I am looking at the life of Joseph. Is there a way to filter out either the late or early dates?

Not that I know of ... but such a filter would be a very good idea ... or at least a sort that put all early's together

You should be able to filter using the 'Filter' box in the upper right. I set similar date ranges, then filtered on:
Joseph -"(Early)"
I got everything with Joseph, but without (Early). (I used the quotes and parens just to make sure I only filtered the word early when used at the end as a label.)

Ah yes - complex expressions as filters ... I clearly need to use the timeline more often.
