Mac vesion Update Catalogs for hours on end - nothing to do, logs show idle

I notice every now and then the Mac Verbum will show the yellow bar "Updating Library Catalog" for hours on end, yet by count of resources there are no resources that have come down, the system was previously stable, and the logs (attached) show nothing going on. Is there something corrupted again?

Also, I can close Verbum, restart it, the blue circle briefly says "Preparing Library", then the circle goes away, but bring up the Library and you get the yellow message - nothing is going on, and the message does not disappear.

Try renaming the folder /Users/donawalt/Library/Application Support/Verbum/Data/qo8npq2w.n3b/LibraryCatalog/ and restart Verbum
I don't agree with this as a troubleshooting step.
This will force the entire Library Catalog to be rebuilt from the Resource Manager, then updated with online metadata updates (which will take a long time) and there's no real reason to believe it will fix the original reported problem. (It may make things worse.)
The logs you posted didn't show continual updates; it's possible this is just a UI bug that's displaying an incorrect notification. We may need a Mac expert to dig in further.

It eventually stopped. That collection is from the Theology and Denominations group on Faithlife, it has over 1200 members so I assume they have this Collection too. More and more it seems that with the sizes of our libraries, our collections, our visual filters, Logos/Verbum is running out of gas. It might be an area that needs some serious attention. This is running on one of the brand new Macbook Pros with the enhanced processor and graphics card. If things are slow there, the Logos user audience might be in for some serious trouble over the next couple of years.
If we are starting to need to delete things that are not critical, why are we adding more and more features? The focus needs to be different IMHO.
Thanks for your help narrowing the problem down!

A conflation of two very different issues ... new features are unrelated to the need to delete user built parameters that are outside the range of what a feature was built to maximize performance on. What is appropriate is to request one or more of the following:
- that the feature be recalibrated to work well on actual "extreme" cases
- that the feature be redesigned to allow temporary suspension/archiving of elements not currently requested

Sorry MJ, disagree - what is an "Extreme" case? When more and more people have more than 15,000 resources, and Logos sells new packages and bundles all the time to that audience...I have 40 Visual Filters, gathered in study over 10+ years, is that extreme? And the adding of new features very much compromises the performance and quality of the existing software.
The one example of a Collection, which likely 1200 people are using, adds 5 seconds of processing time. If that was the only issue I would have never said anything, 5 seconds (or in that neighborhood) of "Updating Library Catalog" would not have been noticed. It is the cumulative effect. Or are you suggesting that features being turned off, deleting all but a precious few of user created things is a reasonable approach? And, I have about 100 Collections maybe....even if ALL of them took 5 seconds, that's under 10 minutes - a SMALL PERCENTAGE of the time it was updating the catalog. There is some other problem buried in there, as Bradley pondered. So I go delete all my Collections and the same performance problem occurs? No thanks.
Which brings up the other question - this was on a weekend, a system that was COMPLETELY UPDATED. I started it. Why is it updating the catalog at all? Well you and I know there is a reason, but that's rather illogical. Imagine windows with a message up for an hour saying "Updating Windows" and well, as far as the user is concerned, it's not updating anything? Most likely, something is being updated/corrected/rewritten that is required because of some other problem that has not been fixed. Restoring integrity of the database, or something. But when a system gets band aid on band aid it starts running poorly. This software requires way more processing power to do simple things than it should, and I am not the only one who sees it. And yet - the subscription model drives us to more and more features - while the software we use starts to burst at the seams.
When the advice becomes more and more "Turn this off, turn that feature off, ..." the system is getting bloated. You probably could search the forums and find more problems/suggestions to turn off Visual Filters than things people are doing with them. They are a problem system-wide NOW.
I am not saying it is BAD now system-wide, I am saying the first signs are there of user impact, that will only get worse unless some re-engineering occurs - and that takes time. Start now, it won't become a disaster. Ignore the early warning signs, continue to add features on top of an old architecture, and this software will become unusable for many people other than for the simplest, stripped down examples.
What you suggest MJ is a band-aid. If Faithlife follows you advise, the day will quickly come when even that doesn't work as more and more bloat is added.

I've noticed in other problem cases that Collections with rules like this have come from a Faithlife group, and it appears that they have been acquired without asking/knowing that they (all) satisfy a need, and certainly without suspecting that in combination they can cause problems. So I ask the question "Does a very long list of authors constitute a meaningful resource collection for you?". A shorter rule involving Type and Subject would be more beneficial than having a list of authors whose resources you may/may not own! Or take the time to manually tag resources e.g. mytag:creation OR subject:creation creates a collection of 27 resources with 20 different authors, and I had to tag only 8 resources.

I suspect you did not understand my proposal. Even like Word gets clogged in documents > 100 pages which is resolved by the users choice of view, division into segments, or deliberate acceptance of the performance until screens start coming up blank. That is the problem I face converting my creeds document of L3 in L4-6 because of the change in the naming convention for PB's. By the same token, the user can ask more of Logos than their equipment can support. I suggested two concrete ways to handle the overload programmatically rather than requiring the user to act.

Dave, I do get value out of these collections - I respect how they were created and the thought/discussion into the categorization, and it gives me (for me) a credible opinion as to the denomination of a resource.

No I understood perfectly. Users stop using features because the system is getting bloated with even more features we don't use. You can choose to believe we are not supposed to make use of all these features if you want.

The only reason why these collection rules exist, is because FL doesn't tag the resources themselves. It would surely be more efficient if we didn't have to either use rules, or resort to manual tagging (which we have to update ourselves whenever new resources are added).
BTW, I use that group's collection rules myself, and don't see any issue like this. When the library does update, the banner only appears for a few seconds.
Thanks to FL for including Carta and a Hebrew audio bible in Logos 9!

Oh my gosh MJ, if you are going to cloud your point with catachrestic witticisms, at least spell the word correctly.

Sure - do a search on the forums for Visual Filters, Layouts, Bible Browser, Search Panel, all have at least one time or another had recommendations to stop/minimize/change how it is used because of software problems. Also some of the interactives, and the courseware. There have also been threads recently on search becoming very slow on recent computers.
MJ, use Logos on a Mac, with a big library. Just because you don't see any problems doesn't mean they don't exist for others. Windows version runs much better than Mac on a large library/heavy use. The "I don't see it so it doesn't exist" isn't very MVP-like.

There are two reasons I don't use a Mac:
- When it was first released I intended to purchase one as soon as the promised compiler rather than interpreter came out ... shall we say it was a long wait ...
- My computer use does not play to the Mac's strengths but rather to the PC's strengths. If my interests were different I might well be on a Mac.
