Advanced Search Training videos are on the way...

Just wanted to give you forum users a heads-up! Today I signed off on the Advanced Search Training videos. So, I imagine they will be ready for download in a couple of weeks.

They have been filmed for Logos & Verbum 7.1, and include the new search operator, INTERSECTS (which will be introduced in 7.1), as well as some other new search features introduced in v7.

These videos are designed to take you from an average search user to a real power user and search master. They attempt to systematically present everything you need to know about searching, in 3 hours. Every video is set in the context of real-life scenarios to illustrate when you would want to use the commands being taught.

Am I correct in thinking they are targeted for Verbum users and I would not get as much out of them since I do not practice Catholicism? I know Fr. The scenarios are geared to all who use Logos and Verbum.

Fr Andrew and I are both Catholic priests, so there may be at times a certain Catholic "flavor" to the videos, but as best I can tell everything in the videos should be both interesting and agreeable for Protestants and Orthodox as well (and others who don't mind training videos based on a Christian worldview). This was actually one of the explicit goals we set for ourselves when designing the videos, with the hope that they could serve a broad audience.

If anything, there is a certain leit motif throughout of scenarios used in the training videos that touch upon different ways in which the Gospels, especially the Synoptic Gospels, implicitly but suggestively present Jesus as divine.

MJ, as I understand it, Verbum is really just a Catholic flavored Logo's platform. Within the framework of that understanding, would there be any differences in functionality between verbum and logos? I mean, is there going to be any elements related to search for functionality and criteria in verbum that I would not experience in logos? I'm sure these videos are well worth the 50 bucks, end it appears that Devon and Andrew have something to be very proud of here ! Even if there were differences they would still be well worth it. I guess I'm just curious, more than anything, as to whether or not there are any differences worth speaking of between the two versions.

The passage guide in Verbum also searches Liturgy (is this in Logos), Catholic Topical Index, Collections: Catechism, Church Documents, Church Fathers.

Other guides have a similar Catholic "flavour".

From memory, they also omit maybe one or two sections found in the standard Logos guides.

None of these factors should be in the above videos given the contents presented above. Probably Devin can answer that one.

I can confirm that what MJ says is right on - for the purpose of these search training videos, either Logos or Verbum should work equally well. In fact... Fr Andrew recorded his videos in Logos! Oops! [:$][:)]

Up until now, Faithlife hasn't used the Mobile Ed style for software training videos. If they were to want to do so, I would be glad to provide the scripts and recommended readings and/or activities.

Regardless, we tried to include some activities in the videos like what you describe. At the end of close to half of the videos we present a "challenge", which consists in an advanced search the viewer is invited to solve on their own, that they should be able to do using the skills taught in that video (or in that section of the video series).

And, for those who would like readings, the way to do it would be accompanying each video with its respective section in the Search Help and Detailed Search Help on the wiki, and/or in the Advanced Searching section in the Logos or Verbum Help manual (just the Advanced Searching section of the manual is 30 pages long printed out!).

Most people would never read through all that otherwise, but by taking just the part that corresponds to each video, it should be quite simple, and by the end you'll have gone through pretty much everything, and the readings would complement the videos nicely.

I will use the wiki and Logos Help to accompany your videos and try the challenges presented in the training.

It's interesting that Mobile Ed has an LT category but doesn't encourage trainers to provide the additional material that a course could bundle with the video training.

In general, there seems to be this huge gap between power users such as yourself and novices like me who are aware that the software can do far more, but haven't progressed beyond basic searching. I think both the search syntax and the search terminology can be intimidating, and there is a definite need for resources that can help us progress beyond the basics.

Thank you and Fr. Andrew for preparing these training videos. I look forward to learning and being blessed by what the software can truly help us accomplish as we spend time studying the Holy Bible. God bless you both!

I only have some basic datasets from Logos 6, so will I find that I am unable to do many of the searches demonstrated in the videos?

The basic search functionality is present in all v6 base packages, but there are a lot of more advanced searches that require reverse-interlinear Bibles or some more advanced datasets.

Supposing you have some reverse-interlinear Bibles, I'm guessing you should be able to follow along with around two-thirds of the demonstrated searches? If you don't have any reverse-interlinear Bibles, it would be considerably less, maybe half.

I would go along with this suggestion as well. My only complaint is the sound volume. I have my laptop speakers turned completely up and while it is above a whisper, I would not say that it is at a normal conversational level. I can live with it as it is, but it would be nicer to have more volume.

I too, quite honestly, must say that I was disappointed that there's no notes or written text on this product. I do concede that written transcript may be overkill and not necessary, but, at the very least, some charts or guides, or written summaries of each video would have been really nice !

As such, I surely hope that someone will take another look at this product and consider adding a written component to these videos. It would be very nice and very much appreciated.

That's too bad. I have found with other recordings that my laptop speakers were not very loud but they seem to be fine in this case. It may seem overly obvious but can I assume you have checked your volume settings...just to make sure that is not the issue?

Hi Bruce. Yes, that was my first thought too. Speakers were maxed out and I even checked to see if I hadn't somehow set a limit on the speakers. It is always possible that the speakers could be starting to get weak, but I just tried listening with earbuds and there just wasn't much difference. I will see if the sound level is any better on the iPad after lunch.

I was curious to see if anyone else was having the problem and so far it seems that no one else is.

Good to hear that, Bill. Maybe headphones or small external speakers could fix that.

FWIW, we matched the volume of these videos to the volume level of other Mobile Ed courses (which is, BTW, slightly lower than a typical YouTube video volume level, but not by much).

Regarding the script, I've been in dialogue with Faithlife about this, but for the moment anyway the answer is here: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/130477/854393.aspx#854393. So far, Faithlife has decided to not include scripts for training videos. Hopefully we can work something out, but for the moment it's not clear that's going to happen.

I'll drop them a line about the Faithlife TV. That one should be easy to solve. [:)]

Bill, which OS are you using? I had this same problem on my iMac after upgrading to Sierra (Mac OS 10.12), not just with Advanced Training, but with every video. Tried zapping PRAM, which did not cure the problem. However, when I reset SMC, normal volume returned https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
