Reincarnation

My Apologetics class is also studying reincarnation. I did a search on this but got very little information. In fact all I got was Heb. 9:27. I would like to search the journals, etc. and find something. Any tips?
Thanks,
Susan Murphy

I'd try Factbook, Topic Guide, and Reincarnation and Christianity by Robert Morey.
You could also try a heading field search in headings reincarnation.

There is a cheap book here that has some information. I read it awhile back and found a couple useful things.

The Early Church Fathers will fill in the argument in the early church over the concept:
Ecclesiastical Writers
St. Irenaeus Adv. Haer. 2.33.1–2
Tertullian Apol. 48
Origen Comm. Jo. 6.7
Lactantius Lact., Epitome 36
Arnobius Arnob., Adv. Gent. 2.14–15
St. Basil the Great Hom. in Hexaem. 8.2
St. Gregory of Nyssa De hom. opif. 28.3
St. Ambrose De excessu fratris 2.65–66
St. John Chrysostom Hom. Jo. 2.3
See also: Soul; Immortality; Superstition
Andrew Jones et al., eds., Catholic Topical Index (Bellingham, WA: Verbum, 2013).For some of the scripture used for a pro stance:
REINCARNATION. we die once Heb. 9:27; alleged proofs of: Matt. 11:14; 17:3, 12; 27:49; Mark 9:13; Luke 9:8; John 1:21
James Swanson and Orville Nave, New Nave’s Topical Bible (Oak Harbor: Logos Research Systems, 1994).Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."

Do you know if the Tutor plans to invite any speakers that have actually been reincarnated?
I would be interested to hear how the class goes!

Susan, if you own IVP dictionaries on the NT (Jesus and the Gospels, NT background, Paul and his letters, Later NT) you should find interesting results from a simple search for "reincarnation". In particular -- although I am not sure whether this would be interesting to you for your purposes -- you can read on the beliefs of the Greeks and Romans with regard to reincarnation (often in contrast to resurrection). This provides a very helpful background for understanding not only the fact that the NT speaks of bodily resurrection, but also NOT of reincarnation, and that this was the message proclaimed in the Christian mission. Remember Acts 17 and the sneering at the idea of resurrection as soon as Paul mentioned it. Check also commentaries on this passage for possible background info).

Thanks for your great tips. I read the book "Reincarnation" by Robert Morey. It is tremendous. Also, I appreciate your screen prints. They are very helpful.Phil Gons (Faithlife) said:I'd try Factbook, Topic Guide, and Reincarnation and Christianity by Robert Morey.

I'll check into this. I do not have the IVP dictionaries but may get some of them. I'm learning all kind of things. This is amazing.
Thanks for the tips.

Mike Binks,
I think you're joking about the "Tutor", but I'm not sure.
Actually, I have a Buddhist manicurist that I've been witnessing to about 2 years and I know she believes in reincarnation. I'm going to ask her this question. Does she actually know anybody that's been reincarnated? She's actually one of the hardest people I've ever witnessed to. I gave her a Vietnamese Bible and she gave it away to a relative. I was so disappointed, but I'm not giving up on her. All the tips are really helping. I feel like I'm getting a Master's degree with everyone's help through Logos.

Jan,
I love to read things by Norman Geisler but I think I'm going to wait and see if Logos adds it to their books by Geisler and then get it.
Thanks for the info,
Susan

Not entirely true. Super quick web search for the gnostics http://reluctant-messenger.com/origen10.html
For a comparative religion review of the early Christian stance see http://www.comparativereligion.com/reincarnation3.html This is valuable for its discussion of why reincarnation cannot easily fit into Christianity.
Note that the term transmigration of souls is more common than reincarnation in the early writings, I think ... I haven't actually gotten any statistics.
Orthodox Bishop Alfeyev: "To be a theologian means to have experience of a personal encounter with God through prayer and worship."; Orthodox proverb: "We know where the Church is, we do not know where it is not."
