Suggestion: James Burton Coffman Commentaries

The James Burton Coffman commentary set of the Old and New Testament would be a valuable addition to the LOGOS collection. Coffman was an excellent conservative scholar of the scriptures and his commentary set not only provides his judgement and analysis, but he also includes many other citations as well.

This would be an exceptional addition to any library!

Anyone can access this commentary online to see how good it is. Coffman sincerely believes in the inspired word of God and responds to those critics who deny God inspired all scripture. Here is his comments on 2 Tim 3:16 from his commentary...

Verse 16
Every Scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness:

There are two ways of rendering this verse, as seen by a glance at the KJV, compared to this.

Every Scripture that is inspired of God (ASV).

All scripture is given by the inspiration of God (KJV).

Many scholars such as Lenski and Lipscomb insist that there is no difference in the meaning of these renditions; but such a viewpoint has always been a mystery to this writer. The passages simply do not say the same thing. "The first of these renderings necessarily implies that there are some Scriptures which are not inspired"; ^F28 and, in context, it is impossible to suppose that Paul meant to imply that.

All Scripture ...
In distinction from the "sacred writings" (2 Timothy 3:15), "all Scripture" here means everything which, through the testimony of the Holy Spirit in the church, is recognized by the church as canonical. When Paul wrote these words, the direct reference was to a body of sacred literature which even then contained more than the Old Testament. ^F29

Is inspired of God ...
The Greek words here are "God-breathed," meaning that the canonical writings are absolutely trustworthy. The great prophecies of the New Testament have been and are being fulfilled. Every line of it has stood the test of centuries, shattered every attack of evil men, and yet stands enshrined in the hearts of millions as God's saving word for lost men.

I don't know about him much, but I've heard good things about this commentary. In may case, I think it would bring a good balance since among cessationist, conservative authors, most of them are Calvinists. At least I don’t know of many modern Bible commentaries, for instance, from conservative evangelical authors who are not Calvinists. So far I have not found any Baptist author (author of Bible Commentaries), for instance, who is not Calvinist. I am sure there are, but I just don’t know much of them. I am still new on the commentaries, so I will be glad to be wrong in this one. I don't think Burton was a Baptist author either, but at least he seemed to have solid Christian conservative roots.

Coffman was with the Churches of Christ and I am reasonably certain he was not Calvinist.

I too would be interested in this set, but I would be more likely to purchase it as part of a restoration movement heritage base package (or whatever it would be called), if such a thing were ever made available for Logos. It seemed like there had beem several threads about it but then the idea either went by the wayside or is being pursued without public comment from Faithlife.

Did some reading here- its not for me, but based upon what I have seen of his works- it would probably only work as a collection in CP- it will have a limited audience.

I could hardly find a modern commentary that is both Baptist (Conservative) and non Calvinist, which is kind of strange because I understand that most of the SBC (for instance) are actually non Calvinist (there was a huge declaration about it a few years ago). It's always great to have different points of views about this subject. I found this series Randall House Bible Commentary (9 vols.) which appears to be associated to a small Baptist denomination that appears to be very similar than SBC. I think I will buy it in the near future....

Carlos, I'm glad to have been able to help. I'm also glad you found a commentary set that meets your needs. Is this it: Randall House Bible Commentary (9 vols.)? Thanks for mentioning it; this isn't one that I had looked at before. If you're coming from an SBC perspective, you might at some point still find the Coffman commentaries useful. My experience has been that if you set aside two issues - the theology of baptism and the use of only a cappella singing in worship - the churches of Christ and conservative Southern Baptists are more similar than either one would like to admit.

I think I read that is Baptist, at least his author is, I can't remember how I found out about it... But please check that before you buy it.... I can't recommended it because I have not read it yet, but so far it looks exactly what I am looking for....

I’m attending a local SBC church now, a very small Hispanic ministry within the Anglo church (God bless them for supporting this ministry), and so far I like the doctrine. Some friends mentioned it to me, but I had already became aware of Baptist doctrine from TV shows. I prayed to God for discerning when watching that. My introduction was John MacArthur, and I read his Bible Study, but it kinds of bothers me sometimes his strong position on Calvinism. Putting that aside, I agree on just about everything else with him except on that small, "peripheral" subject.

I also found the Baptist Study Bible, by W.A. Criswell and Paige Patterson, paper edition (I had it for a couple of years but I was not reading it, but now I started). These two guys have been SBC presidents, in the past, in the good old days . I thought this Bible Study was in logos, but I think they have an equivalent edition (Believer’s something, I’ll find out more about it when I get the funds and will be ready to buy de digital edition). I understand that Paige Patterson is not calvinist because he signed the 2012 “‘Non-Calvinist’ Southern Baptists issue statement of beliefs”. I have just stared with it, but I’d have to read the commentaries in Roman 9 to know for sure. This is a one-book Bible study, and it doesn’t have comments on every single verse of the Bible).

I think I’d agree with your statement that Churches of Christs and SBC are very similar in doctrine, for the little I know so far from the former, and of course taking into account those to minor issues too. I also found several others, one of them is a commentary from a Wesleyan author (I made a “Non-Calvinist layout” in my Logos6 with 4 publications I found so far until I buy more). They are not Calvinists, and I suspect that the Wesleyan Churches are still conservatives in doctrine, at least compared with other Methodist (I am not judging them, though, I am just saying what I suspect so far because I don’t know much about these organizations). I think most Non-Calvisints commentaries I’ll find are either Wesleyan, the Churches of Christ (although this last denomination is very small, according to Wiki), or Lutheran. I think if I can find a commentary from a Lutheran author (Missouri Synod not ELCA), I will be very happy (and even more happy when I can get it), as long as they don’t try to push their infant baptism too much. I’ll have to build my Non-Calvinist library little by little [:)]...

Anyway, I hope this Calvinism v. Arminian issue won't divide the SBC....
