Are these both the same thing with minor variations?
I ask as Logos points to the Walvoord under the top one stating
"For more verse-by-verse commentary check out The Bible Knowledge Commentary."
I bought the top one this week and wondered if I needed to....thanks.
Joshua in Rhode Island
The first one deals with the background to the relevant passage, so will give details of geography, culture, customs, etc. The second one is a verse-by-verse commentary that will go further than the background commentaries, but will probably not go into the background as deeply. There are a number of background commentaries available in Logos, like the IVP Old and New Testament background commentaries, and the Zondervan background commentaries.
I normally consult a background commentary whenever I'm speaking on a passage, before looking at other commentaries. If you don't have a background commentary already, it's well worth investing in one, although I can't speak for this particular one as I don't have it.
Thanks Greg. I just asked a salesperson but he never came back to the im session after letting me know they are similar.
I own the Walvoord but wondered if the Background was really necessary if the Walvoord covered the same territory.
Sorry for being obtuse or thick here....would you say both are necessary or just one please?
The Walvoord deals with problem passages, aspects of the language, literary structure, etc and will talk a little about the geography and customs. The background commentary focuses on the historical, geographical and cultural context and background but won't deal with the linguistic matters or attempt to explain what problem passages or grammar structures might mean. They're both doing different things. So, although neither is necessary, I doubt they overlap to any significant degree. I use a background commentary for a different purpose from a technical, expository or devotional commentary. So you won't be wasting money by having both in your armoury.
Thanks for your time and input Greg. You rock! [:)]
There is significant amount of difference that I shall keep the new background one - which from what I see is also well written.
Dan, the Zondervan never came down in price in Logos (as I hoped).
I own the IVP Bible Background too. Having doubts again...sigh.
What do you all think reading here...vote for the one you think is best below...would you keep them all?
Keep 'em all. [Y][H]
would you keep them all?
I have them all—and Zondervan. I plan to keep them all. YMMV
Jack and Matthew...I am going to keep mine too. God bless you all (Dan too)
I never meant to imply you shouldn't keep them more that I didn't think I needed them. They were not a horrible price, they just did not jump out to me as something I needed beyond my many resources I already have.

Too much money for background information most commentaries give you in their background section and interwoven in the text.
I have them all—and Zondervan. I plan to keep them all.
I am also thinking the Bible translators - for them all the background info is very useful
I have the ivp, zondervan, and bkbc. I have found them all useful at some point and each usually comments on something different. I recently bought the bible history commentary but haven't had much time to dig into that one. If you want a comparison of each let me know and I can do it later tonight. The background is usually my favorite to research.
