Every time I open L4 since the last update the indexer starts and then crashes after a few minutes.

Your index needs to be rebuilt. Just type "rebuild index" into the command box.
Same problem, starting at the same time. It might not be "just" that simple, Peter. I've tried "rebuild index," to no avail. It still continued to abandon the indexing each time.
I'm currently working with Kevin's proposal, and I deleted everything in the LibraryIndex folder. I'm quite a few hours into indexing now, with no problems yet. But I won't know for sure until tomorrow morning !
MacBook, Parallels 5 with XP.
Tom, I can't say for sure without seeing your log, but deleting the LibraryIndex folder was going to be my next suggestion. Another common problem that causes repeated indexer failures is running low on disk space.
Tom, what was Kevin's proposal? I have the same problem!
Thanks a lot, Tom!
Peter, I have the same problem. Could you explain to me how I can delete my Library Index folder? I'm having the same problem as Tom has.
Thanks a lot, Peter!

The LibraryIndex folder is found in \Logos4\uniquefolder.xxx\. The path to the Logos4 folder depends on your Windows version. In Window 7 or Vista it would be C:\Users\username\AppData\Local. In Windows XP it would be C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data.
Thanks so much Melissa!
Deleting the LibraryIndex contents and re-indexing took care of it. Thanks!
Hi,
I have the last Logos 4 update and all apeared well for me. But now, I appear to have the same problem since a new book file of about 100 mb.was added to my library after that latest update. Since that book file was uploaded I now get a Microsoft windows box stating: "Logos 4 Software indexer has stopped working." I get this every time I open Logos 4 on the computer. My operating system is Vista Premium 64. I have plenty of disk space. I have tried to find the Library index folder in order to delete it. Before I do that I want to make sure I should be deleting it and if I do that I am deleting the proper folder. I tried to follow the suggested path and after much experimenting this is what I did find doing the following: C:\Users\owner\AppData\Local\Logos 4\Data\te5hftex.fwz\Library Index. Is this the "Library Index" that I should delete? The file is something like 1.86 GB and I don't want to mess things up deleting something that I shouldn't way up there in the "guts" of my system. If this is the proper folder to delete, and I do delete it, then what do I do? Do I then ask Logos to rebuild my index? Thanks much for your help.
Phil
Good morning all, from France. Sorry to say that deleting the contents of the Library Index folder did not work either. It ran all night, but then stopped this morning with about 25 minutes to go, same MS error box.
I've finally figured out how to enable logging using the Java script, so I'll give it another try and then send the log. I want to be kind here, but the extent of this problem in the forums seems to indicate that it originated with the recent download, and I'm sure many logs have already been sent back in. Has anyone been able to figure out what happened?

You did find the Library Index folder. If you delete the contents you won't break Logos. When Logos 4 starts up next time it will see that its index is gone and start building a new one automatically.
I have the same problem. My indexer has been crashing for a week or more. I have tried the rebuild, deleting the contents of the index folder and I have sent the logs in to the tech support. I have not gotten any response and just found this forum. Any more suggestions?
I am running XP on an HP Elitebook 6930p with 2 GB RAM, 150 Gig hard drive with 100 G free space.
I have tried the rebuild, deleting the contents of the index folder
This is the first time I have heard that deleting the content of the index folder did not provide the solution. Did you close L4 and then delete the context and then start L4 again?
I would suggest loading up your log files here to this forum. There are a few people who would look at it and help you through this issue.
I believe it was closed, but I am trying again in case it was not.
John
If this does not get resolved and no one follows up on your log, I would suggest re-posting your question and log in a new thread. I am not an expert on the logs but I know that there are some here very willing to help so I would expect help to come from the forum soon.
John, in the same folder as your Logos 4 logs there should be an indexer log. The log you provided is for the main program and had no errors in it.
Thank you. I tried deleting the index files folder again and it seems to have worked. I will return if it does it again. I appreciate the help.
Thanks, guys, for the help. I was having the same problem, with constant indexing, that never finished. So, yesterday I was able to delete the index folder and then rebuilt the index, leaving my poor laptop to work overnight. With fear and trembling, I started L4 this morning, and Volia, no indexing!!!! ...and L4 opened so quickly!!!! Yahoo!
Thanks again for the tips.
Thanks Kevin and all,
My indexer woes seem to have been sorted by deleting the library index and letting Logos 4 build a new one. That was almost too easy to work!
Strange, I deleted the library index and it still crashed with 25 minutes left. But I restarted L4 without deleting the library index, but this time with logging enabled... I figured I catch 'em red-handed this time and send it to Kevin! It went through almost another 12 hrs of indexing, and successfully [:D] ! A two-step process... sort of like the blind man who saw men like trees walking ? (can you hear Johnny Cash singing?)
It worked! Thanks.
I also had my index crash after a recent download. Fortunately, the "Rebuild Index" command fixed the problem.
I vote for Melissa as one of the most specific and useful staff forum posters :-)
Thank you! (for this and all the other posts)

I had to use the pause indexing when Logos 4 first started, and then "rebuild index" command. I had tried rebuild command before, but it did not work. After restarting my system I brought up Logos for and as soon as it started indexing I paused it, gave rebuild index command. The indexing icon disappeared after about 5 minutes, and came back about 30 minutes later. When I got up this morning indexing was finished.
Both my desktop and laptop crashed on indexing after the update today. The rebuild command alone did not work on either machine. The process of pausing and rebuilding worked on my desktop but not the laptop. I had to delete the index files on the laptop and restart the program. Both machines have now completed indexing without further problems. My thanks to those who have posted their fixes.
I had the same problem on my computer - haven't fixed it yet, but I will try deleting the index. Does anyone know why there was a problem in the first place? I mean with so many people having the same issue I really don't think it is our fault, something with Logos went wrong.
None of it is your fault. Some of the corruption occurring is not fully understood but the merge process can produce a corrupt index whether instigated by yourself or the Indexer. This is being fixed for 4.0b.
So we can either wait for 4.0b or type "Rebuild Index" and wait for 12 hours. <Grin>
Yeah, I just received the Calvin 500 collection and my indexer keeps crashing now as well. I will attempt to do as Melissa suggested. Hopefully this solves the problem for now.

Well, you can predict one of those events[:)]
Hello everyone!
I'm having the same problem with the indexing. A few days ago, Logos (I'm using 4.0b SR-2 (4.02.3.8750) on WinXP Pro) detected an update, and I clicked "Update Now". The updater then crashed, and subsequently typing "Update Now" returns no updates.
After that, the Indexer no longer works. I've tried deleting the Library Index folder, and I've tried "Rebuild Index", but neither solves the problem. It always returns the "Logos Bible Software 4 Indexer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error. Thankfully Logos 4 still continues to work in spite of that....
I'm running a new hard disk, with loads of free space, so I don't think it's a disk problem.
Help!

Martin,
Have you had any trouble updating the software or resources in the past? If not, has anything changed since the last time you were able to update, such as a different network connection, ISP, or firewall?
Thanks,Melissa
Hello Melissa,
Thanks for the super-fast response! [Y]
This is the first time I've had trouble updating the software. My network connection and ISP have been the same for ages. I'm using Eset Smart Security 4, but it's set to allow all in- and outbound traffic for Logos, and ESS4 will check with me if there are any other (unrecognized) network requests. That said, even after I turn off the firewall, the problem persists. The only other thing that might have changed are Windows updates... =P
Grateful for any help/suggestions... [:)]
Blessings,Martin
Grateful for any help/suggestions...
Martin, there are now two indexes in Logos4, the second being the BibleIndex. Have you tried deleting the files in that folder as well. Also rebuild Bible index should work, but there's some debate about whether that does the same thing as deleting the files in the index folders.
Hello Richard, thank you for your help and information! [:)] Unfortunately I've tried both your suggestions (deleting both index folders, plus the "rebuild Bible index" command), but no success... [:(] Still returning the same problem with the indexer, and no updates found, though Logos is still starting up...
Close Logos 4 and try clicking this link to update: http://downloads.logos.com/LBS4/Installer/Logos4Setup.exe.
Since downloading 4.0c, re-indexing on my laptop seems to stop (after 12 hours or so) just short of completion saying it cannot complete as there is not sufficient free disc space. Before it started indexing there was slightly over 6GB free space available on that drive partition, but apparently this was not enough given it has 5134 resources to go through. Vista does not seem willing to allow that partition to have its size increased which seems to leave me with little option that to remove some other software from that partition. Would it be possible in a future release of Logos 4 to allow the user to assign a different drive letter to be used as "free space for re-indexing" (that way I could use an external HD for this operation once back home), as it would seem that this space is only needed temporarily while re-building, (and hopefully in the long term we will not have to do re-indexing so frequently.... ).... oh for the day when we can get compact laptops with 2TB of storage on board !!
Before it started indexing there was slightly over 6GB free space available
If the Indexer does the job the worst case is that it rebuilds your entire index whilst retaining the original ie. you need as much free space as your current library index + at least 10% for Windows to operate efficiently (25% is recommended). So a 300 GB drive will always need at least 30 GB free. A 50 GB partition will need at least 5 GB free. At a guess your LibraryIndex folder would be 8 GB (it's in your Logos4\Data folder), so it's not a question of temporary space during indexing.
If you use the command rebuild index it will remove the original indexes before starting!
Thanks for all the help and suggestions! [Y] I've managed to fix the problem, by restoring my Logos files from a backup I made 2 weeks earlier. I overwrote whatever files had been changed since the backup -- which turned out to be almost all files and folders, apart from my resource files! After that, Logos started normally and detected an update. I have now successfully updated Logos to 4.0c (4.03.3.9511), my resources have been updated with the 4.0c upgrades, and Logos Indexer has completed re-indexing of my system (after running overnight...) So I now join the ranks of the satisfied 4.0c users! [:D]
Just a thought... This problem started after Logos detected an update but crashed while trying to update. Deleting the Library and Bible Indexes didn't help, but over-writing the other files (e.g. update manager, download manager, history manager, etc.) with working copies seems to have solved the problem. Perhaps somehow something went wrong with another module (e.g. update manager, download manager), which then somehow affected the Indexer? Just a thought...
Anyways, thanks once again for all the assistance. You guys and gals, and this forum, are great!! [:D]

To confirm:-
The problem occurred during the download of the 4.0c software update and could have been affected by previous downloads, especially Windows Update. It is quite likely that the condition was cleared before the successful attempt or was cleared because of the new files! It was not an index issue, though, as the Indexer was supervising the download.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply!
I confirm that my backup was 4.0b SR-2 (4.02.3.8750). I didn't do a complete overwrite; to save time I only restored those files that had an older date/time signature. These were files located in: Update Manager, History Manager, KeyLink Manager, Library Catalog, Download Manager, Statistics, Install, Users, LocalUserPreferences, History Mangaer, Guides, ReverseInterlinearManager, Updates, LayoutManager and UserPreferences. Hmmm... yes, basically all the files, other than those in my Resources folder...! [:P]
Thanks for your thoughts! Yes, perhaps Windows Update messed something up, and restoring my files from the backup seems to have cleared the problem. Now I'm happily using 4.0c. Hurrah! [:)]
