Why not put in a modest bid today

I propose an experiment - assuming you can afford it and that you are at least vaguely interested in the title -please consider at least making the minimum bid of $2. Obviously bid more if you'd like but at the very least bid the minimum. There are now over 18,000 members in this forum (that's about a 3000 person increase in less than a month) - could we find 1000 people to bid at least $2 on this title? If my guestimate is correct then that would be enough or pretty close to getting the graph to 100% at the lowest point.

I'm basing this on pure speculation (one small comment from Bob regarding the average number of participants in any particular community pricing title) but what's the worse thing that can happen? - You get a Logos book for $2 or it doesn't make it to 100% and you can either consider raising your bid or not bothering.

While you're on the Community Pricing page why not put some bids (again, at least the minimum) on some of the other titles.

So, I don't know enough about this title to be excited to bid anything much - but it at least sounds interesting enough to pay $2 for - so there you go that's one bid so far.

Interesting thought! Another way to think about it, if "everybody" bid $2 for every community book that came out, even if I bought a book for $2 that I didn't really want that much, the process ensured it was a type of investment to ensure the books I do want I can get for $2 also!

It is interesting that you are proposing this at the same time I officially started the "Maximum Bid Club." I have no problems with you biding only $2 for this work IF that is the maximum you are willing to pay for it, but I do ask you to ask yourself this question: "If this resource crossed the production line at $4 would you raise your bid?" What about $6? How about $8?

I understand want you are trying to accomplish, but I think we all need to bid the maximum we realistically would bid the very first time. For me it is indeed the maximum possible bid. Yes I realize doing this is a bit of a game, because there is no realistic possibility any Community Pricing resource would ever go into production at this high of a price, but it is fun and satisfying to see the huge gap between what I bid and the final price. More importantly, I think this strategy has a greater chance of impacting Community Pricing. As Bob pointed out in an email it only takes 300 people to bid on a work to move it over the line. If only 100 people joined the Maximum Bid Club the impact on Community Pricing could be huge.

I have read The Life of God in the Soul of Man and can assure you that that book alone is worth the maximum bid price. Scougal does an incredible job or helping the reader realize the utmost practicality, importance, and joy of seeking above all communion with God. You will assuredly love God more after reading that book and at the same time pray that God would grant your heart even more love and devotion for Him. Incredible. I'd love to read more of Scougal and would gladly pay maximum price. I'm excited, however, that I might get to pay less to have him in Logos.

Let's get this one published quickly!

Agreed. I guess what I'm saying is at least bid something - but if you would be happy paying more for the title - bid more - go max - like you say the risk of actually paying that amount is low - although there is a small danger that you might trigger the 100% line too high which puts off the "last weekers", etc.

The idea behind my strategy is for people to at least bid the minimum - kind of as an expression of interest - then it becomes fairly simple to extrapolate what the magic minimum bid amount would be to get to 100% - for instance based on the level of the graph at $2 there has currently not been enough bids for it to get to 100% even if all those people raised their bid to $18. However, if the $2 level got to 20% then the book could be produced if everyone bid at least $10.

Agreed. That is generally what I do - however I will periodically reevaluate.

I picked up on that comment too - however to be accurate what he said was that 300 is the average - so it can't be taken as a hard and fast rule. But it is what I used to calculate (in conjuction with the current pricing for Hugh Martin's book - which is of similar size) for Henry Scougal to go into production at $2 we would need about 1000 bidders - are there are 1000 people on these forums that would pay at least $2 for this book? - one might suspect so if we promoted it enough.

I agree that it is well worth pursuing both strategies. In time if we can get enough people to just bid $2 it at least gets them thinking about the value of Community Pricing and participating in the process. These people will be prime candidates for that final week when the price plummets as people either raise their bids or bid for the very first time.

If you are correct in your estimates that it only takes $200 worth of bids to get a work like Henry Scougal into production, then only 112 members of the Maximum Bid Club would be needed to get to $2000. I really think it will be easier to get 100 to 150 people who are committed to always biding the maximum than it will be to get 1000 to always bid the minimum. To be honest with you I would just love it if 1000 did commit to always biding the lowest amount. The nice thing about bidding the maximum amount is that I have also bid the lowest amount. [:)]

Either way, I think we're all in agreement that the more we can do to encourage participation the greater the mutual benefit for everyone. And like you say if you are a member of the bid max club then you get membership in the "at least bid something" club thrown in for free.
