Availability and usability/functionality of resources on an Apple Ipad Air

Hi! I have a Logos Platinum package and various additional resources I've purchased that add up to 4513 resources altogether and need advice on purchasing a tablet that I can use to do basic bible searches and read my resources offline.

I tried using Logos 6 on a Lenovo Yoga tablet running a full version of Windows 10; but I couldn't really do so successfully, because the tablet had only 32GB of storage and indexing my resources would always fail. Though I could work around this by indexing things on my desktop PC and copying files to my tablet, this was a hassle; so I just gave up. Recently, my Yoga died; so I'm looking for something different.

I understand that the Apple and Android apps aren't as robust as the Windows desktop version of Logos, which is fine. However, I do want to be able to download all my resources to whichever device I purchase and read and search them there. That, for example, the Apple app won't do full library searches without an Internet connection is fine.

Apple iPads look more appealing to me than Android devices. Apple's continuing to update my iPod Touch after several years versus the lack of Android updates by most manufacturers gives me some assurance that an iPad Air won't become extinct very soon.

Would an iPad Air with 64GB of storage give me enough storage to download all my Logos resources and do the basic searching and reading that I want to do? I need to factor in that I'll need a couple of gigabytes for installing Kindle and Nook apps and the books I've purchased from Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

The Logos 7 FAQ - https://www.logos.com/FAQ - shows that the storage requirements for Platinum are 11.41GB so a 64BG IPad Air would certainly be large enough for that and, I would expect, be sufficient for your entire library.

Please note that if - for some reason - you need to reinstall the app you would need to download all the resources again.

For this, and other reasons, it is not recommended to download more resources than you really need offline although there are a number of users who do what you are suggesting and it seems to work well for them

I would add that a wait till after (I think 11th September) when there is an 'Apple Event' might pay dividends.

1. You may find that a new model provides extra functionality that would be of advantage.

2. You may find that existing models (both new and second hand) drop in price as those upgrading off load old kit.

I have embraced the Cloud model so only download minimal resources onto my iPad. I know there is much in my library that is incidental and only of passing interest so I certainly don't want that being transferred should I need to re-install. (Actually I have never had to reinstall only install on new kit).

The same goes for my Kindle App - I tend only to keep the books I am reading or intend to read in the very near future.

This gives me plenty of scope for using the iPad between internet connections - but then I am rarely too far from an internet connection.

Don - the other thing you need to remember is that a lot of the functionality with the iPad (and Android) app relies on being connected to the Internet, so things like searching, generating Passage Guides, etc won't work unless you are online. For basic reading, etc it's fine, but most of the other functionality is delivered via Faithlife's servers.

Most of your resources are available, but there are some books that publishers won't license to Logos for mobile devices.

I can't stress enough: This is not recommended. You will have heartbreak and pain if you do. The only situation I soften my advice on is if you are living in the jungle without internet. And maybe not even then.

Thanks! This helps a lot. I know that the desktop Windows version of Logos uses a lot of space for indexing, which I assumed the Apple and Android apps don't do (hence the limitations on searching). The limited search capability will be all I need on a tablet. Thanks, again!

Oh, a couple of other comments:

Waiting until September may be a good idea. After I posted my original message last night I searched on when Apple might have an iPad Air 3. There are conflicting stories that either it will be delayed until next year or that a lower-priced, less-featured iPad Pro (still generally better than today's iPad Air 2) will be released instead of an iPad 3. In either case, at least Best Buy is currently offering their 64GB black iPad Air 2 for $399, $100 less than the regular $499. One article I read indicated that whatever the new replacement might be will be priced at $599 for only 32 GB. Hopefully, if I decide to wait for Apple's September announcements, the iPad Air 2 64 GB will still be $399 if I decide to go that route.
In response to alabama24, I may fall into the situation you are describing. My wife and I have already been to Cambodia on a medical mission and were out in the jungle. We hope to return there or go elsewhere "into the jungle." I appreciate the concern, though; but as long as I can download some resources and read them and do a basic word search in a Bible, it will meet my needs until I get back to Internet-enabled areas. For the most part, I just want to read various resources and other books.

One of the reasons that the iPad became so popular was that if was a few grams lighter than the MacBook.

It may not seem a lot (actually it isn't a lot) but if you are carrying it about with you every day it makes a disproportionate difference to the decision to take it along.

If you do go the iPad route then you can max its usefulness - use it as an alarm clock, a calendar, a timers, a journal, and don't forget a camera. All things that you won't have to carry as well.

Tempted to say 'I prefer a paper...'? Then catch yourself on.

Yea, sometimes I wish I still had my real books; but I've gotten rid of most everything and am mostly electronic. Including my Logos resources, that's somewhere around 6,000 books--hard to carry around and move if paperback/hardback. [:)]

Since my Yoga died, I've been reading books on my iPod Touch. It works but is too small to continue doing the rest of my life. I like the iPod features though, like you mention for iPads, and am leaning toward an iPad. I just have to decide whether to get an iPad Air 2 ($399 for 64GB) or and iPad Pro ($699 for 128GB). Looking at both of them at a store today, it's hard not to want the speed of the iPad Pro. I'm in no hurry, so I can wait to see what Apple has to say in their upcoming product announcements apparently in September. If they had a Pro with 64GB, my decision would be easy given it's speed, flash for pictures, better speakers, better graphics system, etc.
