Which G.K. Beale Logos books are essential in your opinion?

G.K. Beale book

Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament

seems to be heavily pushed and hyped in Logos...would you agree it is essential? How does it measure up to the other G.K. Beale Logos books? Is it worth buying outside Logos instead?

I keep thinking about buying this commentary and then get confused by other similar titles he has written and abandon the whole idea....any feedback please?

Bestcommentaries.com list this commentary that Beale edited with Carson as the best book in the category of NT hermeneutics. They also list his NIGTC commentary on Revelation as the best on this NT book. That's why own both and have spent time in both.

I use this commentary often and have found it to be valuable. I currently preaching through 1 Peter on Sunday mornings and have made good use of this.

Wow, when I hear "Mr. Zootman" I think of my dad, but he has been with the Lord for over 37 years! I love preaching, and I have two goals, to be as accurate as I possibly can and to be as clear as I possibly can be. I gave up on trying to impress a long time ago, but I want people to clearly understand the word of God.

I have found it incredibly useful, especially if you're studying in the New Testament. It's written from that perspective, so it's less convenient to use if you're studying in the Old Testament and want to survey the New Testament uses of a particular passage. That's still doable, but you have to work backwards through an index. Still - that's only a quibble. It's one of the first things I check whenever I'm looking at a New Testament passage that uses the Old Testament, or an OT passage that's used in the NT.

absolutely very good in addressing interpretive issues important in NT study. Love the intertestamental treatment as well. I used it a lot during sermon series from Hebrews and John.

I use his Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old every time I exegete a NT passage. Whilst I don't think you can say that anything beyond a Bible is "essential" I would say that this commentary, along with a decent Bible Dictionary (ISBE or Anchor) and BDAG/HALOT are the books I would never want to be without. If I had them as paper editions, they're probably the books I would rush back in for if my house caught fire. Fortunately I have them in Logos, so even if my house burnt down I'd still have the books. [:)]

The key value of this commentary is that there is not much else available that does the same. A solid NT commentary will reference OT passages that are cited or alluded to but does not have enough room to devote to discussing the latter. So, the Beale-Carson volume does what most others cannot do (although Beale is also pretty expansive on OT/Rabbinical stuff in his volume on Revelation).

It has some good points here and there but I just can't get behind his idealistic approach to Revelation. I know it is rated as #1 in the commentary world but for a premillenialist futurist it just doesn't sit right with me but that is a different discussion for a different forum.

I could convert you to preterism if you want. Chilton, Ogden and Wallace <~~~These three authors along with some material from Demar and others got me to do away with Futurism and other views. Beale is a good read and I use it for research purposes only. His intro and background information are second to none. I'd love to add Mounce from the NICNT series. Someone told me he's ammillennial.

I disagreed with almost all of his conclusions for the same reason, but found his textual analysis and incorporation of background material unmatched. To me, using a commentary where I expect to throw out most of the final piece says a lot.

Dr. Beale was my academic advisor when I studied at Westminster... so I'm biased. My recommendations:

Listen to his inaugural lecture at Westminster - The Cognitive Peripheral Vision of Biblical Writers - It helpfully exposes some of his presuppositions as he connects OT and NT.
Like everyone else seems to be saying, the Commentary on NT Use of the OT is really helpful. I also utilize it when studying the OT as well since it helps me think about how a passage is used by later writers. The handbook is useful for the same reason.

His NT Biblical Theology is dauntingly large, but helpful
Erosion of Inerrancy
We Become What We Worship: A Biblical Theology of Idolatry

I have the NIGTC set but haven't studied Revelation since acquiring it so I can't comment on it.

I believe the NICNT Mounce Revelation leans towards a historic premillenial side but I could be wrong. I appreciate the conversion attempt Mr DAL but I'm of the Walvoord, MacArthur, Thomas, Morris type but I may check those out to see their sides as well.
