NASB in Paragraph Format

Hello Logos!
I'm sure others would agree—we need a paragraph version of the NASB 1995. Every other digital edition of the NASB is paragraph form. It would make this resource so much more readable!

Hi Gavin! [:)]
This is a somewhat frequent request. Unfortunately I don't think it is likely to happen. The base text of the NASB is in a verse by verse format, per the translators decision. There is a special copyrighted version available in paragraph formatting, but it would be considered a different resource. <If> it were to come, it would require a secondary purchase plus it would not have a reverse interlinear associated with it. Would you still be interested? I think it would be a tough sell for many users. It would be nice though! [Y]

Hey Alabama!
I hear ya. Honestly, I would purchase it as a secondary resource. It seems like instead of losing the interlinear information, Logos could just reformat the text and use the same interlinear.
Hopefully the 2017-2018 NASB update will be in paragraph format. Seems weird that the '77 NASB is in paragraph but the 1995 isn't.

I understand your thinking, but the translators / publishers / copyright holders didn't want it that way. The paragraph formated version is a different resource (and I believe publisher), so it isn't as clear as it might seem. [:s]

If the newer revisions of the NASB are not in paragraph form, then why are they sold that way in physical form?

It is my understanding that there isn't a newer revision (currently). The latest revision is 1995, which is what we have. I know that Zondervan has changed the formatting from what was released by Lockman at that time, which is clearly line by line. It is even referenced in the preface.

By the way, whenever the next update happens (referenced above), I assume that will be a "new translation" and will require a separate purchase & RI. That is when we are most likely to get a paragraph version.

Yeah, hopefully the new NASB will be paragraph.
Weirdly enough, I think Logos is the only digital edition that is verse-by-verse. The following are all in paragraph (and have copyright Lockman, not Zondervan):
- Lockman's digital eBooks (on Amazon and such)
- YouVersion
- Bible Gateway
- Accordance
I have asked a contact @ Lockman about it being a different copyright/publisher.

I like the line by line presentation of NASB95 in Logos. However, there is still a "paragraph marker" in that version. Each change of pericope/paragraph is indicated by a bold verse number.
For what it's worth, I often quote the NASB95 in my writing, and I occasionally choose different places to begin new paragraphs. How such things should be presented is very much a matter of opinion, especially since they are often foreign to the original texts.

I hear you, David. To me, it feels like every book reads like Proverbs when each line is broken up.

Hello all,
I heard back from Lockman today:
"We don’t have license restrictions regarding paragraph vs. verse format and our texts are coded for either way. We assume that when Logos converted it for their software they did not code it for both verse and paragraph format.
We’ll contact them and let them know about the issue and see if they will re-process the text. We don’t know what is involved with that process on their end."
This would be awesome!!!

Per Lockman: "Logos has now been contacted and they are looking into the technical changes needed to allow the NASB to switch between verse and paragraph format in their system."

That would be great. I've been using NASB77 when I want paragraph format and NASB95 when I want tagging etc. I always thought it was odd because in my print Bibles 95 has paragraph format and 77 does not.

Sure thing Robert M. Warren! I'm excited.

We updated NASB95 so that it has paragraph formatting. We're planning on pushing the update out on Tuesday.
For those who preferred the one verse/one line formatting we'll still have a visual filter that allows you to switch to one verse/one line formatting.

I appreciate Faithlife allowing us the option of using the one verse/one line format if we prefer. I hope the new visual filter will reflect the current format exactly as it currently appears (one verse/one line, consistent single spacing between verses, and bold verse numbers indicating new paragraphs). I find this unique format ideal for studying and it was an important factor in my original decision to make the NASB95 my preferred Bible.

Sorry to rain on everybody, but the new format is a pain to read and caught me completely off guard:
1) The verse numbers get lost in the paragraph text and look too much like the note #s
2) The visual filter wastes a blank line between (most) every verse which means less text on the screen
3) The pericopes fall inline with the verses rather than centered on their lines (plus they don't have blank lines around them) so they get lost in the text rather than stand out
4) The visual filter loses the chapter heading completely (minor, but annoying)
Please include this change in the release notes. Otherwise, why bother with release notes?
Can you offer a way to get back to how it was? Or at least, get rid of the blank lines between the verses with visual effects turned on.

Andrew,
I see some of your concerns- if they change the note number color to red or green, or maybe verse numbers- that would eliminate a lot of ambiguity there.
I believe in L3- you could change the verse number color- wish that would come back- I prefer either lite red or green personally.

You may be right but I own strong tied NASB in both Accordance and Olivetree formats that have always allowed for paragraph or verse by verse viewing. I have owned original language tied NASB in both for over 15 years. Like I said you may be right but paragraph view is not a new item in the digital world. Indeed OnlineBible I have owned the NAS95 with strongs numbering since 1996 and it has markings to indicate paragraphing (and if you copy it for pasting it is in paragraph form, so if FL has a contract for verse only it is a very odd contract.

Probably not. If you read through this thread, you will see that out-of-the-blue, FL made the change. I don't know what made them make the change now, but it has already been done! (With a few complaints already registered).

That, and from the forums it looks like Logos users have been asking for the paragraph format for like 7 years. There are posts as old as 2010 asking for this. I actually think the change makes the NASB easier to read and so much more inviting.

I agree. While I have seen some copies of the NASB in verse-by-verse format, it hasn't been all of them. In fact, all but one copy of the NASB I own (physical copies, that is) are in paragraph format. I find it much easier to read and follow.

I am not so impressed by what has happened to the old verse at a time view.
Extraneous space between verses if one retains non-Bible text (which I want to do).
Here is an example with non-Bible text enabled:
There are blank lines dividing verses that cover a single sentence. Not good.
Here is the same text with non-Bible text not enabled:
What I want (and I imagine almost everyone else would want) is for the text to look like the lower example when non-Bible text is enabled. That will come pretty close to what we had before paragraph formatting was added in.

Yep- has a few hiccups but I'll take it- I have been using nasb77 for years for the paragraph view, so I'll work with it, maybe as time moves on, and there is enough request/ complaints they will address some of the issues with it.
