New i7 7700K or AMD 1700X

Does anybody know if Logos is a multi-threaded application? It seems like Logos is taking a lot of Horsepower these days to run fast. I am in the process of building a new computer and Logos is the primary application on my computer. I was wondering if Logos would benefit from more cores (8 for AMD) or more from speed (Intel i7 7700K). I have a 4K 42" TV for a Monitor so I have lots of screen space to have lots of books open in Logos. What would be recommended for the best performance with Logos 7?

The AMD with 8 core and 16 threads is formidable and beats the Intel where they can be utilized. As it seems only to suffer with games I'd give it a go.

Thanks Dave for the reply. That's the sort of info I was looking for. I am not a gamer so I want to run applications like Logos and MS Word, a Database, and other text editing and processing software, and some church video software. I like to leave everything open especially in Logos with 10+ books and Bibles, several notes files and search panels open. I have a ~ 5-year-old i7 930 (I think that's gen 2, X58 Chipset). It has served me well, but it started to fail with the memory, so before It dies I want to replace it with something I can get another 5 years out of. I think I'm going to give AMD a try this time.

Fred, I don't think the four extra cores will do much for you in ordinary operation. It is possible you'd save a bit of time in large or complex searches or while indexing. I have an i7 7700 (four core, eight logical processor) desktop that is brand new, outfitted with a 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and it responds quite quickly. It is pretty new to me so I haven't tried everything with it, but I can't imagine too many normal scenarios that twice as many cores would add much value, even though it sounds as if you'd get twice the computer by doing so.

An SSD and 16 GB of RAM are two things you should have in your new system. Using multiple resources is 'disc'-access speed dependent rather than processor dependent, so the SSD will be your best asset for having many resources open simultaneously.

Your probably correct Mark. It's more about disk access speed, and RAM. I have one resource that I use frequently that takes a while to load. I have complained about it before, but nobody else seems to have a problem with it, so it must be my computer. I will get a new 500 GB SSD that is about 4 times faster than my current SSD. I don't have to be an elitist with the fastest PC, it's just that if I am buying a new PC now I may as well get something that I don't have to replace anytime soon and if Logos is my primary application I want something that runs well especially for it.

I remember others had mentioned before the graphics capability of the computer also impacts Logos performance. For example, I have integrated graphics on my laptop and Logos can't even play the Mobile Ed videos without them being jerky. What type of graphics card are you getting on your new machine?

I've been reading about the new processors from AMD. Turns out they made ONE processor, and artificially turned off cores. So the smallest Ryzen and the largest current Ryzen are all the same exactly in terms of hardware. Some had a core that didn't pass QC some are normal chips with no defects. its a little bit of a gamble. So I'll just make sure I get one I'd be happy with if I end up getting one of the ones with a core disabled due to damage.

I'd probably get a cheaper ryzen chip, and a more expensive motherboard that allows unlocking such cores. Still will probably be less than a current gen i7 with perhaps better performance for Logos. Don't really care about gaming.

This is common with all chip makers as they want to maximise production from their manufacturing line(s). Whether a core(s) is defective or marked as defective, the chip is still tested for its intended role.

LED TV models are predictably more expensive with size up to 65" but there is a much bigger gap to the 72 inch model. I was told (last year) that it was because the LED screen manufacturer had to re-tool his line for these newer sizes.

I have the 42" 4K TV screen. For me, this is the ideal size. I get 4K resolution with approximately the same pixel size as a Small desktop monitor. That means it's like putting 4 monitor screens together with no gap. With my eyesight that is great for font size and for desktop real-estate. I can put Logos up full size and a web browser next to it so I can take notes and check verses as I watch a YouTube Sermon or video. This TV cost me less than $400 so It's a great deal for me, plus it's a TV if I ever want to watch it or use it as a DVD player/Smart TV. The only problem I have with it is Yellow highlighting isn't as bright as on my laptop. For the price, I can't complain.

AMD has had a few ventures into CPU's that were faster or in other ways better than Intel. The big problem is that other chip makers (graphics cards, e.g.) create with Intel spec's in mind, it may also be that some high level programming is also designed for Intel spec's. What this has meant in the past is that those who have gone with AMD have found the advantages to be short-lived.

If you tend to be an early-adopter, and don't mind taking risks, you might find that historical experience no longer applies. If not, stick with the industry standard: Intel.

Oh, I'm sure that there are AMD afficionados and sales reps that would disagree with me (and a lot of others). And I'm glad AMD is around for the sake of helping to keep Intel from having a complete monopoly. I just wouldn't have an AMD system as my main work machine.

Don't worry about the CPU too much but the ssd configuration in a macbook pro would definitely help! I'm sure certain pc motherboards can do it too?
