Notes Sort Order Problem

I made a list of about 80 Notes in a Note Document on my Desktop, then arranged those notes into a certain order (It took me about 5 days). I opened the Note Document in the Android App two days ago. This completely rearranged my Notes by default according to some "sort" setting on the Android App.

This morning I went online with my Desktop App and the sort was activated. There is no way that I can sort it according to my previous custom arrangement.

This is a setback of about 5 days hard work. If anyone knows a setting or workaround to sort according to my custom sort I would appreciate it.

I think a sort option on the menu for "None" would be great.

Pieter, I feel your pain. I don't see any solution to it that can guarantee this could never happen again. It is safer to use some of the inbuilt sorting schemes.

But if you would like to explain why you are sorting notes the way you were (or according to what criteria) perhaps users can suggest alternatives that would allow to achieve similar ends without the above problem?

Francis, I decided to change my numbering system to alphanumeric to be able to use the Title sort.

I'm running a daily devotional on WhatsApp. All 285 notes was sorted according to the series I developed. The notes are linked to specific resources to make browsing and research faster. The devotionals is then again part of my sermon series for 2018. Using notes I have a large outline. Each morning I start my WhatsApp Layout and just send the devotional for the day to followers, and start to develop the Sermon for next year.

It would be nice to use a custom order to be able to drag and drop each message in my outline. I'll think of a way to do what I want to using Favorites and Sermon Documents.

Just for future reference, the easiest way to do this is to use a number format, for example: 0001 - 9999, as the start of each Note Title. All numbers should have the same amount of digits to be able to sort according to Title. This doesn't solve the issue to drag and sort Notes, but at least if you number the final order it should stay like that.

If the sort order you are using depends on numeric sorting and it tied to specific dates (either the date of the devotional or the date of the upcoming sermon) you might find the international standard date format a helpful technique.

Pieter, it may also be relevant to what you are doing that an update to the notes system is in the works currently partially implemented in the web app with a view to implement it on the desktop as well and allow migration of existing content from the old to the new system.

I am not sure what the timetable is, but depending on how much work you intend to put in this, it may be worth taking a look at whether the web app gives you more flexibility already and/or wait for the new system to deploy your organisational scheme with a view to the longer term.

EDIT: reading in greater detail the post above, I found out that we are looking at a couple months for an early beta release and probably at least six months for a stable release.

Hopefully, the future Notes implementation will allow custom sorting that is remembered inside notebooks. I've had that problem before, fortunately with a small amount of notes.

Probably the best bet for "remembering" would be if a custom sorting order could somehow be saved (for instance, with a name) but I don't know how feasible this would be to implement technically. Otherwise even the user could accidentally click on sorting while using the panel menu for other ends and mess up hours of work.

Currently sorting and custom listing do not really co-exist. Favourites are totally ordered by custom ordering aside from the default addition of a new entry at the bottom of the list. There is no automatic sorting scheme provided for them and most of us are probably happy to have it that way as our organisation is indeed protected from accidental messes. In notes, however, while it is possible to drag notes, that ability is not even to the level of the favourites where it is possible to use folder and thus to subordinate nodes. I hope that they will include this functionality in the new note system.
