue T62+. These devices are similar in a number of ways: 6 inch E-Ink Carta displays, 212 dpi, and they run Android 4.2.2. Both are compatible with the newest version of the Logos/Verbum app. The Boyue is a little thicker and heavier because it has a bigger battery and better battery life. The Boyue also has a larger partition for user-installed apps (1 GB compared to 350 mb for the Onyx). The Onyx is lighter (though the Boyue doesn't feel heavy by any means). Both have similar data storage space (8 gb), and both have a microSD card slot.
If you plan to use the device for only Logos and eBooks, then either will serve you well. If you want a number of apps on your device, get the Boyue. If you want extra battery life, get the Boyue. If you want the lightest possible device, get the Onyx.
If you want a larger device, like the Onyx M96, you'll need to install an older version of Logos on it. It will run fine, but a few resources may not run well on the older app version.

If resources are not compatible with the old version, they won't even open! [:S] (such as the Lexham Bible Dictionary, or the newer Themelios journals).
As for me, I'm waiting for an Android 6 reader, so that I can extend the internal memory with an SD card.

Thanks for the good info! I actually just bought the onyx boox i86. So it looks like I'll have to run the older versions of logos on it.
I will see what happens.
If it is too much trouble with the older version of logos there is a Beta of 4.4 for the i86 (http://ereader-store.de/en/content/8-downloads) with good instructions.
Hopefully things go smooth!

However, it's my understanding (for your sake, I'd love to be wrong) that the problem that the latest Logos app has with some Onyx devices (the T68, M96 and i86) isn't the version of Android they run (Logos apps work on 4.0+), but a limitation with the hardware of the devices themselves. It has to do with hardware acceleration features. For some reason, the Onyx C67 passes that test, while most other Onyx devices do not. The Nook Glowlight Plus runs Android 4.4, but if you install the newest Logos app and open any resource, you get a black screen. Same with the Onyx T68. You need the older Logos app to be able to view any resource. And, as others have said, incompatible resources will simply crash the app. Faithlife officially doesn't support Android E-Ink devices because of these issues.
I wish I could offer you more encouraging news. Hopefully, your results will be better.0 -
Yes! I really want to do this! I just bought a Boyue T62 assuming that it would be possible to run Logos. This would be especially good since they are retiring the 'Send to Kindle' function. Please Logos!

Can you clarify what older version works on the M96?

Can you clarify which older version works on the M96, I was able to download and install 4.3.9 and it works, however the hebrew doesn't render correctly. Would a later version fix this? it renders fine on my Nexus phone since ice cream sandwich. Hebrew is all I use logos for. Thanks for your time.
Thanks

You need version 4.3.9. There was a link on one of these threads to where you could get it. Maybe someone else knows where it is. I no longer have an E-Ink device, so I deleted my copy. (Sorry!) A word to the wise, however: More and more resources are being updated, and will only work properly with more recent versions of the Logos app. Version 4.3.9. will still run on your device, and many resources will still work. But you may find frustrating the number that do not.
Edit: Oops, misread your post. Yes, a later version of the app will fix that problem, but may not work on the M96! Again, be aware that many resources and features will not work on older versions of the app.

A newer version of Android is required to fix Hebrew rendering. Please see https://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html (and search the page for Hebrew).
