New iOS 11 and New iPads

With the recently announced iOS 11 and new iPads at WWDC,

1) Is the Mobile app team working on making sure the FL apps will be compatible with and take advantage of the new multitasking and drag-and-drop features available in iOS 11? (right-swipe to open a Slide Over window never works reliably for me in the FL apps)

2) With much more powerful iPad / Pro hardware, will FL consider adding more powerful local (offline) features to the FL apps e.g. offline Guides, or even going toward full-fledged full-functioned study/research apps on the iPad instead of just reader apps)?

From past comments by FL, not specifically about this issue but about apps for specific operating systems, they have said the user base is not large enough for the development effort to be worthwhile i.e. they are not going to make enough money to cover costs. I can see them extending that sort of response to an iOS app that takes advantage of iPad Pro hardware specifically, particularly since mobile apps are 'free'. But that's just my take on the silence rather than FL's position.

I also think they are putting a lot of effort into the web app and part of that project is a new annotations platform that will eventually be ported over to the desktop and mobile apps so I'm not expecting too much in the way of major innovation for the mobile apps over the next half year - but once again just my reading of situation which could be wrong. In fact I'd be happy to be wrong and hope we do see some significant updates in mobile app over next half year.

I'm sort of assuming that continued work on the web app will help the development of the mobile app. I'm sort of hoping that they eventually replace the mobile app with a version of the web-app that's optimised for touch screen and includes offline support for documents and books (as currently possible on the mobile app).

I'd love for them to add full interlinear support offline, but other features are less of an immediate issue. I'd like offline support for the tools/guides, but I if I had to pick between stripping those down to Olive Tree resource guide level stuff or online, I'd pick the latter, and deal with manually looking stuff up when I don't have internet access.

That's just my uninformed ramblings/musings.

If i had of continued my ramblings to the next level I would have said something similar James. Most definitely for Chromebooks, Android tablets, iPads, 2in1 type devices etc i can see FL pointing users towards using the web app for advanced functionality. i don't know enough about the technology whether the web app will play nicely on smaller devices like phones. From a cost point of view it would make sense though for them to want to be able to eliminate the need to have to develop separate iOS and Android reader apps in addition to a desktop app for two operating systems and the web app. Add into the mix different branded apps for each of those platforms - Logos, Verbum, Noet and Vyrso and you can see why reducing those options down in the long term would make sense - if customers can accept not having as many choices.

You should always view it as incompatible, and unsupported by FL. Even if it works today, it might not tomorrow when Apple ships a new build.

Downloaded and tested on an iPad Air 2. First app launch scared me a bit but then it launched and seemed to work fine.

It does seem to freeze and crash each time I open the split screen function. Not sure if it was an app issue, beta issue or possibly not enough resources on the older hardware to function.

It is to be expected in a beta test though.

But for the less pessimistic vantage point, it works very well for me on iOS 11 on both iPad and iPhone, at the moment. [;)] It's always gotten better for me with each new public beta build, not worse. Never had an issue on any public betas with Bible app.

Note, however, that the Proclaim remote is useless on iOS 11 at the moment...which makes Alabama somewhat of a realist and less of a pessimist. lol. [Y]

I don't view it pessimisticly, but pragmatically. I enjoy beta testing, but you should never beta test on a "production" device... In layman's terms: The purpose of beta testing is to work out bugs. The developers don't care if they "break your build" because "The purpose of beta testing is to work out bugs." Many users don't understand that, but rather think that beta testing is an opportunity for the developers to give early access to some users... but that is only partially the case, because again: "The purpose of beta testing is to work out bugs."

I have had significant issues with both Apple and Faithlife betas at some point or another which made my device useless for a period of time. The fix may be days or (hopefully not) weeks away from being released. In light of this, you should always view them as incompatible. If you want to beta test, GREAT! We need beta testers. But you should plan for the possibility that your build might break and Logos become unavailable for an undetermined period of time.
