Android 6.0 Adoptable storage

Has the new SD card functionality known as Adoptable Storage been tested as a means to expand the capbilities of a device to have Logos books storage beyond the limits of the device's built-in internal storage?

Any users had any luck getting it to work? I am still running Android 4.4.2 but will be upgrading to 6 soon. I know the new storage feature won't work on my current phone, but for some reason I am showing the app is already using my SD card (not that I am complaining in ANY way or reporting it as a bug!).

I'm running android 6 on a 3rd gen moto g. I have a 64gb SD card. Setting it up in android was glitchy with progress stuck on 20% for a few hours. However it now seems to work. The dialogues which tell you where an app is stored now all say internal although the internal storage has lots of free space and the card is fairly full with 40gb of data in it. I've added a lot of videos for the kids etc. I haven't noticed Logos running more slowly but I would suggest getting a fast card which is what I have.

I have 356 resources downloaded to the phone which mostly represents my fav commentary sets and lexicons. Since much more is on the phone than over the internet generally the app feels faster and more fluid to use. Startup may be slightly longer from cold (after phone powered down or app quit - but that's a rare event).

The feature is supposed to semi replace internal storage with the SD Card at a system level where it should make no difference to apps. I couldn't tell you with 100% certainty that Logos is on the SD card but even if it isn't then the SD card has freed up enough space for me to get that many resources on the phone. I'm pretty sure it's on the SD card though.

Interesting. I am running a Note 2, which is about 4 years old at this point. I *think* at some point I hit the "move to SD card" button shown in my screenshot, but I'm not sure. That is the only way I can figure my data wound up there. In any case it has been that way for a while and running fine as far as I can tell even though not officially supported. Again, Android 4.4.2, so NOT using adoptable storage.

I have multiple GB of data stored by the Verbum app on my SD card, and I am not using the adoptable storage feature either.

I'm not SN, but every version of Android I have ever used (through Kit Kat, I think) has had an option under Storage to designate either the phone's internal storage or the SD card as the "default write disk." If I select the latter, Logos resources (as well as data from many other apps) have always gone to the SD card with zero problems.

I don't know why more people don't know about this.

Thanks for the reply, Sean. The reason I have not pursued this is because of the consistent response from FL that such configurations are not supported. But it's worth a shot! I'll try it. I mean, the worst that can happen is my phone will melt. [:P]

More likely would be some difficulties using apps that are already using phone storage--they may need to be moved to the SD card or reinstalled. I think it gives some warning to that effect. The first thing I do whenever I get a new phone or do a reset is change this setting, so I've not had any complications, but it's best to be careful and backup etc. first. (Ironically, on my current phone I've got everything in internal storage because the SD card stopped working after one too many drops. [:(])

Faithlife doesn't support these scenarios because of the lack of consistency and standardization among the many different versions of Android and the Android device manufacturers who customize Android to their liking. We simply don't have the bandwidth to support every device/vendor/Android version combination regarding installing/moving/copying/running our apps (and related files) on/to/from SD cards.

We've never said any of this won't or can't work, just that we don't support it.

That has nothing to do with the Android version.

The manufacturers either enable that option or they don't.

Mine shows the same (Samsung S5 Mini), and says I have 1.7GB from Verbum on the SD card. However, if I run a disk analysis, the 1.7GB from Verbum is actually on the internal card, not the external SD. [:(]

In recent versions of Android, you will see in your favorite file manager "sdcard" and something like "extsd". In a case like this, "sdcard" is a partition in internal storage. People can easily be confused by that. You need to look for "extsd" or something like that. That is your external sd card. Android 6 (Marshmallow) allows you to move personal files from the internal sdcard to your external sdcard. I have tried it with my Nexus 7 and it works with my Verbum files. YMMV, of course. On some devices, the ability has been there to do that (in principle) since KitKat (Android 4.4) at least, but not all devices support that, as we have discovered!

Please feel free to list on the new thread whether your device allows that feature.

I've been upgraded to Android 6 by now, and adoptable storage works great. It can be enabled manually without root even when the manufacturer has disabled it.

Android 4.4.2 is NOT using adoptable storage. If you already have the SD card, you don't need this adoptable storage
