better organizing of books

I bought this book which is a grammatical key to the New Testament (German book). It is basically a commentary with grammatical and other notes verse by verse, but it is categorized as a grammar. I would like to be able to have this book in the commentary section of my passage guide. It's more of a commentary than a grammar because of its organization.

I find no way to do this, and I think it should be possible.

My solution to this sort of problem is to tag the resource "commentary nonversified." I then customize my passage guide to include a section with a collection containing all the books in my library with that particular tag (currently 51). There are several resources I wish would show up in the passage guide by default, including:

-Difficulties of the Bible (Torrey)

-The Great Texts of the Bible (Hastings)

-Hard Sayings of the Bible (Kaiser, Davids, Bruce, and Brauch)

-When Critics Ask: A Popular Handbook of Bible Difficulties (Geisler and Howe).

-Etc., Etc.

Does grammatical key resource have a Bible index ?

Passage Guide allows section(s) to be added: e.g. Commentaries and Collections followed by changing Settings to desired collection (Settings appears when mouse hovers over section line in Passage Guide)

Seems you got Siebenthal's "sprachlicher Schlüssel". If so, I think the book type is wrong - after all, Zerwick's comparable book is type: bible commentary.

Logos needs to do that. Can you look up the Index in the information panel of the book?

Zerwick's book is indexed by bible (along with page and headwords, sorry I'm in the German UI) - is Siebenthal's, too? Otherwise they can't simply change the type but need to rebuild the book.

Update: I brought this up in the German language subforum and it turned out that yes, it's a bug. Siebenthal's key should not be of type 'grammar' (and it does have a bible index, no further need to look it up).

The German language team of Faithlife now is aware of this issue and will look into updating the resource as soon as possible - thanks, Ben Misja!

Larry, Logos will fix that book (hopefully very soon), no need to tag it from your side.

That said, there are commentaries in Logos not assigned to that type in the library - you can use the mytag: - the trick to have such works in your guides is to build a collection with the rule mytag:XXX (the XXX is what you gave as your tag) and then to have that collection show up in your guide.

Could you give some examples so that I can see why they are not labeled commentary or if they should be reported as metadata errors? It was mentioned recently that the rules for being a commentary had been loosened.

The problem however is that simply re-assigning the type will only work if the resource has been tagged with the bible index, which often is exactly the issue.

If you filter your library for tag:commentarynonversified you'll find lots of monographs (>200 in my library) - some of them are actually commentaries but - I assume - mostly lack the proper bible index. Of course, some may be categorized wrongly (after all, this is a community tag), but many are verse-by-verse or chapter-by-chapter commentaries. I think, even MP Seminaries once shared a list of those non-versified commentaries so people could include them as a collection in their Passage guides.

Some time ago a fellow user built a PB source "Index of Bible Studies" that could be compiled as a commentary and linked to all those other works (latest version I know of: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/65323/701440.aspx#701440 ) - using this resolves the issue - but one would constantly need to add new books (and Vyrso editions) to it to keep it reasonably complete and current.

One common example for this issue is the resource "collected writings of W.E. Vine" which contains a commentary on Isaiah and some seventeen on books of the NT" - I think I first heard complaints about that over five years ago... It is one resource, but the absolute major portion of it is commentary (and you know that many commentaries have large chunks of non-versified material for all those introductory remarks on author, date, audience... ).

Thanks Mick - many of these I think of as "Biblical monographs" for my purposes - they are exactly the reason that in the survey on the Passage Guide I asked for a Biblical monographs section that was tagged in much the same way as sermons i.e. not requiring that the units be sequential. I don't care how it is done - expanding commentaries or treating them separately - but this is a major limitation.

I tried prioritizing it as a grammar, but the grammar function seems all screwed up to me. It showed nothing relevant from this book and was too tedious to work with.

OK, looked at some videos about tagging. Still not sure all how that helps anything. I have created collections before. I was hoping to get this particular resource in my commentary section of my passage guide so I can be sure to look at it and not forget I have this book.

In your library the filter type:monograph AND subject:(Bible AND criticism) ANDNOT type:"Bible commentary" includes some false positives but works fairly well. Note many of these are not structured as commentaries but are studies of the Bible text.

We already know the info from the other thread in German language, so no need for further info from you - thanks nevertheless..

But you can always find this information by clicking the small (i) button in the top right corner that's visible when the resource is displayed - or, by turning on the "information display" in the library (again, button with (i) for information) and selecting the book.

It is not to be confused with the "information" tool that you can open in a separate tab and will show footnote references, lemmata etc.

In fact, the bible index is the technical functionality that makes it a verse-by-verse commentary: it allows you to enter a bible verse reference in a box and go to that position the book - or, when you have studied a verse in the bible or elsewhere and open the commentary, to open at exactly the right position, or, when you set i with the same link set (A, B, C...) as a bible, to scroll along automatically when you read.

Not to be confused with a list of bible verses touched upon in the book, which you may find called "bible index" in an appendix of some printed books.

Here is a screenshot of what the community has identified in my library that could be integrated into the Passage Guide but currently is not. It includes all 20 volumes of The Great Texts of the Bible, but I had to collapse that series in order to get everything to fit in one screenshot. I believe the list would be a hair longer if it included books I had flagged that the broader community has not.

Larry, I'm one of the German team members. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. The bug has been reported and is being worked on. I'm not with Content Production so I can't tell you how extensive the work is going to be, but I personally hope it will be fixed soon.
