"How Long O Lord" before Logos works on Mac?

I need help. Or, Logos on Mac needs help. Not sure which it is anymore.

I have invested a lot of money into Logos on my Mac, but for as long as I have had it running on my Mac, I have always felt like this is a beta because it over the years is almost always painfully slow and crashes constantly. Unfortunately, so much so, that I hardly use Logos even though I have put a lot of money into library resources. I find myself using (and buying more books on that platform instead) OliveTree's app because it is fast and basically crash-free.

I am not running Logos on a skimpy computer. I have a 13" Macbook Air (256GB SSD) with 8GB RAM. On this same system, I run Adobe apps like Photoshop CS and Lightroom, with no issues. The hardware should be plenty, but Logos continues to be slow in almost all aspects (startup, searching, changing screens) and today, crashed 5 times in a row just when typing in a Bible reference or when having a floating window of another ESV passage.

I am running the latest MacOS, and my Logos is 7.4.0.0051.

Is there anyone out there who is having performance issues with Logos on a Mac? Are there fixes to crashes and slowness?

I am a cross-cultural missionary living in an area with limited Internet and I myself, am very limited in time (ex. I do not have time to constantly be searching and trying to get my Bible software to work).

I have turned to Olive Tree and primary use resources from them on my iPad because I just do not have time to open the hood and comb through forums to get Logos to work. Honestly, I cringe when I go to open it.

Oh, and this is a brand new installation, as I recently migrated from another Mac...

Is there anyone out there who is having performance issues with Logos on a Mac? Are there fixes to crashes and slowness?

The app does run slower than some other apps, but issues of severe crashes and slowness doesn't necessarily affect all users. The best way to diagnose the problem is to explain the issue clearly and provide logs (see my signature line). Are there steps to reproduce? What are you doing at the time? What does your layout look like?

I use Verbum (catholic variant) daily, it has been weeks since a crash for me although a couple versions back was very buggy and glitches so much that it was difficult to use. I use OT less often but have had several crashes in the last month even Accordance that I usually find the most stable a version back was crashing a lot For me. There is major room for improvement in Faithlife apps but I have not had serious crashing issues with it lately.

Hi Ken,

We are actually focusing on improving app performance right now. As to the crashes you've experienced, not everyone has the same crashes and even similar steps can cause different crashes. The more info we get from users the better we are able to get them fixed. You can help us by creating a thread in the Logos 7 forum when they happen. Describe any steps to reproduce that crash, relevant resources, and logs (they need to be saved after the crash has happened but before you restart the app). You can find instructions on how to enable logging in my signature under this post.

I've had some trouble myself on the Mac. The best way to get decent performance out of Logos is not to load it down. I'm currently drilling through the book of Ephesians. I'm going by chapters, but I don't load it that way. I do one passage group at a time. I've got gobs of commentaries, but just use a few. The first run is going to be slower, but it's much faster the second time.

The Mac is a memory hog. Logos will use every drop. I use Memory Cleaner to clear the RAM every so often.

Logos 7 is light years ahead of Logos 4. It's getting better. I'm still running it on a conventional drive and it's not half as bad as some think.

Hi Ken,

I feel your pain as I have had ongoing problems with Logos on my Mac. The speed does not bother me so much but the hanging. With me, the problems started last Nov/Dec. Since then I have been experiencing multiple hangings of Logos per day. I have had days when I spent my entire quiet time trying to convince Logos to start, but did not succeed. In the end, I took it as an application lesson for patience.

I have submitted countless logs and samples to Faithlife support. Fortunately, FL has become more responsive and they seem to be taking our problems seriously. However, it looks like it only affects a small number of us and the problem is not easy to reproduce.

Right now, I have a 70% success rate if I start Logos with the command key, wait a minute before I click on "Sign in", wait at least another minute before loading a layout. Then wait another minute before doing anything else. If I do this, things are more likely to succeed.

I hope you can find a workaround to get Logos to be a bit more reliable.

I'm running Logos 7 with 14500 resources on a 2010 Mac Pro and a brand new MacBook Pro. Neither of those computers has the slightest problem running. I leave the app running all the time on both machines.

Yeah I hope they fix the battery draining issue. For now I just use low as possible brightness (depending on the light setting of the room) and it works okay, wish it was better.

I can echo this sentiment using a late 2012 27" iMac with 15,891 resources. However, it is a bit slow changing layouts. That being said, I must admit that I tend to create very complex layouts [:P]
