Help requested with Boyue T62+

Following the announcement of the demise of the Send to Kindle service, I've been using my new Boyue T62+ Android eReader device to read my Logos books. I'm new to Android, so I'm struggling slightly. If anyone has experience of this device, I'd be grateful.

These are my problems:

  1. I haven't been able to root my device. adb can't see that it's connected.
  2. I managed to install the Google Play services app, but I get the message "Unfortunately Google Play Services had stopped" when I try and open the store.
  3. I'm having to use Logos app 4.5.3, because that's the latest one available by direct download rather than through Google Play.

I'm enjoying using what I have, but if someone can help me sort out these problems, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

There are a few websites that make downloading an APK for sideloading simple. Here is one that currently has the latest Logos Android app available:

    https://apkpure.com/store/apps/details?id=com.logos.androidlogos

(I see they also offer an APKPure app store app... might be useful if you are unable to get the Google Play app to work on the Boyue).

I don't own the Boyue yet... but this site deals with that issue: http://www.howtogeek.com/125769/how-to-install-and-use-abd-the-android-debug-bridge-utility/

For rooting your T62+, try following this guide: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245888  This is an automated process that will root your device and install Google Play Store. Rooting, in itself, isn't too hard. However, setting up Google Play Store to work manually involves installing at least three Google apk's and then changing permissions on each. This linked process is automated.  YMMV, of course, but I hope this will work for you.

If it does not work, there are other places you can go to get rooting help. I can point you to some, or upload to my Dropbox one of the rooting apk's that are out there. But this process seems to work well on most devices.

    Good luck!

Thanks Devin. That fixes Logos, which was the most important thing, and the info from your link is enough to get me a bit further. I'll let you know how I get on with that.

Thanks, Mark. That was the guide I was following, but it wasn't working. I realise now, from Fr. Devin's link, that was because I hadn't enabled developer mode, which wasn't mentioned in the guide!

I'm nearly there now, I think. I've rooted, and Google Play is installed. The only problem is that there's no Google Play icon on my Apps page. I only realised it was installed because APKPure told me I could open it. Any suggestions?

Yes, entering developer mode is essential - as well as enabling usb debugging. I didn't notice that it wasn't in that guide. Glad that you found help for that part.

As for getting the Play Store icon to appear, here are a couple of suggestions. One, a simple reboot. (You have probably done that already!) Sometimes, the icon "magically" appears after a reboot or two. If that doesn't seem to help, try installing another launcher, like Nova Launcher. You don't have to use that launcher afterwards. But sometimes that process makes the icon appear. I remember fiddling with it when I set up my device. That was a while back, and I'm trying to remember exactly what I did that made the icon appear for me. If it comes back to me, I'll edit this post, in case you or anyone else might need it.

Edit: check out the discussion on this page: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245888&page=3 It seems to address your issue! Good Luck, and God bless!

I now have Play Store, thanks!

Would you have any advice about running Logos from an internal or external SD card? I've seen numerous threads on here, but they seem to offer different solutions and I'm not sure which I should follow.

Your Boyue T62+ has over 6 gb of available internal storage (for your data/resources), and about 1 gb for user apps themselves. Unless you plan to use your Boyue's internal storage for a number of other things, you will likely not need to worry about using an external sd card. At least, I haven't seen the need to. I have about 300 resources on my T62+ (internal), as well as a number of other apps (and all my eBooks), and still have LOTS of internal space.

But that's your call! If you want to have your Logos resources on your external sd card, here's one way that I used on another E-Ink eReader I once had that had a lot less internal storage. If you are successfully rooted, you can install and use the FolderMount apk. You can get it from Play Store. Here is the forum maintained by the creator of the app: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192122 There you'll find FAQs and help if needed.

What this allows you to do is to create a link between internal and external storage. The app then moves the actual files to external storage, while leaving the link in internal so that Logos will still think the resources are where it left them! It works well, and isn't too hard to set up.

Again, only you can decide if it's worth it or not.

There is also a way to move apps themselves to external, by using another app called Link2SD. Setting this up is more involved, as you have to create a partition on your external microSD card where your apps will go. But, with a gig of internal storage for user installed apps, I doubt that you'll need this.

As an aside, for reading other eBooks, the default reading apps are fine, but I recommend trying Moon Reader Pro. Use the Outdoor theme.  Works great.

Thanks, Mark. My 1Gb was showing as 80% full. Logos alone seems to be using about 165Mb of the 1Gb (plus 493Mb of the 6Gb internal "SD card"). Then my Kindle App was using another 170Mb (plus 27Mb on internal), which is a third of my 1Gb just on those two apps. Coming from an iPhone all these different storage areas are very confusing! But I've managed to move 100Mb of Kindle info onto the internal "SD card", and deleted a few apps, so I'm back to 50% full now.

Yes, as you have found, under Settings you can move at least some portion of your apps to internal storage. That helps a lot. If you want to use your external sd card for data or apps, then you'll need to try something like FolderMount or Link2SD. There are other apps out there that do similar things, but I've tried these and they work.  Someone else can speak to some other solution that they have tried!

Of the two, FolderMount works best. Link2SD works fine, but some apps don't like being moved to the external sd card, like Play Store or anything that requires root. It's less hassle if you can stay within that 1 gb of user app space. FolderMount is easy to learn and can move all your Logos resources to your external sd card (or any other data you want moved).

Yes, I agree that this partitioning is very confusing, especially for an Android neophyte. If you look in your file manager, what is listed as "sdcard" is really internal storage. "extsd" is your external sd card. You have to look elsewhere (as you have found) to get a readout of your usage of your 1 gb of app space. It would be much simpler if all internal storage was simply one partition.  Then you could install apps and save data until the whole thing filled up!

When i want to read a Logos resource or do a passage guide (or anything similar), I use my Boyue T62+ almost all the time. Occasionally, I use this iThing from that "fruity" company, which also works well, even if it isn't E-Ink. But for long-term reading, E-Ink is better.

    Hey all,

Just got my new Boyue T62+ yesterday and managed to get the Amazon app installed, Logos and Kindle installed through that and am loving it so far.  I'm such a newbie when it comes to Android though, and don't really know where to begin with other things.  I have a ton of questions, and any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1. What are the benefits of rooting? Should I do it?

    2. I am wondering if there is a way to get my kindle books to show up on the home screen under "Recently Added" or "Recently Read".  There is a ton of blank space there and it would be sweet to be able to just quickly go to the last book I was reading.

    3. Is there a way to change the "screensaver" to, say, the cover of the last book I was reading? I'd rather something like that showing up on my screen rather than the Chinese art that is on there. If so, how would I set that up?

    4. Is the home screen pretty much locked into place or is there a way to put more apps on the home screen (if I can't get the recent books to work).

    5. My buttons don't seem to be working in my Kindle app (for page turning). Any suggestions on that?

    6. Is there any way to do a system-wide "night mode"?  I would be absolutely thrilled to be able to have inverted colors system-wide.

    7. If I "hide" my menu at the bottom, how do I get it back?  I really don't know how to navigate this OS at all.

I hope I don't have too many questions for someone to tackle a couple.  I really appreciate the help around here!  Grace and peace!

    Aaron.

If all you're going to do is use the Logos and Kindle apps, there's no need to root. Rooting would allow you to install the Google Play appstore.

    Unfortunately not.

The Kindle app doesn't support them, unfortunately.

I leave the other questions for someone with more experience, but I don't think it's possible to do any of the other things you mention without a custom firmware update, which doesn't exist yet.

    Another quick question (I hope):

How do I move all of my Logos and Kindle books to the other partitian?  I'm running out of space on my 1GB, but nothing is on the other one. Is there a simple process for this that I just don't see?

    Thanks!

You'll have to Root and then use FolderMount or Link2SD to move the Logos app and its data to your secondary partition, as the default app doesn't yet support storing books on secondary partitions.

Oh man, this is not going well.  I went to the link to root my Boyue, but it's just not working.

I went through the order for the adb thing and it doesn't show my device on the list.

I'm using a Mac, though. And running Windows in Parallels.  Is that a problem? Is there a way to root the Boyue from Mac, or am I out of luck?

Again, any simple explanations would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks for all the help so far!

EDIT:  Figured it out with another thread from that link.

Now I am wondering how to move my kindle books and logos resources to the internal storage, as I am almost out of space on my 1GB partition.  Any step-by-steps to make this happen?

And how do I delete the two default Chinese apps on there?

I wouldn't worry about it for the time being.

Android storage is confusing. The Boyue has three partitions (internal storage, nand flash and SD card). You'll probably find that the nand flash will be slowing filling up, even if the SD card is unused, so unless you actually run out of internal storage, you needn't worry.

I have an European version of Boyue T62+ called Energy Sistem, assembled and customized in Spain. I like it very much but the only thing I would really appreciate to figure out would be the use of hardware buttons. I found myself to tend to use more the native reader then Logos and Kindle just because of the very poor sliding experience. Is there any way Logos would use those some day?

There's a post somewhere from a FL employee (Kevin, perhaps) to say that they've purchased an e-Ink device and will look into what additional support might be useful. No promises yet, though.

...sounds quite optimistic to me. [Y] It would be great. Thanks for that information.

Reading books on the e-ink reader is so nice and easy on my eyes. And to install Logos and Vyrso on that Spanish version of Boyue T62+ (Energy Sistem) was without any problems, directly via GooglePlay. No need to do any tricks.

After a few days with this device, I must say, I am quite disappointed.

This Boyue is painfully slow.  Not just "laggy" slow, but "boot-up-Logos-brew-a-pot-of-coffee-drink-cup-or-two-then-come-back-to-see-if-it-has-loaded" slow.  Am I doing something wrong here?  I constantly get messages about the application hanging and asking if I should wait or quit the app.  Not sure if I've done something wrong here in the setup.

Any suggestions as far as the speed goes?  I really liked the idea of this thing at first, but maybe my expectations were a bit too high.  It is just painfully slow.

Maybe I just don't know how to use an Android, but when I hit the Logos app on my iPad, it's so snappy. Same with the Kindle app.

On the Boyue, everything is painfully slow. EVERYTHING.  Maybe a clean device would be in order and I should just start over?  I really haven't done much except install Google services/Play (which I regret, but it was suggested somewhere to install them.)

Sorry for the negativity, but I am a bit frustrated with this thing.

my boyue t62d takes 42 seconds to boot.  the Bible app (only app installed other than google play) takes 33 seconds to start and open up to the document i was reading.  quite happy with the performance.

i haven't found the right touch for scrolling though.  wish it were better.

I'd remove Google Services/Play. It will kill the battery, and slow down the device.

The Boyue is not fast by any means, but you should find performance acceptable most of the time. This is what I do to try and maintain decent performance:

    1. Don't install background services you don't need.
    2. Don't use multiple apps — just Logos and Kindle.
    3. Don't shut down the Boyue when not in use. Instead, turn WiFi off to preserve the battery.
    4. In Logos, if you can, use the History list to switch resources, not the Library (press and hold back to get this list). I find the library is the slowest part of the app.

Thanks for the feedback.  I have done just that.  I reformatted and only installed Kindle and Logos and it working a bit faster.

One MAJOR issue I'm having, though, is that I cannot figure out how to change pages!  In the IOS version, on my iPad, it's a simple flick left or right, but what gives with the Android version?  It is unbelievably inconsistent.  Sometimes it flips forward, sometimes backwards, sometimes nothing for a few seconds.  It's driving me nuts!  Am I missing something with this version or is this just the way it is?

Sometimes it flips forward, sometimes backwards, sometimes nothing for a few seconds.

It's "tap on the right margin", or "swipe left". Personally I find tapping easier, but you have to do it right at the edge. Usually the page turn will be pretty instant, occasionally you have to wait a few seconds.

That is exactly my frustration also (turning the pages). That is why it would be so nice if the hardware buttons would work.

So which e-ink device would you purchase for logos and kindle today if you were buying?  I love the idea of using the app and my highlights transferring over etc.  If you were to start today what would you go with?  I really only need logos and kindle or at least I think that is true. :)
