annoying hidden verses behavior

I have an iPad 3 running iOS 9.3.5 with Logos 5.11.2 viewing the KJV Bible document in scroll mode.

Logos has exhibited an annoying "feature" for quite some time. The bible display sometimes flashes and resets the view while reading. The resulting view is near by, but some of the verses are cut and hidden. This usually affects 3-5 verses, and when I scroll back to the view near where I was reading there is a line of discontinuity where the missing verses should appear. I have been able to get the verses to reappear by rotating the display and holding in the new orientation for a few seconds till the view resets to the new orientation before rotating back (Obviously, I don't have rotation lock set). Sometimes I have to rotate quite a few times to get through a particular passage. The behavior is not consistent, and I cannot figure out what may be causing the problem. I have tried rebooting the iPad, resetting the Logos App, and it still keeps coming back. Since I don't read many other books on the iPad with Logos I cannot verify if this affects other documents.

This has been an annoying problem, but I have been able to devise workarounds. I decided to see if anyone has experience any similar feature.

Can anyone offer some advice for how to fix this Logos App "Feature" ??

Can you confirm that the problem is only with the KJV?

To test you might try running another translation in the second panel .

Hey George! Thanks for the report. I'm trying to re-create this so we can see the behavior, but there's a few specifics we need first.

Is your view set to scroll or page?
Does anything happen prior to the flashing? Any setting changed/manipulated, any notes created, etc?
Are there any notes associated with the passages in question that disappear, or is it completely random?
Do you have any other iOS devices to try this on? If so, does it occur there as well?
Does this only happen in the KJV/bible translations, or does this happens with commentaries?
Is the device online or offline during the occurrence?
Is the resource in question downloaded to the device?

Please let us know these specifics, and include any other information you might see as necessary, and we can try to create the problem with our testing devices as well.

Just to say I see this behaviour from time to time - but haven't been able to pin down specific circumstances.

It happens with multiple resources - it happened earlier today when reading through a Vyrso book - "The Mission of Preaching"

My view is set to scroll, the resource was not downloaded (which is an omission as I normally download books I am reading through) and my device was online.

No prior flashing other than the display changing to hide the verses.

No notes typically, but I do also find that sometimes scrolling the page ends up becoming a selection command and those lines get highlighted. I don't believe that his is connected to the hidden verses issue.

My wife has an iPad 4, and we have not seen it occur on that device. It is far less loaded app wise.

I have mostly use the iPad to read the bible, so I don't have any observations with other documents that I can remember.

Device is typically offline, although last night is occurred while being online.

The KJV document is fully downloaded.

Some additional info: red herring or red meat is for your discernment:

I use a reading plan that takes me through OT, NT, and Ps/Pr each day. Last year, but not this year, I noticed that when I arrived at the end of a book that the connecting link or finished button was missing. I then had to revert to the document containing the reading plan and specifically select the next passage in the list. This year the reading plan has generated continuation links at the end of each book.

When scrolling the scroll is locked when the material is not ready for display. Waiting a bit or repeated scrolling eventually loads the next batch of text. This appears to be normal, but I don't know what kind of caching is normal.

I use black background with white text.

I use the device for Chinese input, so I don't know if the different keyboards may have any effect.

That is about all that I can think of at this time.

Sorry I haven't been able to get the picture until now. I have a couple of pictures that display this problem. I am thinking that the problem may be due to a conflict introduced by the "365 Connect the Testaments Plan." I am not exactly sure if that is the plan, but each day involves a reading from the OT, NT and the poetry books. Today's I read Num, 1 Cor, and Ps. The pictures here are from another time reading the bible, but the behavior occurred a few times today. Today I noticed that the hidden verses typically hide the section where the connection to the following passage would be located. I am the only one that uses this reading plan, so that may also explain why my wife does not see it on hers.

I have not uploaded files before, so please let me know if you can see the PDF of the images captured from the app on my iPad.

If I turn off the scrolling, then it is very hard to see if verses are skipped. I personally prefer the scrolling view. However, I have made some observations that I believe may help to replicate the problem. Further, I was reminded by my wife that she has seen this hidden verses behavior on her iPad too.

Experiment:

Reading through the bible with the connect 360 day OT, NT, and poetry books selection each day. I read ahead, so that I am more than a month ahead of the daily plan. I mention this not because I think it is significant, but to give a full picture of the environment when this occurs. I notice that the hidden verses tend to hide the termination of each reading segment.

I noticed this occurs only when offline reading, so I did not rotate the screen to try to reset it. Instead I went online, and returned back to the passage with the hidden verses. Without doing anything but waiting for a little bit the screen cleared up and the missing verses reappeared. I then went back offline and read some more. It happened again. Again I went back online waited and the screen cleared. Since this is a very repeatable event I thought that you might be able to do the same. Let me reiterate the requirements:

1) Set up a 365-Day Connect the Testaments reading plan

2) read ahead 1 month

3) go offline

4) notice when the verses hide near the end of the daily reading segments.

5) go online

6) keep the device with the hidden verses in view and don't try to rotate or reset the display.

7) wait until the display corrects itself.

I don't know if this is a repeatable pattern on another iPad, but I thought I would try to lay out the details to help out as much as I can.

This issue might only happen when scrolling view is enabled, which is why I asked if the problem also occurs when scrolling view is turned off. There have been previous reports of display problems that only occur when scrolling view is enabled and I'm trying to nail this issue down so we can fix it.

It should be quite easy to see if any verses are skipped when scrolling view is turned off, but I might not understand your exact circumstances. Could you please try turning scrolling view off and let us know if the issue still occurs?

I have been using Logos without scrolling for the past week, and it is a bit challenging. However, I have some observations similar to the scrolling environment. At first I thought that the non-scrolling window worked perfectly, but I only was testing it reading forward. When I started to swipe back and forth I began to notice that the swipe backwards would routinely omit verses, whereas the forward scroll did not. I did the same test of on and off line usage. Again as in scrolling, when online the swiping works as expected, but when in offline mode the ability to replicate the same screen appearance after swiping back and forth is essentially impossible. The behavior is indeed repeatable, and appears in both scrolling and swiping mode.

Let me know if you would like for me to perform some specific tests on my end, but for now the issue is not resolved by disabling scrolling.

I'm able to reproduce the issue you are seeing in Paging view (non-Scrolling view) - this is a very good find.! I've written up a case for both iOS and Android since it occurs on both platforms.

Still, I believe that the scrolling vs. non-scrolling issues are two unrelated problems, although they both relate to how text is displayed. Since one of the issues occurs on both iOS and Android it's more of a resource navigation problem and not a display problem. The other issue only occurs on iOS devices when scrolling view is enabled and is strictly a display problem related to how the display information is cached.

Unfortunately I have still not been able to reproduce the scrolling view issue but we have seen it in the past. It's probably more likely to happen on slower devices; the dev team is aware of it.

It also happens to me occasionally on the Android version. I haven't been able to pin down a consistent set of circumstances, so I have assumed it was related to a big ol' thumb. Sometimes the jump is significant, so I must be inadvertently pressing a link.
