A simple task or no? (Library filter results in canonical order)

I would like to be able to insert a filter in my library (I'm using mytag:) and then sort the results in canonical order.

I can't figure out how to do that, and it seems it should be a simple task.

My Print/Export shows a message that "This Panel Supports Export Only." I can export to Word or Excel, but don't know how to make them sort in canonical order without inputting extra metadata (which I'm trying to avoid).

I can't sort in any of the views I can find in the library, and I don't have an option to save as a collection.

What am I missing?

Mytag creates a collection for each tag plus can add metadata: e.g. numeric canonical prefix. Logos wiki has => Canonical Commentary Collections

Another option is filtering for a canonical book so can export to Excel where can add a column for numerical sorting.

I've been doing that; it is a pain and is what I'm trying to avoid.

I know I can skip the Library and go to the Collections tool and make a collection using mytag from there. I was hoping to do that from the Library (that would make the most sense, it seems).

But the problem is, the Sort tool in collections only sorts alphabetically. I want to sort in canon order.

This isn't (or at least, doesn't look like) what I'm wanting. This finds copies of books about a canonical book. I can do that simpler than those rules, even. I want to find books about a canonical book that I've specified with a particular tag and print/export them in canonical order.

Am I making sense yet? I'm not sure a better way to ask.

Since there is no canonical order built into the metadata, you need to supply it, by making that particular tag sortable - e.g. using the bible book numbers that the canonical commentary collections use - or any other sort order you wish to apply (canonical order may differ in details among denominations), so you would not be tagging the books you want to see from on top not with a mytag:Genesis but with a mytag:01-Genesis or something like that, and so all the way down.

Doc, I can see you haven't been reading your Logos Policies Manual.

Under section 2.21 - Library (as Barney Fife can so easily quote):

- Do not provide the user with a resource purchase date (ignore all user begging)

- Do not provide a sortable canon sequence number

- Title any canon-based resources to prohibit canon sorting. Inconsistency is best.

- Mindlessly re-sort the library each time a user attempts to re-title a resource in canon sequence.

Clicking the mytag column header will group the filtered library into your tags in alphabetical order. Right click on any of those mytags and "Expand all" will then show the sorted list.

However, since - as you already wrote in the OP - the library only supports export, not print, you'll have the list in Excel where you can sort very comfortably or even build a pivot table if you wish.

[Edit] OK, I see how that works...sorts by group. It will put things in order, but is a bit messy with all the group titles that get output. I suppose Excel can clean it up, with a little extra work.

I can use this for now, as it is better than manual input into Excel of canonical numbers, but still isn't as clean as I'd like (see Denise's post above for elucidation).

Sorting tags in alphabetic order causes 01 to be sorted before others (regardless of place in list of tags for a resource). Sorting library by Subject shows similar effect. Subject metadata of Minor Prophets can include canonical book names. Sorting Subject has Minor Prophets in alphabetic order instead of canonical.

Canonical collection names are an example of one canon sort order, which reflects the internal book number used by Logos. Tanakh has a different canonical order than Protestant. For many resources, metadata allows Simple Canonical Collection Rules to be useful.

Complex rules also have canonical mytag that begins with C (for Commentary), ## (numeric order for sorting), and a Book abbreviation.

Complex Canonical Collection Rules include by Title resources that have Bible Milestone(s) for that canonical book, which lack corresponding metadata. For example, the monograph "D. A. Carson Sermon Library" has Bible Milestones in a number of canonical books while lacking in others.
