Accordance for Windows vs Logos 7
Hello
I let my Logos Now membership lapse and my student discount will be running out shortly.
I am not a Greek or Hebrew Scholar. I am a graduate of Luther Rice Seminary this past May with my Mdiv and hopeful of finding full time employment as an associate pastor in the future. I am 55 and living in Rhode Island and eager to move down south or really anywhere within the US where God will call my wife of 7 years and I.
All that being said (and yes please pray as I am currently unemployed and living on a 401K withdrawal) I am wondering about a couple of things.
Is buying the extended feature set in Logos worth it or would you just buy say a Bronze Baptist library set.
Having lost Logos now and only having a basic 7.0 engine I wonder about making a switch to ACCORDANCE FOR WINDOWS where the books seem so much cheaper.
Anyone point us all to a good comparison on Accordance vs Logos or share your experience or recommendations please.
Do you recommend using only Accordance going forward (imagine me dodging tomatoes sure to be figuratively flung at me in here now).

Only you can really make this assessment but here's some things to think about?
- Why do you want to buy either? Are there some particular features in the extended feature set that you want, are there some particular resources in the Baptist Bronze library that you need?
- If so, how much do they cost / are they worth to you and how do those numbers stack up against the cost of those purchases?
- Is this the best way to get access to those features / resources?
- are there other resources / features that would be more useful to you?

Is the major factor for you the cost of books or does it include things such as searchability, a digital library, making effective links between resources? (And here I'm not making any comparison between Logos and Accordance - I know nothing about the latter)
If your focus is solely on books - how would using them on Kindle or in hard copy work for you?

I want to stay up to date on Logos functionality (I was last at 6.0) and have perused the libraries on the bundles....they are really not that good to me.
So I thought maybe I should try Accordance. I mostly am looking for commentaries to research and ready future sermons.

In which case I would ensure you have the Logos 7 Basic engine - which I think you have - and look at additional features only if you need them.

As you are already using Logos and I would expect most commentaries you would need are available in that platform I would recommend staying with that and avoid having to engage with two different platforms and having resources split across them. Against that you would need to weigh the perceived cost differences for those resources you want.
What commentaries / commentary sets do you already have in Logos?

Some comments and opinions for what they're worth:
If you are primarily interested in commentaries, then the extended feature set might not be necessary.
Personally, I would advise against having Logos and Accordance together. Two platforms doing similar things create problems such as scattering of notes, duplicates, and confusion about how to carry out a similar command. This means that if you have already invested significantly in Logos resources, it could be best for you to carry on with it (I have another Bible program in which I have resources I don't have in Logos. I almost never remember to use it and don't find it convenient to switch back and forth).
Again, if it were me, I would choose features above a denominational set. Base packages are good to obtain more resources for a lesser price. But everyone benefits when resources help us find answers rather than tell us what to think. This is the reason why I recommend standard base packages over denominational ones (but I am certain many will disagree). Once one has enough good resources for the features to draw on, then these can help us do the legwork ourselves. This is good for all Christians regardless of whether they associate with a particular denomination. For instance, many users were happy to have access to Stott's writings in this month Free Book of the Month. He is Anglican and will not be included in a Baptist package.
Concerning individual features, I have a mixed experience. On the one hand, there are those that make you salivate when you look at what they can do but that you end up hardly ever using. On the other hand, we can draw an analogy to a commentary set. If you are not teaching or preaching on the minor prophets, you may not use that Haggai commentary very often. But when the day you need, you will be happy that you have it. Likewise, some of the features are handy to pull out when and as needed even if usage is spaced out in time. I guess together they constitute an arsenal that allows to carry out a variety of tasks.
Finally, it may help others to make recommendations with a view to pastoral ministry if they knew what you already have: you mentioned 6.0, did you buy past packages or bundles? If you don't have enough resources, it may well be that a package is better for you than extended features provided that the resources you'd get would be really helpful to your work and personal walk.

Thankful for free Logos 7 => Basic , Verbum 7 => Verbum Basic and free Academic Basic for Students and Scholars.
Thankful for visual filter highlighting so can "see" range of Greek verbal expression in English using Logos 7 Basic. KJV and LEB have Reverse Interlinear resources included.
Caveat: Basic "access-only" resources have no effect on dynamic pricing for future purchases.

Noticed comparison of Logos 7 and Accordance 12 => http://biblesumo.com/logos-vs-accordance-bible-software-review/ does not mention an advanced Logos search of commentaries for word(s) WITHIN a Bible Milestone (example below); review includes wiki link => Detailed Search Help that currently lacks several Advanced searching items plus does not link to Search HELP that has several Logos 6+ Advanced searching items. Also missing are comments about Logos community forum discussions.

Thanks Francis. I have had Baptist Silver 6.0 in the past. I would benefit from the Chaplains Library but it seems Logos never got that update or new package off the ground...what a shame. I have the basic 7.0 engine I think now. I have quite a few commentaries already. I was going to get the Barclay books one package offered and then read online he has trouble with the Trinity and a few other things that made me decide against that package with the Barclay books (shudder).

Also, I don't know if Accordance gives out freebies and if they do, whether it is as regular and as good quality of what we get through Logos. This must be computed in the cost of resources. This month's free book of the month is a great example: three NIVAC volumes for $4.98 altogether! I sought a couple times to add up all the freebies I have in my order history and gave up because they are so many. This includes really good quality commentaries. Beside NIVAC, I had some Sacra Pagina (yes Catholic but still very good scholarship and useful), Mentor commentaries, and other recent and quality volumes.

As an associate pastor you probably will not get many opportunities to preach. I have been preaching for over 30 years and if I could only have one commentary series for sermon prep, it would be the NIVAC- hands down. I know how hard it is to find a ministry job past the age of 50, so I will be praying for you to find a church to work with. Congrats on getting through your M-Div. program
