Getting Past Login with no Internet

This past weekend my phone wouldn't let me open any books on my android phone when I was without internet.

So here's what happened:

I went to a youth Bible Quiz event with only my Bible (i.e. no Nestle-Aland) assuming the Logos App would be my friend if deeper questions arose! But, when I got to the church my mobile app on Android didn't work as I anticipated...

1.) I opened the app and read the text in the version that was already opened last time... all good so far!

2.) Since the second version I had open was for an Old Testament passage (BHW) and I needed NA28 for New Testament, I clicked on Library to pull up NA28 (I have it downloaded to my phone's memory card).

3.) It popped up a login splash-screen and asked me to login to proceed. I tried, but alas, it wouldn't validate my login without internet (which was not to be found in this remote locale).

4.) I tried closing/opening the app, rebooting, etc. to no avail.

5.) Eventually, I went to another location during lunch that had signal and I was able to get the text needed.

6.) So, I assumed this feature no longer worked offline as I remembered. But then, when I got home and had time to tinker with it, I put my phone on airplane mode and everything worked as expected.

Any thoughts on why it wouldn't work there?

As far as I know, you can't get past the login screen on mobile while offline. There might be a way for them to code this up so that it works like the desktop (i.e. work in offline mode), but I don't think it allows this currently.

This is typically not a problem when it stays logged in, which is usually does for long periods of time. However I have noticed that I have had to log in again two times recently. For me it's a little bit of a pain because I don't know my password...I keep it in a password vault and it takes some effort to get it to the mobile app. So it can be a jarring surprise to need to go through that process.

When the app updated in the past, I recall being presented with the login screen, but the app would immediately log itself in and go back to working. Perhaps I'm reading it wrong, but it seems like we've lost this functionality in the last couple of updates. Can this be looked into? I have a feeling that would mitigate the type of problem that ChrisG is running into (background update, going somewhere without internet, open the app to be presented a login challenge).

No other Bible app is like this. They keep your account open--always. Getting booted out of a logged-in account on multiple occasions ranges from mildly-inconvenient in my case to completely broken in a case like ChrisG.

I had the same thing happen to me two times in the last week or two. I'm reasonably confident something was going on with the Logos/Faithlife infrastructure.

The first time it happened, I force-closed the app, disabled wifi, re-launched the app, and was able to work offline. Some time later, with wifi enabled, the app worked normally. The second time it happened, I went to the effort of finding my password and entering it. The app then did a library update and index, which took a few minutes.

I would like FL to comment on why we got those login prompts for no apparent reason.

No. I was saying I experienced the same anomaly as William Gabriel, that for still-unexplained reasons I was prompted with the login screen when I ran the Bible app. I was online, and the app knew I was online. This happened two times within the last couple of weeks. This is on my iPad that I've had the app on for years, without getting prompted. In my previous post, I explained the workaround I used the first time it happened (because I didn't have my password handy and didn't want to fire up my password manager).

The question I'd like FL to answer is what is the likely reason the app asked me to sign in?

Yes. Several days afterward, during which time I had run the app without being asked for credentials.

I found the same problem recently. looks like it happens when you have a WiFi connection available but no internet. I turn off WiFi when this happens and then open the app. Works fine then.

Thanks! I will give that a try next time I run into it. I usually have internet, so it rarely happens. And, I now I try and guess what two books would be best to have open when I go to a remote location. (e.g. we plan to read in Acts so I close an OT commentary and open NA28) As long as the book is open, all seems to be well. But, when I ask for another book it gives me the login requirement. It essentially means you only have a maximum of two resources to use that day.
