Need advice on a hard drive space issue (must have at least 1GB free to index)

I have about 10-12 GB of free space on my SSD. However every time there is a program update, I get the "stopped indexing your library because there is insufficient disk space" and the "must have at least 1GB free of free space"

So I'm assuming that since my library is so big, (91.4GB) that the index file must be larger than average and once it finishes it goes back to saying I've got over 10GB free space (which I assume that means it must delete the old one)

But I have bare minimum files on my computer, so every update cycle I have to move a folder that I have which is about 80GB off, and then replace it after the index. It's getting frustrating, but I can't swing another hard drive right now.

Any ideas?

Just to mention what particular advice I have in mind...

Are there any files you could remind me of which are large and could be removed (even if I have to put them back) ?

Is there anyway do delete the old index file first before the new one finishes (If that even works that way)?

Dave will likely give you a better number, but I am a "free space" nut. If your drive is too small, either offload other files or get a new drive.

That's precisely my question, how can I see where there may be some big files hiding that I could remove/replace.

I have basically no music/pictures/videos. My calibre library is large and logos is large. Other than that I can't see anything taking up the other 50plus GB

I may be confused.... You originally say that you have 10-12 GB free but the screenshot provided only shows that you have 1 GB free. Are we talking about 2 separate drives?

Hey Steve, no its the same drive, that's my problem, I do have that much free space, except for when Logos does a big Index (usually with a beta update or if I get several new resources updated etc).

So apparently, the space it requires to index in my case is more like 10-12GB not 1GB.

I think I may have freed up enough space from Mark Barnes' idea.

-Delete the entire webcache folder.

That was 3GB hopefully that will be enough cushion that I won't have to keep moving stuff around

Here's the problem illustrated. I must be right at the border of 10 GB free. but look at the duplicate index files here totaling almost 28 GB. So I think when It tries to create the new index file it just barely fails.

The other strange thing is that after deleting the 3GB webcache file, It appears my free space is still only 90mb .Now I'm thoroughly confused.

You can try repairing and optimizing your drive, and then run Windows Disk Cleanup.

Stay away from any 3rd party tools that claim to free up more space. They usually do more harm than good.

Just a note that might help.

Whenever a windows drive gets more than 75% or so full, windows slows down immensely.

I would suggest an external hard drive with USB connection to offload some files. Your computer will run much better.

I don't know what index.idx.bak is; I'm pretty sure Logos 6 doesn't create that file and you can safely delete it.

The Logos Indexer will take your 10GB "index" index, and your <1MB "supplemental" index and merge it into a new 10GB "index-build" index (for a total space requirement while it's working of 20GB). When the indexing is finished, it will replace "index" with "index-build" and free up that 10GB of working space. (This is done so that you can continue to search the old index while the new one is building.)

A workaround would be to enter the command "rebuild library index" into the command box at the top of the program. This will delete the existing index (freeing up 10GB) and then build it from scratch. You will not be able to search while this is taking place, but you should have enough free disk space for indexing to complete. (You may want to run this command at the end of the day and leave your computer running.)

Yeah after some spring cleaning of some massive PDFs I just found in calibre, I got the index to go, and then after it deleted its backup file, I have 25 GB free, so I'm 85 percent full. And I think I will continue to examine calibre for large scanned PDFs to see if I can bring it back down more

Your computer should have a SD reader, most do. Have thought about installing calibre to an external SD card.

I use a USB 3.0 adaptor from rocketek that holds one micro & one SDXC type this give me 128GB space, the access speed is about 75MB/s.

I don't use calibre, but i keep other data files on the two 64gb SDXC that i have.

This keeps my 256GB SSD running with about 45 ~ 50 % free space.

Thanks for the suggestion Lee, I actually don't use Calibre on my External Hardrive because the performance is seriously slower compared to the SSD with a read speed of like 715mbps, so It would be 10x slower to use the SD Card.

The best app for seeing what is using space on your SSD/HDD is http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/index.html

It gives a graphical representation of your drive, and you can very easy drill down in any folder to get more information.

Any ideas?

Use CCleaner free. It can get rid of many GB's of accumulated junk (temporary files, recycle bin, etc + unnecessary Restore Points in Tools)

Thanks for chiming in Dave. I've been using CCleaner for years and promote it often, unfortunately, that tip has already been used. But my index did eventually go through and now i've got about 27GB of free space.
