Notes Highlighting Improvements?

I don't really want to stir the pot, but once again last week I was confronted with what seems to me a long time inadequacy in note highlighting.

For lower cost Continuing Education (no travel), I've taken to purchasing Logos commentaries on Bible books for which I'd like to either teach or develop sermon series. I do LOTS of highlighting in those books.

This year, I studied Genesis & John & set up a study layout for each. My intent was to have a separate note file for each, as well. As often, when I changed layouts from Genesis to John, I forgot at 1st to set up a new highlight note file & change the defaults to it. By the time I discovered it, I had about 2,000 John highlights in the Genesis highlights note file.

I checked the Wiki to see if any better method than drag-and-drop from one file to the other was available. I also checked to see if I could do it manually with File Explorer. Nope. The notes are all in a database, & there are no individual files. There's nothing new to help since folks 1st complained about it in L4.It took me about 3hr (....O--N--E......A--T.....A....T--I--M--E....) to move all the notes into the correct file. I only crashed L6 once (trying to hurry the process; drag & drop gets slower & slower, despite an i7, 16GbRAM, & SSD to improve performance).

So here's my request, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE:

Please consider a bulk move function similar to the way windows handles drag & drop of files. Could we left click on the 1st & last notes while holding the shift key down, then drag & drop all selected notes to the new location? Please?

Thanks for listening.

Grace & Peace,
Bill

    Bill try this-

    1) create a duplicate pallet of your john hilites (do not rename it)

    2) make that resource your hilites in Genesis

    3) open up a Genesis resource and see if you can turn it off/ on to see if it works

Not sure if this will work- but worth a shot

Forgot- make sure you untick the original pallet in the Genesis resource before trying the duplicate

I am unsure what you are trying to solve, but that will only help with NEW notes, it won't magically move anything.

That would be a start, but honestly, they should have a better means for moving notes anyway. [:s]

I don't quite follow what you were doing...

Is your intent to have a note document per resource or per theme? Logos now has a setting which will create a new note document per RESOURCE, and this is what I recommend. If you wanted to highlight in 12 different books on the "theme" of "john" and have all of those notes in the same document, your best bet is to either use the "last used note document" setting or to do what Whydell suggested... I don't think that is a good solution, however.

The decision by FL to tie highlights to pallets was, lets say, "less than inspired." Personally, when I am using the desktop app and highlighting, I use keyboard shortcuts. Whydell's method (others use it as well) eliminates that as a possibility... or, at least, makes it much more complicated. For example: I use "Y" for "Yellow Highlighter." If a user is creating multiple pallets for multiple resources or themes, he is stuck with using a different keyboard shortcut for each pallet... and remembering which one goes to which pallet/document.

Er ... ah ... it makes sense to me to be able to group highlights into logical groups ... many of my pallets are method specific or subject specific ... which is how I want to turn them on and off in the visual filters option. What are you suggesting as a better alternative.

I just want all of my highlights for John on study leave in a John study leave file. I didn't want them visible in any other context. I am NOT setting up separate palette of highlights for anything. I am using the abbreviations heavily in order to change highlight styles.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I am just hoping that Faith life will make it easier to move a bunch of notes from one file to another.

Most users "just want to highlight." In your case, it might be best to have it set up that way. However, you can still do it that way by using the "last used note document" method. For most users who want topical documents, that might be better. Your method would be clearly better if users had a limited number of highlight styles they wanted to use in very specific note documents. Else, how does it make sense to have 20 keyboard shortcuts for "yellow highlighter" to cover 20 topics? If the user is going to highlight ONE resource and send highlights to FIVE documents, how is it easier to switch between FIVE identical pallets instead of FIVE note documents? It isn't. Rather, it would be easier to have one pallet, with keyboard shortcuts, and switch between note documents when you want to send them there. I did that for 2+ ye before "resource specific" was made a choice.

Although I can see the need for 1 or 2 generic highlights, I can't imagine using the same highlight to mean many different things ... the ambiguity would essentially erase the whole purpose of the visual highlight.

BillS's approach is the one I would be most apt to promote ... despite his unfortunate memory lapse putting a number of notes in the wrong file. I strongly support his request for a mass move ... not only for corrections but also to promote reusability on new projects.

I could not agree more! Ive been wishing for such a feature for a loooooong time! Notes and highlight both need much more work.

On reflection, I'd amend my request to the ability to mass SELECT, with move, copy, or... then working as now. [:D]
