minimal requirements for smooth and zippy Logos 7 full feature set running windows tablet?

Hey folks,

well I'm loving logos 7 desktop and the full feature set.

I'm thinking I'll sell my ipad and buy a windows tablet as logos is primarily what I need it for and I want to have the desktop features with me on the go.

Typically I'll have Hebrew bible, Aramaic targums and greek LXX stuff open with visual filters, using lexicons.

I do morpho searches as well and prolific highlighting / note taking.

Several window tabs open at a time. Often I have the reverse interlinear stuff on so I can just move my mouse over a Hebrew word and the parallel Greek LXX shows the corresponding word/words (I know there is some processing going on behind the scenes because it takes a second or two sometimes on my current set up).

Things can be a bit slow on my big "desktop replacement" notebook though so I'm a bit concerned about investing in a windows tablet just to find sluggishness thwarting my study time. It's an older Intel quadcore set up, 8 gig ram, no SSD.

What minimum specs do you think I need to be sure to avoid frustrating sluggishness on a windows tab?

Budget *is* an issue teaching here in the 3rd world so let's not go crazy.

Please don't just quote the system requirements per Logos because I've read others complaining that didn't work for them.

My experience (mostly on a Mac) is that while 8GB of RAM is usable 24 makes a huge difference. SSD should not push the price up much at all these days and should be as big as you beggar yourself to get.

I agree with Mike, but will add: I believe 128GB should be considered a minimum, unless you don't have any resources at all and don't use Logos as a library. With 128, I would consider a machine for 1) Logos 2) Word (and maybe ppt, but not any other office app) and 3) nothing else. SSD's aren't the same as traditional hard drives (needing excessive room to breathe), but you still do need empty space.

I'm wanting to move to a windows tablet though (probably Windows 10).

I understand from your replies that my current set up can be improved if I switch to an SSD.

What about for a windows tablet? I can't really spend more than $650 but used is ok.

It seems most in that price range have 4gig RAM and 64 gig to 128 gig EMMC.

Would something like this run logos the way I do OK?

Even though tablets are a different beast, it's better to have 8 Gb memory minimum, and 128 Gb SSD minimum. Those really are minimums, not recommended (which would be more like 16 Gb memory, and 256 Gb SSD).

Please try to avoid anything that only has 4 Gb memory or 64 Gb SSD. It would be difficult to fit Windows, Logos, and your library (resources) on 64 Gb SSD, and using external storage would definitely slow things down more.

Those beasts get very very expensive to push past the 128gig level it seems.

Usually in Logos I'm using lexicons, original language stuff, and a guide. I like to use the tools where you can highlight one word in Hebrew and the other window automatically highlights the corresponding Greek words from a Greek translation. That's slow for me now so that's where I'm assuming the processing is happening.

I rarely use commentaries. Probably biggest resource I use is TDNT (Theological Dictionary of the New Testament).

So when you guys are responding 8 gig minimum Ram, I look at the windows tablets out there and it's sticker shock to go above 4 gig Ram. I'm just thinking the way the extended memory works on those devices must be faster than traditional Hard Drive.

I would not install much on the device except Logos. The idea is dumping my ipad air2 because I really want the full logos features with me (not just the mobile features) but the way I works, if I have to wait for logos to do stuff it irks me and messes with my thought process. Especially if I'm teaching and I want to find something on the fly want to keep the rhythm going.

So I can make the windows tablet a "dedicated" logos machine. Just occassionally have a chrome window open, if that will make it zippy I can discipline myself to keep the other apps closed. It's already replaced having to carry around heavy bibles and lexicons so to be a dedicated "bible resource" no problem.

Thanks for clarifying so... it is unrealistic for me to assume one of these ASus transformer 4gig ram 64 gig EMMC things as a dedicated Logos machine will run at a zippy speed right? I'm not using commentaries usually but I do use the exegetical guide (so great for finding examples of biblical text in a grammar).

It depends on the particular tablet's tech specs. Budget tablets usually use slower processors, memory, or even flash storage, so not all 8Gb / 128 gig perform the same. An similarly configured pro tablet is going to perform better than a budget tablet, because its internals run at a faster clock speed, higher bandwidth, etc.

If you want a better idea of how one tablet compares to another, you should be able to find some benchmarks or reviews online that list the pros and cons of each model.

Don't worry about asking lots of questions! It's an expensive investment, and you want a device that will perform well while you're using it to teach. Like you said, it would disrupt the flow, if you and the class had to wait while looking something up.

Based on what you have said, that isn't a good idea. You should wait until you can afford a better system, imo. This is especially true since the desktop app downloads ALL resources. Also, keep in mind, that Logos is an intensive program. It will beat up your battery, in addition to memory and storage space.

I don't know what the second hand market is like where you live but Apple have just refreshed their laptop lines so those that like the latest machines might be selling some bargains. I use a Mid 2012 11in Air to hold the stable version of Logos and for light work it runs the program better than you might expect 8GB intel 2GHz i7 256GB storage.

These are light to transport - have a great battery life and might be in your price range.

I would run Logos 'OK', but no more than that. It wouldn't be zippy and smooth.

For zippy and smooth, you'll need a minimum of 8Gb RAM, and i3 or m3 processor and an SSD (you might just get away with an eMMC). Unfortunately may tablets bump up the price significantly for 8Gb RAM (Microsoft Surface Pro, I'm looking at you).

At your budget, you're going to struggle with that spec on a tablet (although you can get laptops for that spec).

As far as I know, the only tablet that's going to be affordable is the Telecast X5 Pro. Reviews are generally positive, although support is an issue. Failing that, you need to be looking for tablets with upgradeable RAM, but they're few and far between.

PS — If you're just running Logos, and maybe Microsoft Office, you'll get away with 128Gb. You'll find that very limiting if you want to download video or install large apps though.

Its too late now, but if anyone finds this later, not all SSD's are created equal. If you can find a portable device with an M.2 drive built in, depending on the model, you can have considerably better performance!
