Logos 4 Beta 1 DVD
The DVDs went out yesterday and should be arriving today, tomorrow, or Friday depending on your location. If you don't receive your DVD by Friday and would like to have a DVD, please let me know. Otherwise, feel free to join the download group.
In our haste to get the DVD out the door to you, the AutoRun file didn't get checked carefully enough. So to install it, you're going to need to manually navigate to the Logos4Setup.exe file in the root and double-click it to start installation.
Let us know if you have any problems with installation from the DVD.

Wow, Southern California never seemed so far away from Washington as it does when waiting for the v4 DVD. Testing v4 on a second computer that has no Logos 3 on it only increases the desire to get v4 on my Logos equipped laptop.

Yes. You'll be getting all of the Core, Media, and Syntax resources on the disk itself.

hi Phil -- It's late Wednesday now, but the DVD didn't make it to Eastern Oklahoma (45 min south of Tulsa) today. Perhaps tomorrow (or Friday). I'll let you know when.

I received my DVD yesterday (Wednesday) in the mail - Kent Washington. Install went perfect. As mentioned AutoRun did not work. It first installed .net framework without incident, and then onto the program. Logos 4 installed quickly, but slowed at identifying resources - not sure how long this took since I went to bed at this point. - I think that there was a reboot in there somewhere.
Woke up and the program was running, but still indexing and slowing down my machine. I played for a few minutes, opened a bible and commentary. Runs slow, but works faster when I paused indexing. I'll resume it when I can.

As I noted in another forum discussion I got the DVD yesterday and the install went fine (yes I had to manually click the Logos4Setup.exe file). I had moved all my PBB's out of the main folder and don't know if it helped or not. The program seemed to finish indexing after about 4 hours (a lot better than some).
I don't know what the new resources are, or how to tell if I got them.
I find the "Connecting to Logos" screen each time I open L4 to be annoying, and I'm sure some won't like having to connect to Logos to use L4. So far, I don't know why this is necessary.
None of my collections were imported. I hope this will be possible in the future, since I have over 2000 resources and rebuilding all the collections would take an enormous amount of time.
When I opened L4 this morning, it did not resume where I was when I closed the program. That's disappointing. I'll have to find out if it's possible to open to where you left off. The "snapshot" feature is nice, though, and I was able to open to my last workspace (AKA "Layout") pretty easily.
Looking at the NA27 Interlinear, I still have not found a way to view only those lines I want to. For me that's just Greek and the English gloss. All the other stuff just clutters the screen. The help file points me to View | Interlinear, but that option is only available in Libronix. This is not acceptable to me, and hopefully will be an option in a future version.
Searching BDAG for a word from the NA27 (w/GRAMCORD, Int.) requires too many steps. I can't simple double click on the word anymore. It requires right click, select "Lemma" then choose from one of only 5 lexicons displayed - thankfully BDAG was one of the lexicons offered. However, when I used the right arrow key to navigate to the next lexicon, I went instead to ISBE (revised) and the entry changed from the Greek word to, what I assume is the first listed English gloss. Switching back with the left arrow key gave me the correct entry in BDAG, but with the English gloss. I don't see an easy way to navigate to other lexicons. I find this unacceptable. Maybe there's a different way to do this.
In fact the right/left arrow keys don't seem to work on English Bibles either. The left arrow didn't seem to do anything. The right arrow key moved me through all bibles (regardless of language), until it got to the latin Vulgate, when it stopped moving right. There is are two little arrows on the upper right of the pane that allow me to go back -- kind of like a browser's 'back' button. But there is no history stored there to jump back several pages. Easily navigating through Bibles, lexicons and commentaries (with keyboard arrow keys, or some other way) is a deal-breaker for me. I hope this feature will come back in a later iteration of the beta.

The active window goes to the left pane, so with a little playing around I got things set up the way I prefer (Greek Text | English Text | Commentaries).
The Bible Word Study Report is nice in some respects and lacking in others. First, it does not give a simple and complete list of all the verses where a word is used. This was the main part of the report that I used. At the bottom of the report there is a section called "Textual Searches" but for New Testament it shows 0 hits in 0 verses for dwrea (sorry for the transliteration), although it shows 11 hits in the bar at the top, and in the Translation part of the report. If I click on the circle there, I get translations in the ESV that correspond to that translation, but these are all in English only. The Grammatical Relationships section has the material in Greek and English, but I find the division into all the Grammatical relationships distracting. I'd love to see a simple list of all the passages in canonical order. If I want to dig deeper, the Grammatical Relationships could be helpful. Still missing from this report is an option to view cognates. If I'm looking at dwrea, my study would be incomplete without also looking at dwrean (adj.), dwreomai, dwrnma and dwron, not to mention (again, sorry for the transliterations I'm not sure how to do Greek text here). Of course, I should also study synonyms for this word, and I would love it, if that were a part of this report, but that's on an entirely different level. I also think that for some terms it would be helpful to distinguish singular from plural as well (mercy, vs. mercies, e.g.), since there are times when the plural carries a different connotation than the singular.
My first impressions are that searching is faster and the interface looks nicer. But given what I note above, so far, it's harder to use than L3.

Rich, in order to do this you need to prioritize BDAG. Open My Library, and type BDAG in the resource bar. Click "Prioritize" on the right, and then drag BDAG over to the right side. This will (at least for now) be the only Lexicon there, and double clicking a greek word will take you immediately to BDAG.
Prioritizing resources is the replacement for keylinking. If you right click on a resource in "Prefer these resources" you can set special options for them. There are other threads that address this topic that you can look at for more help.

I prioritized as you suggested but double-clicking does not do anything. Do I need to close & reopen L4?

You can try closing and reopening, but on my system it takes place immediately. Just to be sure, are you double clicking a word in the NA27 or the NA27 with McReynolds? I am trying to double click now on the NA27 with McReynolds and I can confirm that nothing happens. This appears to be a bug.
As for the panes, you should be able to drag them. If you grab a window (by the tab area) and drag it, the screen will turn blue as you move it in different places showing you where it will drop. See the pics below (the first pic is me dragging a resource from the 2/3 pane to take up 1/3 of the screen. The second pic shows the resulting division). Is this what you're talking about?
What you can't do, unlike 3.0 is drag windows so you have random "unused space," or at least it is much harder to acheive that. The windows will always fill up space. But once you have three or more windows open, you can easily arrange them into 3 columns or various other configurations.

The DVD arrived in this morning's mail and my wife brought it to me at the church. Install went swift and smooth, although as you noted I needed to manually start the executable.
It's now several hours later and I note that the systray shows 3,436 resources remaining on the indexing.
Ummm, for all the built in sync processes, I sure would be nice if the indexing from my laptop could be imported to my desktop. But then, I suspect that's a humongous file.
Install went very well -- no glitches. When it asked me to sign in, apparently I fat fingered my password, although I thought I got it right. But then, when I retyped it, all was well.
Aside from testing the program in general -- is there anything specific you want me (us) to look at, for, on the DVD install?
My desktop unit at work is a couple of years old, but it's 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 (sorry, it's not a Dual Core or anything, but it is Hyperthreading). It's running Win XP/Pro SP3 with 2gb RAM
This evening, or tomorrow, I'll install from the DVD on my Dell Studio running a 64 bit Vista OS. I'll let you know how that fairs

I got my DVD and tried to install; but it said that I had a runtime error...see pic.
I had downloaded the download to hold me and uninstalled it before trying to install the DVD version.

Yes it's with the McReynolds and Grammcord. (The version without the Grammcord works the same.) Using the NA27 (with no interlinear) does work. (BTW, trying this on the NA26 causes Logos 4 to crash.)

I'm sure glad that I read this! I thought my DVD wasn't working and I was going to have to send it back. My computer crashed early this morning and I've spent the day reloading everything so Logos 4 arrived right on time since it corresponds with what I've been doing all day long. I'm in the process of loading it right now and I'll check back later to note my impressions.

Just as a reminder - if you are in the DVD group, read Phil's original post. Auto Play will not work nor does double-clicking on the drive letter. You need to right-click and hit explore. Then click the setup file and you are off to the V4 races!

The DVD arrived today (MI) and the installation went smoothly once I navigated to the executable. The installation seemed to go quickly, less than a half hour (it finished while I was eating dinner).

Wow! Got my DVD today and started the installation (yes had to manually start the installation) and Wow, up and running in less than 30 minutes! And Wow, the home page, I love it, crisp, clean, clear.
Ok, now what next? I knew the application was indexing, everybody has been saying it’s taken their installation hours so I figure I’ll be here a while but it’s moving along pretty good. Ok, looked to see if my library is there and everything appears to be there including my collections and Wow, the speed, much improved over 3 and smooth! Checked out a few of my resources they all seem to be here. I love the way I’m navigating, kinda aimlessly, is there a user’s guide or manual? (What am I thinking?!) Checked out Exegetical guide, everything looks good here UNTIL I hit the sound/pronounce icon (nothing happened the first couple of times, no sound, no nothing then I get this ugly message from Windows: Logos 4 has stopped working! Oh no! My first crash! Ok, go to desktop and restart, no problem, wonder what happened? Let’s go back to the Exegetical Guide and try it again. Yep, definite problem with sound function, second crash!
Restarting the program, definitely not crazy about that logon screen, can we turn that off? System comes back up great. Won’t try sound again for a while. 62 resources remaining to be indexed and I’m done. Might try sound after indexing’s done though I doubt that could be the issue. So far, I’m liking what I see in spite of the 2 crashes. I think I’m going to enjoy this new version. Wait until the Accordance folks see this, I’ve got a professor friend that’s an Accordance fan. The two of us spend too much time debating which application is better!
Ok, that’s my initial look and reaction to 4, all in all I like it! I’m looking forward to further testing. I promise to be more serious about reporting anomalies in the future….thought I’d pass the time with you over my shoulder.

The initial reaction will be to import from v3, where I have collections for all resources. But the main categories of commentaries, bibles and dictionaries are fairly easy to build with queries and the speed of searching the entire library has already negated the need for me to have extensive collections. I would suggest that Logos provide starter collections as below, which would get people quickly familiar with the query method.
All Bibles -> type:bible
English Bibles -> type:bible lang:English
Greek Bibles -> type:bible lang:Greek
Hebrew Bibles -> type:bible lang:(Hebrew, Aramaic)
ALL except Bibles -> rating:>=0 -type:bible
Commentaries -> type:commentary
(some metadata errors & personal choice will see some resources put into the Minus bin. I also add the Reverse Interlinears eg. ESV, LEB, NRSV, NASB95 into Greek/Hebrew Bibles!)
To make a Lexicon collection more feasible via query I would suggest language codes for Gk-Eng, Heb-Eng be established to separate them from type:dictionary (or allow multiple language tags eg. English, Greek).

Good news! DVD snail mail has made it as far as central Washington. Installed and indexed 1350 resources in 75 minutes.
First impressions :
1) Very clean interface which requires a little bit of experimentation before you begin to get a feel for where to find things. Pretty intuitive and easy to remember if you give it a chance. Definitely not the old Word/Excel 2003 UI ... i.e., constantly looking under scores of seemingly unorganized rocks until you find the function you are looking for.
2) I noticed that the program is phoning home/logging in to a server in order to sync resources and update various items on the homepage. It would be nice if I could then open the Logos website and be already logged in.
3) I wish the buttons on my mouse were more utilized ... specifically "forward" and "back"
4) Notes are looking and handling much better than L3
5) Can we have a roadmap to let us know where the files and directories are located for L4?
6) I am curious about the resource index. Typically, indexes are notorious for developing errors and crosslinks that often times act like little time bombs waiting to go off and discombobulate everything (and ALWAYS at THE worst time). Is there or will there be a "fixit" utility to clean things up? Or is it not needed?
More experimentation over the weekend ... gonna spend a couple of days with the older daughter and her husband in Portland. Right now, however, I can smell the corned beef and am heading for the dinner table!
