Dataset Updates: July 10, 2017

At some point today (Monday, July 10, 2017) the following updates to datasets should become available:

A separate update to the data behind the Lemma-in-Passage web service is also scheduled to occur sometime this week. The primary update will add Lemma-in-Passage support for Anchor Yale Bible Commentary (AYBC) and New International Commentary, Old Testament (NICOT) and New Testament (NICNT). These series use transliteration instead of actual Greek and Hebrew for original language words and terms. Supporting the lemmatization of transliteration is under development and further commentary data may also be released. Support of transliteration in for Lemma-in-Passage is to be considered as beta support and may be retracted at a future point.

I will update this thread when the update to the Lemma-in-Passage web service is live.

It appears that the first cut of the lemmatization of transliteration in commentaries has been released. Presently there are 6400+ commentaries available for Logos Bible Software (individual volumes); over 5,300 of them have either Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, or transliteration of some sort. Here's an example:

From here, one could pronounce the lemma, invoke a Bible Word Study on the lemma, invoke Power Lookup, etc. However, note that the lemma is not part of the search index of the resource, so searching the resource for the lemma will return zero hits.

The lemmatization of transliteration is constrained to the passage being commented upon. That is, transliterated terms that can be reconciled with the passage under comment will be lemmatized. So if (as in the above example) the comment is on 1 Timothy 2:3, but there are transliterations of phrases from other Bible verses or other writers in the surrounding context only transliterated words that exist in the passage under comment will be lemmatized. We don't anticipate it will be perfect, and we do anticipate some transliterations will be missed (particularly in Hebrew and Aramaic). But a vast majority of transliterations that reconcile with the current passage should be lemmatized.

This feature will probably prove most useful when the Passage Guide Lemma in Passage section is constrained to a particular commentary collection (e.g. New International Commentary on the Old and New Testament [on sale this month, July 2017], which uses transliteration exclusively):

A brief documentation resource on the Lemma in Passage dataset is forthcoming. If you happen across things that seem strange regarding the implementation (or transliterated items you'd anticipate being lemmatized, but were not), please report on this thread with examples so I can try to track things down and see how we can make this thing better.

This is wonderful news, and it's terrific work. Thank you!

It does, however, highlight some UI deficiencies with regard to scale. In particular, it can be hard to find the lemma as they're sorted by frequency, and it's even harder to find the commentaries you're interested in for the same reason (although I appreciate you can filter by collection).

I'd love to see this section updated to have an optional interface that would be similar to the word-by-word section of the passage guide, so that I could click on the lemma in context, and have the commentaries show up underneath. Ideally, a further option to display commentaries by prioritisation order would be additionally helpful.

Also, isn't it time this section showed up in the default guides? It's far more useful than many of the defaults.
