why does Logos use 100% of disk when doing various tasks?

I have noticed that when Logos is locked up (not responding) 100% of disk is being used. I went to task manager and looked at the performance issues and every time the graph shows 100% of usage. Is there a way to alter this so I get more speed. If that is the right desire. I have 466gb hard drive and 6gb ram memory.

You are using Windows, but it would also help to know the tasks that cause a lock up.

I have windows 10. The lock up occurs whenever I do a passage guide; often when I open a layout, those sort of tasks. I realize that in those tasks they have to load a lot of information. My son who has a BS in Computer science, a Masters in computer related Information technology thinks that it shouldn't be taking up the entire disk in order to run those tasks. He explained how the disk works and suggested the possibility of getting an SD drive, but to check with someone else from Logos about this.

Please dont go for an SD drive, in general Logos performs badly on them

This has a 5400 rpm disk - which is probably a significant factor in the poor performance you are seeing

I expect a SSD would make a big difference but probably depends how long you intend to keep the laptop

that is what my son thought. He said I could go to a 7500 rpm or to an SSD. It just depended on whether or not I was going to keep this very long.

For performance improvement, 7200 rpm is up to 33 % faster than 5400 rpm (so 3 minute task takes 2 minutes) while SATA III SSD with write speed over 500 MB/sec would complete storage task in less than a minute.

I've noticed more lock ups in Logos 7 than in Logos 6 on my 15 month old notebook, but never in Passage Guide and rarely with Layouts.

Whenever you run an intensive task in Logos, it will max out either processor cores or the hard drive. Logos is acting like a database server, and running a passage guide or switching a layout will cause Logos to look up information in dozens or hundreds of resources all at once. What you're seeing is Logos reading those resources, and (in the case of the Passage Guide) searching many others.

Switching to an SSD will certainly speed things up significantly for you. More RAM would help a bit, too, as then Logos could cache more files in memory.

You can also speed up Passage Guides by collapsing sections that you don't use very often. Logos will remember which sections are collapsed, and won't populate them in the future.

Thanks to all who gave me some information about how to deal with this issue. I did switch my hard drive to a Samsung 850 500gb SSD. It was easy to do, not too expensive and made a huge difference in the overall performance of my laptop. Now Logos might give me a 'not responding' message for a split second. It takes about 7 seconds to load from startup and layouts load as quickly. I did a passage guide and it loaded in about 15 seconds or so. Huge difference. Glad I made the switch.
