lost layout

I had to restart my computer, because it wouldn't wake up. My layout was gone, and what was there was something I had never had. I looked at the previous layouts, and there was nothing from the last month or so. I had just posed a question to the forum about an undo button, and somebody said, no problem, just reopen the layout.

What am I missing here?

Larry, sorry you are missing your layout.

I don't know that I can help but a little more information would help.

From what you've stated it appears that when you open the layouts panel you find nothing there that is recent, is this correct? (A screenshot of your layouts panel would be helpful.)
Normally Logos saves your current layout whenever you close Logos. That layout would appear in the layouts panel as Application Closed with the date and time. If you have no recent layouts in the layouts panel that would indicate that Logos either has not been used recently or there is a deeper problem. Have you been using Logos recently?
When you opened Logos what did you find that was unexpected? Logos opens to whatever you tell it to open to as determined by Tools>Program Settings>General>At Startup Open to. Please check that setting.

BTW: I suspect that when someone told you to reopen the layout they were also thinking that you would have saved the layout at some point. When you save a layout no changes will be kept the next time you open Logos unless you have chosen the option to update your layout by choosing Update Active on the layouts panel before you close Logos. The other method is to open an earlier version of your layout from the layouts panel to eliminate changes you have applied since that snapshot was taken.

Can you currently create and save a layout, close Logos, then open Logos and reopen that layout?

Normally I keep Logos open all the time. Just put the computer to sleep at night. I used to get so many downloads, I found it disruptive, so leaving the program open meant that most of this would happen when I wasn't using it.

I guess I should make it a point to save my layout every so often. I keep the same basic format, but I often have open books or guides.

The application will automatically save a copy of your layout when you exit the application. In this case, since you had to reboot the computer, it never got a chance to save the layout, so it was lost.

perhaps. But these saved layouts were old. Newest was 8 days old. Now that I am a little more aware of how things work, I will watch for this better.,

It can actually make a difference in how long it takes the application to start. When you are set to Any, the system has to do a sync before starting up in order to ensure that your last layout from some other system is retrieved before starting the application. When set to Local, it will start a sync, but will not wait for it to complete.

There are various operations that cause the system to take a snapshot. It will always take one on exit (regardless of your setting). It will do it if you use the "close all" button. I'm pretty sure there are a couple other situations, but I can't recall them.

That's a 'me too' I (pretty much) only get snapshots after a 'close all' or a restart due to a software update.

Is it that simple? I have Application Closed 'snapshots' and 'Snapshots' in my Layouts. I was wondering when those Snapshots get taken and why. I know when I switch layouts I get one. Are there other times one is created?

That's a 'me too' I (pretty much) only get snapshots after a 'close all' or a restart due to a software update.

I have some snapshots (not application closed) on my layouts menu. I think they get created when I change to another layout. I suppose that's a 'close all' in some way.

So Larry has no saved layouts so couldn't switch them. Therefore no such snapshots.

That's the bottom line. Make sure it's a named layout and you can use Update Active Layout, which I have as a shortcut.
