A13a- indexing does not finish

I downloaded and installed L4 and it added my new resources and began indexing... 3 days ago. The time to complete fluctuates but always stays above 80 hours. It is also consuming virtually all the processing power my computer has. Anyone have any suggestions? Attached are my log files (I hope i did this right :->).

The first index takes a long time. The estimation numbers are off initially. The best thing to do is to leave it plugged in overnight and check on it in the morning.

This is normal. Indexing is very CPU and memory intensive task. As you know you can pause indexing if you need to and resume when you have time to leave the computer idle.

The only suggestion I have is that you should really just let it finish. Also, if you have 2GB or less of RAM, that might slow things down a bit.

I don't see anything wrong in your logs.

Thanks for looking, I am now at 4 days on the indexing and the time is now at 100 hours, are you saying that it could be expected for the indexing to take up to a week? It only took 12 hours on my laptop total and I am running the same library. Thanks again...

No. It shouldn't take days. How much ram do you have? What kind of Mac are you indexing on?

I am using an iMac with a 2 GHz processor and 1 gig ram running OSX 10.5.8 (latest update to Leopard).

I have the same problem!! The dang indexing won't even get off the ground, it started at 51 hours left yesterday morning. 36 hours later, it says it has 68 hours to go.

If you open Activity Monitor and click on "System Memory", are you out of free RAM? That will seriously slow down indexing.

Also, if you post your logs, it will be helpful to figure out where it might be getting stuck.

1 GB of RAM is most likely the problem. Indexing requires a lot of memory to complete and if you run out of free space, it will take much much longer, since it has to swap a lot of data from main memory to the disk to keep running.

I paused the indexing and was working on the computer when a minor update downloaded. Without thinking I installed and restarted the computer. When it came back up the indexing icon was back and it promptly jumped up to 6 hours remaining but at that point the time decreased properly until it finished. it is almost like it got hung up in the process. I have not had it try to index again and everything seems to be working fine so I am going to assume that things are resolved unless I get a reason to think otherwise :->. Thanks for the help.

I found out sth else that caused the indexing go on forever in my new laptop: the automatic "sleep" or "hibernation" mode. Those two caused indexing to restart every 10 minutes w/o me doing anything. We need to stop that automatic "sleep" or "hibernation" mode.

Try a little applet called Caffeine you can download it at http://www.lightheadsw.com/

You can turn it on and off at will and it will override your Sleep presets. I use it all the time.

On my iMac, changed Energy Saver in System Preferences many moons ago:

Since computer does not sleep, Logos 4 indexing can run overnight (yet display can sleep - turns off compact fluorescent lift).
