Personal Book Builder (PBB) Error - unable to fix

Hi!  First thing to note is that I have searched the wiki looking for a solution, to no avail.  My issue is one that I've seen others post up.  I've got a Word Doc that I used when working through Zephaniah in my personal study & I went to upload it into Logos - as I've done with others .docx files that use a similar formatting style.  The PBB failed to create...here is the data from the log file - I've underlined / bolded the error that I believe is causing the whole thing to fail:

Things I've tried that have not worked:

1) Searching for a blank heading per this suggestion:

https://wiki.logos.com/PB_%E2%80%93_Warnings_$26_Errors#Blank_heading_converted_to_Normal_style

2) Doing a find / replace for ^p^p & replacing all with ^p

3) Doing a find / replace for ^p & replacing all with ^p

Here is a screen shot of the Navigation Pane which shows no blank headings.

    3) Doing a find / replace for ^p & replacing all with ^p

Try a find/replace where you search for "^p" and replace with " ^p" - put a space BEFORE the ^p.

Tried that & it didn't work.  It said it made 872 replacements. But I still get the same log file warnings & errors.  Sigh...

The only advice I have is to split the book in two to find the problem, and then keep on doing this to the "problem" section. In general this will either get you to a page where when you look close, the problem will be obvious, or a small section where you can't see the problem, but can re-key without too much of a problem....

Try repeating the search/replaces until it doesn't replace any. If you have multiple empty paragraphs in a row, the search/replace will still leave some behind.

After spending a couple hours using the above replacement ^p to resolve issue- just plain gave up.

I had to clear formatting on the whole document and now will spend hours reformatting- thanks for nothing FL.

Whyndell, if you have saved a copy of the formatted document, send it my way and I'll see if I can figure something out. No promises; this isn't my area but I'm happy to give it a look. rick at faith life dot com.

(Edit: David, feel free to send along your doc as well if you'd like me to peek at it)

For those following the thread, generally, I'd recommend turning on visible formatting (the little pilcrow button in MSWord) which makes the paragraph marks visible.

My *guess* is that there is an empty paragraph with a heading style, where "empty" may also mean "white space only" (so spaces, tabs, etc.).

Please report back to this thread Rick, whatever you find - or don't find for that matter!

I don't think that I will be the only one hoping that your "guess" is correct!!

    @Rick - you're a genius!

I clicked the "pilcrow" (new term for me) button & very quickly found an empty paragraph with a heading style!  Fortunately for me it was page 3 of 44 pages!  So it didn't take long to find.

Once I corrected it (i.e. set the paragraph style to "normal"), then I was immediately able to upload / build the book within Logos.

    THANK YOU! [Y]

    Hi Whyndell.

I have a few meetings over the next few hours, but will hopefully be able to give your document a look later this afternoon.

    Hi Whyndell.

I did get a version to build.

    Here's what I did:

    • Got rid of all the extra spaces that were in there (based on the previous recommendation). To do that, I searched for two spaces and replaced with one space. I did that until I couldn't do it any more. Then I searched for " ^p" (space before a paragraph) and replaced it with "^p".
    • Switched to outline view (View -> Outline). This is great because it uses your existing Heading styles to create an outline, and you can start to see where some problems in the outline might be. I'm pretty sure the section breaks near some headings obscured the empty heading paragraphs that were being reported in the PBB Log.
    • Look for stuff like the below. See the (-) symbol? That's an empty heading of some sort that is caught up in the mix. It needs to be deleted. I found two of them in the document you uploaded; these were the areas that were creating the Unknown Article errors.

The file that I compiled is attached below. If you have further issues, feel free to follow up on this thread.

    the SSA series

May I ask what is this series?

A Semantic and Structural Analysis by SIL- I have the series and for years now been converting it into PBB, and one time thought Logos was going to make it available. This series is not only a good resource but just the using it helps train you.

+ Wyndell:  Thank you for your reply.  This product should be in Logos.  I took a peek at your entry above + it is awesome.  + not in Greek, which helps me, as I know none, being a layman.  Yet the website said they work on the Greek text.

  • Whyndell Grizzard
Whyndell Grizzard Member Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭

Yes they use the Greek for the purpose that these are mostly for translating into other languages and give the tools to work with the semantics involved- but do not let that deter you most if not all in this series are extremely profitable to the pastor and layman.

I learned 90% of my Greek self taught- with the help of many resources- I'm no scholar but I can follow along with translators and commentaries that use it- and that is where most pastor and layman teachers are at.

I know how to stay out of trouble, and have very learned men in the languages I can seek advise and help from
