Linux Logos 7

Now Logos 7 is out, and I've purchased it, I am wanting to move to Linux. Imagine my surprise that my favourite Bible Study Software is not available! When are we going to get a Linux version of Logos? I note that this has been asked previously and I am not the first.

It's highly unlikely that Logos will create a Linux version since the market for such a version would not justify the cost to develop it. At least that's what I remember being said in the past on these forums. (Maybe you've seen that already.)

From what I have gathered, Faithlife sees it's Web APP as a solution for those who want to use Logos in a native environment. This is less than ideal but also as stated it has been seen as cost prohibitive to even consider development of a Linux version. Going to user voice

We will not be developing a desktop/offline application for Linux.
https://app.logos.com continues to improve and will be our solution for any platform that supports a web browser.

This is very current info and shows a rather small interest in a Linux product. 388 votes could be as few as 130 people being as each idea can receive 3 votes from one person. Also I do remember hearing that there was enough unique code using non common tools to make it unlikely to ever run on Linux via WINE. I hope one day someone does get it to run under WINE but at this point as unlikely as it is this seems the best bet to one day have an offline FL APP running on LINUX.

Logos Now membership includes Logos Web App, which can be used on open source distributions, including Linux (with GPL licensing).

I hope one day someone does get it to run under WINE ...

Idea for Faithlife to guage offline $$$ interest by user community is creating "community pricing" item that allows Logos and Verbum users to bid on graphical port of OS X (mac OS) applications to run on open source.

Well no major Bible software I am aware of runs on Linux OFFICALLY.... that said I believe Wordsearch runs properly under WINE (the mac version is basically a wine emulated version).... and I know on Accordance users have gotten the current version working under WINE.

This is another shift to subscription based services. Revenue $. This model angers me as a consumer. Microsoft did the same thing using the same lines of software being out of date. That being said from what I read of the web service the product does not make much sense for the Logos 7 customer. A new user still needs the desktop app for offline use and you need to own libraries to make the software useful... So if I was a desktop user why would I want this.

I take this as a revenue gimmick that is really only relevant to current users or to expose new users to their store. Maybe I am wrong, this is what I get from the FAQ on the product.

I'd would be in for a Linux package for logos as well.

Faithlife and Logos could be innovative and branch out.

There is https://biblia.com but this has been a let down the few times I've used it.

A new user still needs the desktop app for offline use and you need to own libraries to make the software useful.

While still in Beta, the Logos Web App and Verbum Web App have substantially more functionality than Biblia, but does need Logos Now or Verbum Now membership or cloud subscription.

Substantial Logos Web App , Verbum Web App and Biblia usage on open source distributions could help business justification for offline development and support. Edit: dreaming of community pricing item to gauge user willingness to fund offline development, which currently has projected expenses exceeding revenue so unwise for Faithlife to pursue.

I wish FL would rephrase their policy to say that there is not plan to develop a desktop/offline application for Linux. Because really, you never know what will happen in the market. It seems Linux is beginning to become an viable alternative to Microsoft and Apple. Like a stealth...all might be surprised what may happen in the future. Linux is fast, and reliable. Reminds me of the days when FL was only on MIcrosoft and not on Apple.

I know that the Windows version uses the .net framework What does the mac version use? Perhaps it would be easier to get the Mac version to run on linux/bsd as the underpinnings of Mac started life as BSD.

.NET Framework is used by Windows and Mac applications with substantial shared code. For graphical interaction, Windows application uses Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) while Mac uses Cocoa.

Perhaps it would be easier to get the Mac version to run on linux/bsd as the underpinnings of Mac started life as BSD.
