Notes seem broken on iOS Reader Application

Hello, I'm trying to learn how to use notes/highlights using some of the video tutorials and for some reason the Desktop Application (MacBook) displays notes much differently than my iOS reader (iPad 64gb).  I've included a screenshot below:

The notes on the iPad are rendered rather useless.

Any ideas?  Thank you.

Keith

Hi Keith - and welcome to the forums

I don't see this problem so we need to explore a bit further

One question - do you have the Notes document on the iPad set to display in Full or Compact mode? This is changed by tapping the three vertical dots at the top right and then selecting Layout.

If you are using Compact, try switching to Full and see what you get

    Hi Graham,

Yes this is in "Full" mode, I tried with both.  "Compact Mode" is slightly different in spacing but still shows the same amount of nothingness.

I'm wondering if the box with the red line through it is some type of indicator to the problem?

The software version installed is 7.2.4

    iOS Version: 11.3

    Free space on iPad: 6.16gb

Thank you for the timely response.

I am! Are you seeing content in the "title" section on iOS?

The software version installed is 7.2.4

Do you mean 6.x.x? I am on a beta version, and am running 6.3.1

I'm wondering if the box with the red line through it is some type of indicator to the problem?

No, but there is a discrepancy between desktop & mobile. The desktop shows a "white" box for "no note indicator." Mobile shows a "white box with red slash" for "no note indicator."

I am not sure what is going on, but for clarification: On the desktop, the area where you see content is actually the "title" of a highlight note. Over time, the behavior on desktop and mobile has changed. At one point the "title" was a FULL quotation  when created on mobile (due to limitations, was considered a "bug") but an abbreviated quote with an ellipsis when created on desktop. The last time I checked, mobile highlights were creating abbreviated quotes as the "title"... I think. To be honest, I don't have any use for "highlights" as notes and wished they would be hidden.

Also note: FL is in the process of creating a new highlighting engine, which will cause changes across all platforms.

Yes - but maybe only in notes originally created on the desktop.

I would need to check further to be sure of that.

JT, thanks for the clarification on that...yes it's 6.2.4

Honestly I don't quite get the "highlights" as notes either but I figured since I'm just dipping my toes in the water I may be missing the potential.  All I know is that on the mobile app, with notes created in all platforms (MacBook Application, app.logos.com, AND Logos iOS app), the error is the same.

Additionally, no matter where I create the highlight/note, the Desktop application and the iOS version carry the highlights over and the notes display correctly.  However, the Web app (app.logos.com) does not seem to carry my highlights.  It's like it's own world of highlights/notes.

Is it possible to just highlight without creating a "notes" entry every time?  That's sort of the point of a highlight in my opinion.  If I want to attach a note that's a different animal.

    Thanks,

    Keith

Hopefully I'm not confusing my original question.

My understanding was that no matter what was done in the iOS reader, Desktop app, or Web app, the changes carry across all platforms.

The box with the red slash and having blank titles (and no "Title" or verse reference) is obviously an error.

However, the Web app (app.logos.com) does not seem to carry my highlights.  It's like it's own world of highlights/notes.

Correct - the net notes platform JT mentioned above is first being developed on the web app. Currently this does not sync with the desktop notes environment (although there is a beta version some people are trying on the desktop) nor the mobile platform.

Is it possible to just highlight without creating a "notes" entry every time?

No - at the moment a highlight is an instance of a note.

Thanks Graham, that makes sense as far as the web app being different.

If you see/hear anything else about that bug let me know please, but otherwise I'll consider the issue "raised" and not worry about it for now.  It was just making me nuts because I didn't know if it was am"user error".

I don't agree with the first part of that. The "error," in my opinion, is that the desktop doesn't also have the white box with the red slash. The symbol is to denote that there is no indicator. The slash makes that more clear than simply a white box (which the user could interpret as a white box note indicator).

When you say that the symbol denotes there's no "indicator", what do you mean by that?

I guess I need to do a little more digging then to understand what I should be seeing.  I may be making too many assumptions.  The red-slash aside, looking at my original comparison graphic I just don't quite know what to do with the notes on the mobile version...at least those that are related to highlights.

Thanks for the insight on some of this.

A ”note indicator” is a flag/box/shape that you can place inside of a resource to “indicate“ the presence of a “note.” Hence a “note indicator.” In our previous discussion above, the desktop app is showing a white box to indicate that there is “no indicator” visible. The red slash, in my opinion, does a better job of that.

I suggest that you play around with it on the desktop and it will make more sense. Click the box and choose something else... just make sure the highlight is visible in an adjacent panel, else you won’t be able to see what is going on.
