BUG: Hyperlinks Not Detected in PBB

This bug has to do with detecting hyperlinks in Personal Books.

Whenever an internal hyperlink is right next to a Microsoft Word bookmark tag, Logos fails to detect the hyperlink.

Attached is an example file. Please compile in Logos to see the results.

After enabling the visibility of bookmark tags in MS Word, notice that when a hyperlink is right next to a bookmark tag (first line example) it does not work in Logos. Adding an extra space between the bookmark tag and the hyperlink (second line example) does fix the issue.

Bookmarks & Hyperlinks

This is a big problem because often times MS Word bookmarks and hyperlinks are used as footnotes, thus after importing a PB the footnotes are broken.

It is clearly a bug with the Logos PBB, and should be a quick fix.

I have spoken with a Logos level two technician (Christian) regarding this issue, who directed me to this forum, and said that one of the developers will be able to fix the issue.

Please let me know any way that I could be of further assistance in fixing this issue.

Thank you,

Vadim

Are there any developers readings this?

    Please confirm the bug.

    Can someone please confirm this?

It is quite disappointing that after several emails and two phone calls with Logos, the solution offered is to post the bug on the Form (with a promise of a quick fix).

Could you do an advanced find and replace in your word document to add the space?

    Hello Philip,

I do not think it is possible to search for bookmarks in MS Word.

One would expect that a respectable software company like Logos, after receiving a bug report, would confirm it, debug it, and soon fix it.

Especially, when it is something so simple.

There are different levels of bugs... not all bugs are created equal. I am working with Apple right now on a bug, but I don't know if it will be fixed "soon." I hope your bug is fixed soon, but it isn't "mission critical."

What is more disconcerting, however, is this:

The forums aren't really a place for employees to provide help (although they do from time to time). I HATE hearing of tech support blowing off customers instead of doing their job. They may not have the answer. That is not what upsets me. They should find someone who does and get back with you. If it takes longer than expected, they should call to give you an update... even if the update is "we are still working on it."

Apperany the tech support team has no way of contacting the developers (at least that is what I was told), so they send you here to report problems that they can't fix. Very unprofessional, and irresponsible, I must say.

    Hi Vadim,

I'm not sure why you were sent here to report anything. I'm sorry that happened. I'm going to email you to get a couple of things from you and submit them to development.

Is it just me, or does the attached Personal Book not build at all now with version 7.10 (mac)?

The Release Notes do not mention anything about fixing PBB.

It looks like it is happening with other documents as well... Please fix.

Hope FL takes a look at this soon.  This functionality used to work.  I am seeing similar errors as Vadim.

And these were old PB's that I am re-compiling (moving stuff over to my data disk after installing SSD).

    Robert,

I think Faithlife explained elsewhere that they deliberately made this Warning/Error breaking the PB build because of some (must be very rare) issues with these PBs - it affects the rebuild of PBs for many users, including myself. This was not in response to a bug discussed in beta and I think it wasn't announced anywhere either, so it comes as a surprise for many. I wish they could revert to the prior handling.

However, for the time being it means to clear up the source file, e.g. using the outline view in Word, showing non-printable characters and checking for the paragraph mark alone in a row and deleting those. An automated way to do this would to search for ^p^p replacing all with ^p - this will get rid of them, but may break headings and other styles, so use with caution.

    Hope this helps a bit,

    Mick

    Mick,

The process you describe does not work with footnotes.

Is there a plan to "revert" or this permanent?

Faithlife would need to answer on any plans to revert to prior behavior.

One workaround I tested today was a replace all in Word of "^p" with " ^p" (i.e. every paragraph mark will be replaced by space/blank plus the same paragraph mark - don't type the quote marks). This should not break any formatting and I don't see any issues with footnotes - otherwise please post a document that won't compile and I'll have a try at it.

The issue with the hyperlinks in PB is yet to be resolved.

It almost seems like the developers are intentionally avoiding fixing issues with PBB.

Looking over the Forum, other BUGs are being dealt with much quicker.

    Hum. A good idea.

I have always managed to solve it (so far - touch wood) by accessing the Navigation Pane, expanding it,  and reformatting any blank lines (which were caused by lone paragraph marks formatted with a heading style) with the "Normal" style.  Thanks very much for the suggestion though, it is bound to come in use some time! I had used something similar when tidying up a converted Kindle file from all the accompanying rubbish but I had not transferred the method.

I found this post because I had the same problem with A_UNKNOWN. After reading all the responses, I found a lone section ending marker in word with a heading 1 paragraph mark after that. Once I deleted those, the problem was solved. I do want to add, in case it helps anyone who reads this, that the section marker was the result of a master-document with about 20 subdocuments, all individual word files. I turned that into a "complete" document and unlinked all the subdocuments, and in the process there must have been this final section marker that wasn't deleted. I have never had this bug before in Logos, but now at least I know what a likely solution is.

I have been pulling my hair out over this issue...until I found this thread! Thanks so much. The search ("^p" with " ^p") and the Navigation Pane were extremely helpful in correcting this issue.

To this day, compiling personal books which use hyperlinks for footnotes is a hit-and-miss. While the hyperlinks always work in Word, Logos often does not detect them, hence footnotes don't work. Could we please address this??
