Setting a resource

Hi guys,

I have the Biblia Sacra Vulgata. I'd like to set it up so that whenever I double click on a Latin word, my Collins Latin Dictionary automatically opens to the definition. Right now it's connected to another resource I'm not too fond of. Any ideas? Thanks!

Brian, in Library right click on the Collins dictionary and choose Priortize this Resource. Then click on the word Prioritize in Library to open the privatization panel. Make sure Collins is listed above any other Latin dictionary. If not, drag it there.

I'd actually already tried that. Collins was on the bottom of the priorities list, but no other Latin resources were there. Just for fun I dragged it to the top but no go. The "Dictionary of Latin Forms" is the resource that always pops up when I double click on a Latin word.

Perhaps the only way is to have the Vulgate and Collins open side by side with the panes both set to A?

Actually, linking the panes didn't work either.

It doesn't look like that resource has proper Latin headwords set up for the Latin to English portion of the resource. This prevents any lookups from happening correctly. You can confirm this by scrolling around in that portion of the resource and noting that nothing shows up in the navigation box at the top of the panel.

I'll make sure this gets reported to the correct team so that the resource can be fixed.

even though Andrew suggested otherwise (and who am I to speak up against a Faithlife employee?), I think you are encountering just standard Logos behavior as designed.

There are several resources I know of (and happen to own) with the title "Biblia Sacra Vulgata" - currently Logos sells this resource under that title:

Back in the days there once was a bundle called SESB which contained the "Biblia Sacra Vulgata (SESB)" which now is sold as Vulgate with apparatus:

I assume you are using one of those. Both of those Vulgate editions contain the Latin text without morphology - i.e. Logos does not know about the underlying lemma of that form. The lemma is the 'lexicon form' you would find as heading in your preferred Latin lexicon. However, from an un-morphed bible text Logos can't look up the lemma.

If you double-click on any surface text word, it is highly likely that this is a Latin form which is not in lexical form, but showing a variation of that, respecting e.g. singular/plural and the case for a noun or the tense for a verb. Those forms are not part of standard lexicons, but only of "analytical lexicons". If you now double-click on a word that by chance is in its lexical form, or doesn't change (such as neque) , it will open your highest prioritized Latin Lexicon - in my case Lewis & Short rather than Collins. Otherwise, Logos will open an analytical lexicon such as the Dictionary of Latin Forms. Those are great tools! The Analytical Lexicon will have every form that exist in the surface text and show you their lexical form (i.e. the Latin lemma) plus a small explanation. If this is not what you want in terms of depth of analysis, you can easily go to your preferred lexicon by double clicking the lemma/lexicon form in the DoLF's entry.

Alternatively you could utilize a Vulgate edition that is morphologically tagged, i.e. 'knows' about the lemma (which you can see by right-clicking the word). In this case, double-clicking will bring you right to your preferred lexicon. The only such tagged Vulgate version in the Logos universe that I know of is the Clementine Vulgate

(The situation is just the same with untagged / tagged Greek bible editions and respective Analytical lexicons)

That said, it looks like the Latin to English terms starting with A-K are missing the correct headword tagging. The rest seem to be correct.

I'm not aware of any plans to add this information to that resource.

Yes, you are right. I knew about that issue, but somehow it didn't fully click in my head when I read 'Collins' (and I had assumed this to be solved some time ago, seems I didn't register your last post in that thread).

It's just that the usage of analytical lexicons for not morphologically tagged texts is such a great benefit (and the Latin one given to us for free! Thanks FL!). This thread inspired me to build a Reading List of Latin Bible Texts in Logos indicating their tagging.
