Logos 4 on the Mac with VMWare Fusion

Just wanted to post my observations after having tried Logos 4 under VMWare.

I've tried on two systems, a 2007 17" Macbook Pro with 4gig ram, 2gig devoted to the virtual machine running Windows 7 installed on its own partition via Bootcamp.

The second machine is a new 24" iMac, also 4gig ram with 2 dedicated to the virtual machine. This one running Windows Vista, installed on its own partition via Bootcamp.

As far as stability and functionality, everything appears to be good. I did have it crash on me one time when changing resolution by switching VMWare from Full Screen to Windowed and back again. Other than that, I've had no crashes and all features seem to work fine.

As far as speed, there is a big difference between running Logos in VMWare vs running when booted straight into Windows. When I boot into Windows via Bootcamp, Logos is a little sluggish but not bad (with a few exceptions - info window slow to display info, grid view Bible search result rendering, etc) and I assume it relates to the optimization that remains to be done.

When I load up VMWare and run Logos 4 it is very sluggish. Menus are slow to load, resources are slow, scrolling is jumpy, sluggish response when moving tabs around, etc, etc. Everything is sluggish making it just not a very good experience.

Logos 3 is as responsive under VMWare as when booted straight into Windows but 4 is a bit painful to use right now.

Mine has been sluggish. I usually get a delay of 3 to 7 seconds on tasks after I click. However, I have not reported it because I only allocated 512MB of RAM to my VMWare. Since I am outside the stated requirements, it seems to make little sense in reporting it is slow. Does that make sense? I hope so.

First you want to make sure your VMWare and VMWare Tools are up to date. Next, you can try disabling hardware acceleration:

In VMWare,

Power off the virtual machine.
Click on VM | Settings.
Click on Display.
Deselect Accelerate 3D graphics.

In Windows,

Click Start > Control Panel > Display.
Click Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot.
Move the Hardware acceleration slider one notch to the left toward None.
Click OK until you close the Display Properties dialog.
Run the application again. If the issue persists, return to step 1 and decrease the acceleration another notch.

Please let us know whether VMware updates, or the steps above, help improve performance.

Everything has been up to date. I disabled 3d accel and dropped Hardware accel, tried a few settings, I can see some improvement but it is small, things are still pretty jerky, slow, and unresponsive. Later I'll make a short vid showing settings and responsiveness.

Currently on a new 24" iMac, 2.66ghz core 2 duo, 4g ram, 2g assigned to the virtual machine, NVidia GeForce 9400 256m vram, VMWare Fusion running Windows Vista Home Premium set up on a separate partition via Bootcamp. When I boot straight into Vista through Bootcamp and try Logos 4 it runs very well.

I must be holding my chin right today. Things are still sluggish, but a bit better. Accelerate 3d disabled, hardware acceleration down by almost half. It's still noticeably more sluggish than when booted into Windows, but it is a bit more tolerable. Still, I really hope responsiveness is much better for VMWare Fusion users when this is released.

Another thing you might try, if you have a newer or beta version of VMWare, is to revert back to an older VMWare display adapter driver.

Deactivating "Accelerate 3D graphics" works for me under VMWare 7 beta, without having to do anything in Windows. Actually, I can't do the Vista side of things anyway, as the button for "Troubleshoot" is disabled.

I am holding my nose at the sluggish VMWare in hopes that the Mac version will be close behind 4.0 and I wont even need windows on my Mac.... right now Logos beta testing is the ONLY reason I am using it. Didn't Paul warn us not to enter again into slavery once we had escaped. :-)

All right, all right. Not everyone who goes Mac thinks they've entered the Promised Land. As a switcher of two years now, I have to say that I'm not particularly impressed. It's an OS. It has problems. XP had problems. Granted, Vista has way more, but Windows 7 is really quite nice!

Here's hoping that some of these troubleshooting tips will help me with my VMWare Fusion setup. I have a mid-2008 13" MacBook with 4 GB (2 for the VM), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (1 core for the VM), running VMWare Fusion 2.0.5. Haven't tried L4 on my Bootcamp partition yet since I'm limited in the available space in that partition.

You might want to know that VMware Fusion 2.0.6 was officially available on 1st October 2009. I have been using it for a couple of days with Logos 4 Beta4.

After downloading and indexing L4B4. I installed official Fusion 2.0.6. To speed things up, I bravely

a) Enable 3D Acceleration on VM and
b) set Hardware acceleration to 100%
c) Remember to Install VMware Tools from the VMware Fusion "Virtual Machine" Menu

against recommendation by Melissa on this thread should Fusion Crash during indexing. I am still waiting for it to crash, fortunately / unfortunately it did not crash yet (I will post result after beta 5 download and indexing). L4B4 is quite responsive in this configuration.
