Extremely Frustrated

I am starting to work through NT176 The Gospel Message in the Early Church and I'm finding it very frustrating.

In the Suggested Reading and See Also sections of the first three segments I have numerous links to locked resources. I did some research and found that to unlock those resources would cost me $321.88 just to take full advantage of a free mobile course. Not sure yet what locked resources the other 19 segments will need.

I own Logos 7 Silver plus lots of individual Logos resources I've accumulated over the last 22 years. In total over 2700 resources and I still can't take full advantage of the free course. Very aggravating and frustrating.

I didn't feel so great this morning so I stayed home from church, listened to hymns and decided to do some studying and this is what happened. Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm curious as to what the most common package is? And courses should be targeted to that package (it may be Platinum). But Platinum is out of my reach as a layman. If I was a full time pastor with a budget for study and books then maybe but I will never get there. Gol afford.d plus some targeted o are the farthest I will ever be able to go.

Even if you don't like the courses tool, or find its sorting of resources wrong, or wold like to add your own checkmarks on resources you may have in paper or in some other substandard bible software: Every course has its Faithlife group which shares an Excel spreadsheet with all resources mentioned: https://faithlife.com/nt176/documents/11970 (obviously, you need to follow the group to have access)
Lastly: The resources are just suggested for further reading. They are not regarded as "needed" or required reading. Their content will not be tested in quizzes and the course speakers will not interact with those resources. Thus, they are not "needed" in the same way as required reading in a course where you get academic credit for. In some cases, several resources may be listed as recommended reading which will bring across roughly the same information, thus accommodating users that may own one resource, but not the other.

Moreover, NT176 is a multi-speaker course, thus very unlike most other mobile Ed courses. In most courses I have seen, the free LBD and FSB plus one or two other resources (such as a core resource authored by the speaker, or two very relevant bible commentaries or topical monographs) make for the bulk of recommended reading in a course. Those who are mentioned more than say ten or a dozen times couId be regarded as in a certain sense "needed". It is very rare to see such a long list of resources, and it is simply not fair to assume one could not benefit from a course without owning all resources that are referenced only once or twice.

Sorry about the sticker shock. Unlocking resources are a hidden cost of Mobile Ed courses, even if you owned a larger library. (FL used to recommend Platinum on their Mobile Ed product pages, but you'd still be missing at least 21 resources for NT176 that aren't included in Platinum.)

If you look at the plan details for the course, you'll see that many of those linked resources are only referred to once. You'd probably end up only reading a short passage from the entire resource. Unless the resource is something you're interested in for other reasons, it's probably not worth buying every resource.

What you could do is use a Factbook or Topic search to see what other resources discuss the topics covered in the course. It's a bit more work, but you could still learn from other content that you do own. (Some of the newer courses actually have you do this in the Activities.)

Regardless of the cost, I'm very thankful for the courses that FL makes available to us. For me, it's opened up opportunities to learn from scholars at many different seminaries which I wouldn't be able to afford to attend.

I am happy to use my #2 Christian electronic book provider for some readings. There are hits into material I have owned for years. This is only a partial solution.

I am a layman as well, Marshall. I buy a few courses, knowing I will be short ''hits.'' I find that if courses are in an area I read in a lot, I have a greater % of the hits.

Baker Enc. of the Bible is one expense the courses hit a lot, but I do not own. Oh, well.

I simply opened the course link in the email I received for the 7 Day Challenge. Using that approach you don't see the resource list (or at least I don't). If I use the Tools/Courses path I get the list like you showed.

That will help a lot with the frustration but not the cost. If the resource is only referenced once then I guess I can jsut skip unlocking it and only concentrate of the resources with higher link counts.

Early church history and thinking fascinates me and I'm slowly adding resources for that era. Using the Tools/Courses approach that Mick outlined I can now target my unlocks to fit in with my area of interest.

I had a 6th grade teacher back in the '60s that turned me on to archeology and that interest has stayed with me all these years. It now manifests itself in my focus on Paul's church planting work and the early church history.

I too am thankful and I have taken advantage of the Christmas deals over the last 20+ years. That is why my library is so eclectic.

I'm about 80% thankful and 20% frustrated. Being unemployed does't leave much money to spend on Logos though I have lots of time to use it. But God has really blessed us over the course of my unemployment. Know anyone that wants to hire a 61 year old software developer?

I still remain mystified at video course people (no offense). In college, I nearly died with lectures. I skipped all my math lectures in college and high math is my main professional tool of choice.

I get a book, start reading. Instantly the author is discussing a book I don't have. I don't get excited. One right now just can't let go of criticizing Jerome-Murphy, but ok.

I know many who really like videos, so obviously it's personal preference. But expecting side-reads. Hmmm.

The age old dilemma. Study requires time, money and energy. The problem is that few of us have all three [:)]. Teenagers and young adults have time and energy, but little money. Parents rarely have time, money or energy, unless their job involves study. The unemployed have time and energy, but no money. And retirees have time and sometimes money, but often little energy, unless they've managed to retire early. That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to heaven so much — time, riches and energy in abundance! (And, ironically, no need for Logos Bible Software!!)

It said I needed Platinum. So, I buy video courses in a clear-eyed manner, knowing I may be short many resources, but accepting same. Utilizing birthday, Christmas money, I can buy them. Over time, I can overtake.

I never view them. I do not want to hear them. Read only......Y buy??? I have a course in my home. And I do not have to meet any prof's standards, as I take no quizzes nor exams. My way is the highway I take to greater knowledge.

In my experience, the Mobile Ed videos introduce content, but 90% of the practical education comes from readings. There's so much in the books that the instructor can't present (especially in a 6-minute video).

I'd be interested in that approach. Assuming dynamic pricing I'd just look at the total cost of the course including additional resources and budget accordingly. I think they'd also need to differentiate between the required and optional resources. I agree with Denise that much of the value of any course is locked away in the readings so I always purchase them. Unfortunately sometimes that means making non-Logos purchases because I have encountered courses that reference materials no available in the format. Jean Vanier being the most recent example I've encountered.

As NB.Mick pointed out, the list of books are available (either in the Courses tool, or the course's Faithlife group).

The only other place that FL could add the list would be on a course's product page.

I'd also like to see the list be made available much sooner for pre-pub courses, so we can buy necessary books when they are on sale well before the course ships. It's frustrating to find out after the fact that a course needed a book which recently had been on sale.

Since I started tis thread yesterday morning, I have been playing with this and delving deeper.

Using the spreadsheet from the FaithLife group you can easily sort on # of links column to see how important a resource is to the course.

Using Tools/Courses you can see which suggested resources you own. But you can't sort the resources by the number of links. Still, scrolling down the list and looking at the # of links isn't to difficult.

Using the combination of the two really helps. For example I found that I would need to add approximately 30 resources to cover everything in NT176 but only need 18 new resources to cover ones with multiple links and the ones with the highest number of links are already in my library.

Two suggestions.

1. an easy way to add the missing resources to my wish list. You can do a quick buy already but I can't always afford that path.

2. Since you can already see a preview of the text for the missing resource it would be nice if the resource would show the text from the link. This would benefit the course taker but still not allow the preview to be so useful that no one would purchase it.

Thanks for weighing in, everyone. The reading links in Mobile Ed courses are a great feature, but we realize that they can also be a source of frustration to people when they encounter a lot of locked resources. Because of that it’s probably worth highlighting our intention with these links.

Our intention with Mobile Ed course readings is to provide people who are taking a course with the opportunity to dig deeper into a topic if they want to. We do this by providing links to A) the most useful/relevant books for a course and books that widely owned so that most users can explore at least some readings without additional purchases. In the past we have used the Platinum base package as a baseline for choosing some of the resources, but since the resources included in Platinum change with each new edition we have stopped prioritizing that as such.

Since the content in Mobile Ed courses is broken down into focused 5–10 minute segments and since we try to provide some links for each segment, each course ends up having a lot of reading links. We don’t necessarily intend for people to purchase each and every resource linked to in a course. They aren’t “required” parts of the course, and since we try to provide links to a variety of useful resources in Logos there may be several resources that are only linked to once or twice in a course. We provide these links not because we expect people to purchase every book linked to from the course, but because we want help ensure that people have access to at least some readings in their current Logos library. We also provide links to related Logos guides and tools like the Passage Guide or Factbook. These links will draw from resources you own, so you can use them explore the topic in whatever library you have.

Each course is different depending on the type of course and the content, but typically a course will have a handful of very useful or relevant resources that are linked to frequently. These would be the ones we would recommend purchasing. As pointed out above, you can find this information in each course’s Faithlife group. It may be helpful to think of these frequently used books as the books that a professor in a traditional college or seminary class would recommend as primary texts in his or her syllabus. Professors often also provide a long bibliography of helpful resources related to the class topic. He or she wouldn’t expect the student to buy all those books or even track each one down in the library, but they are listed for reference if a student wants to dig deeper into a specific topic from the course.

We are working on providing different options for people to purchase various bundles of referenced books for individual Mobile Ed courses. We hope to roll that out next year.

We generate the spreadsheet list of the resources and the number of times they are linked to when we begin doing the preliminary build of the course. This happens toward the end of our production process. We usually have created the course Faithlife group and shared the spreadsheet in it before we set a ship date, so if you pre-order a course you can check the list of resources it links to when you get the ship date email.

We generate the spreadsheet list of the resources and the number of times they are linked to when we begin doing the preliminary build of the course. This happens toward the end of our production process.

As you described, the full list (with link count) is generally only available about a month before the course ships.

I think some of us would be interested in hearing sooner about the much smaller "handful of very useful or relevant resources that are linked to frequently," "the books that a professor in a traditional college or seminary class would recommend as primary texts."

Surely this would be a win for FL, as it not only would bring in revenue in advance of the course shipping, but also increase the likelihood of someone not cancelling a pre-pub that they've already purchased resources for.

We wouldn't need link counts, merely a simple heads up early on so we can keep an eye out for sales on those primary texts in the months before the course ships.

A few minutes ago I received and email with a subject of "Last chance to save! Mobile Ed: NT326 Book Study: The Acts of the Apostles"

I followed the Learn More button in the email and that Logos web page doesn't list any resources for the course.

Not a big deal for me as I can't afford this course anytime soon. But I can see how it could aggravate others. But then maybe I am just missing something and the resource list can be found somewhere else.
