Kindle Fire 10 Bible App Averages 1-2 Minutes to Open

On my Kindle Fire 10 (1-2yo), 16Gb, the app typically takes over a minute to open.... I'll try to remember the sequence from this morning that prompted me to write. It's an all-too-common occurrence on the Kindle. By the time the app opens (even on the 1st try--sometimes there are a couple of tries before it fully opens), I've forgotten what passage I wanted to open to.

  • Look at devotional, open in prayer, look for today's Old Testament reading--it's Judges 13-14.
  • Open Kindle cover to wake up the Kindle.
  • Start Logos, trying to remember Judges 13-14.
  • Remember that I forgot to make sure all other apps are closed.
  • Bible Splash screen starts.
  • Remember to check for other apps, so I click icon to show all apps that are running; Logos minimizes.
  • Discover Bible is only running app.
  • Click on icon to return to Bible. Nothing happens. It's still "minimized" as if showing apps that are running.
  • Double click on Bible to try to get it to maximize again.
  • Nothing happens.
  • Try to swipe Logos right or left to close it & start over
  • Entire screen goes black.
  • Clock ticks. There's time to wonder if entire device is bricked.
  • Logos opens completely.
  • Go back to devotional to try to remember what passage I wanted in the 1st place.

This just isn't good! I love Bible & what it can do. But the slow opening time is driving me away from it. App slowness has already limited how I can use it. I'm stuck with the phone or a laptop. I've really tried! How have I learned to use it on this tablet?

  • TRIED to use it for annual study leave to do a deep dive into a Bible book; read 1-3 of best commentaries with a couple of panes open for language tools, whenever needed. Ended up reverting to laptop Logos.
  • I've tried to use it for quick answers on research, because the screen is so much better than my phone.
  • As it's ended up, I'm ONLY able to use Bible on my Kindle 10 for devotional reading. But sluggish opening times have me wondering if I should go to another Bible app that's quicker.

Can you offer any hope on the horizon that startup times will be quicker?

Grace & Peace,
Bill

Do you have many downloaded books? How large are your note documents?

Do you have many downloaded books? How large are your note documents?

I have several that I regularly use, but "many"? How many is many? The only ones on the machine are the ones I use regularly (in my 7 tabs that open, plus an interlinear & reverse interlinear for each language, plus these: ISBE, RCL, Bible Knowledge Commentary, & the New American Standard Exhaustive Concordance). Otherwise, I access them from the cloud. And I regularly cull the list on the device to save space.

I don't really know how large my note documents are because the 1st thing I do in EVERY resource on my handheld devices is TURN OFF display of notes--personal & community notes.  I only find notes useful on my laptop. That's part of why I reverted back to laptop for study leave on a commentary deep dive. I highlight a LOT, but I turn that display off for phone & tablet, & for normal use on the laptop.

Turning the note documents off does not delete the documents from your device. By design they are still there. Go into the system and see how much storage the app is taking up. That might be instructive. Also, how much free space is on the device?

System has 6.83 of 12.82 GB free
SD card has 14.69 of 14.83 free
Bible takes up 207 Mb of system memory.

    Bible should be fine.

How do I find out what Note files are downloaded? I'll remove them, because I haven't downloaded any on purpose (don't use them), so removing them is only a bonus.

If you delete the notes on your mobile device, they will delete from your desktop. Your app size seems to be wrong, but it is probably a discrepancy between iOS and Android.

Can I remove them from the device without deleting them?

That's what I have been trying to say... you can't! ALL notes (which are compatible with mobile) ALWAYS download to your device. No exceptions. If you delete it on one (Android, iOS, Mac, Windows), it deletes from ALL.

Based upon your description of your note taking habits, I assume that the 207 represents just the software engine. I doubt that it includes downloaded resources even. A Kindle user would need to guide you to figure out how much it is actually taking up. Sorry I can't help with that! [:s]

    Thanks, Alabama24.

I DO have downloaded resources that I don't want to have to wait for on opening. In the past, internet was too painful to leave them in the cloud. It's still faster to have all my tabs & a few other resources downloaded. Those are the ones I described in my original post.

Bottom line: it just SHOULDN'T be taking this long!

Sounds like a BUG to me.

Sounds like a BUG to me.

Me too. This morning, it was even worse than usual.

    1. Unlock the Kindle.
    2. Turn wireless back on.
    3. Make sure no other apps are running. (Twice)
    4. Start Bible app.\
    5. Look at mail on phone for awhile.
    6. Notice that Bible app is still dark. Nothing happening.
    7. Try to close Bible app. Can't.
    8. Try to use Kindle Menu to see what apps are open so I can close Bible from there. Nothing Works.
    9. Try to shut Kindle down. Can't. It's a brick at the moment.
    10. Repeat 3 times, press power button for 10 seconds. Still a brick.
    11. Press power button & hold it pressed. Nothing for a very long time.
    12. Without menus (normally, something like "Do you REALLY want to shut your kindle down?"), Kindle goes completely dark.
    13. Stunned for a few seconds. Press power button to try to turn Kindle back on.
    14. 1st 3 times I tried, nothing. 4th time, it comes up like nothing happened.
    15. Touch Bible Icon to start Bible again.
    16. Bible acts like it's going to open.
    17. After a long wait, Bible quits & Kindle home screen comes back.
    18. Start Bible again. THIS time, it still takes a long time but finally opens.

Doesn't sound normal to me, but I notice that no one from Logos has offered help.
