Text Comparison tool shows too many verses

I'm using version 7.14.1.1124. I've always found the Text Comparison tool very useful, but it no longer works well.

Example: I put in a reference of 1 John 3:11. The tool shows that in the reference box, but insists on showing that verse plus ALL the rest of 1 John in the comparison. At times I'm wanting to look at how all my English bibles translate it, so the tool becomes unresponsive while it gathers all those verses for over 20 bibles, when I didn't ask it to. SOMETIMES it works by only showing the one verse, but I have no idea why it works sometimes and not others.

At times in the vertical display mode the scroll bars become unresponsive while other parts of the window still respond to mouse clicks. Many times I've had to close the window and start over to get it to be responsive even though I'm using the same settings.

Please give me back my old, useful text comparison tool.

Have a great day,
jmac

When I first started TC it was unresponsive generating the output, then it became much more responsive. That was with 5 bibles, but it was still responsive with 39 bibles. How many did you compare?

This version 2 (Logos 7) TC does generate multiple verses compared to the older version, but I wouldn't go back to the older version. Let's see what Faithlife have to say about the unresponsiveness.

Curious about opinion of F7 to show Text Comparison of Top 5 Bibles ?

Isn't 7.14.0.0024 the latest version supported for release? If you are on 7.14.1 I'm guessing you are on a beta channel. Could turning beta channel off get you back to 7.14.0?

TC does generate the whole chapter, but is very responsive even if I use my collection of all English Translations which is around 39 translations.

7.14.0.0024 is the current stable release. 7.15.0.0007 is the latest Beta. Logos wiki => The Logos 7 Beta Program has Frequently Asked Questions that includes:

    • Can I withdraw from the beta program? Beta bugginess is not for everyone (fixing some bugs spans several Beta releases). However, downgrading in middle of a beta development cycle is difficult; see previous question for potential corruption risk. If want to downgrade from Beta to Stable version, need to completely uninstall Beta before installing Stable. Optionally can use scan command to identify, copy, and index resources from a Beta installation.

Once a Beta version has upgraded your database files, trying to use an older Stable version will crash (detects database version is newer).

Sorry about not responding for so long. I didn't know about this feature. Seems to work ok. Just shows one verse.

If I just open the TC tool it will only show one verse, the top verse in my active Bible pane.

If I type a verse into the reference box in the TC tool, say 1 Jn 3:12, it will compare ALL of 1 John which will take a LONG time if I am comparing all my English Bibles. This is not user-friendly behavior.

Further the selection of reference to compare has now become totally confusing and in my opinion rather useless. When I select one of the items, say Top Bibles, the selection drop-down changes to show the top bible with boxes checked on the left of the Bible names, but it is totally unobvious how you actually make that selection active. I just click around until it takes. I find the drop-down confusing. It used to work very simply and very well.

Not sure how you observe that with the Tool, as opposed to using F7.

    Click outside the drop-down box.

I put a link in the top bar of the window to open the TC tool. It's the two horizontal arrows in this shot.

    Click outside the drop-down box.

Hmm. I was suspecting that, but it seemed like unusual way to confirm a selection.  Thanks

Wow, Dave. 39! And here I was wondering whether 7 was a tad too many. [:P]

Selecting more than one verse in a Bible followed by pressing F7 shows pop-up comparison of selected verses.

In Bibles, {Milestone <1J3.11>} search finds one verse for 1 John 3:11 (if verse appears in Bible). {Milestone <1J3.11-13>} finds three verses.

Search for <1J3.11> has 97 references to Bible verse 1 John 3:11 in a Word Biblical Commentary (WBC) volume while {Milestone <1J3.11>} shows WBC volume has three places with commentary about 1 John 3:11

It is just a shortcut. It still opens to show multiple verses.

I've appreciated the comments on my original post. I've learned that F7 will quickly compare highlighted verses in my top bibles and the the Milestone search will also compare verses across a collection.

However my initial complaint is still valid and unanswered by Logos and needs to be addressed. Someone has made a boo-boo.

I should not be forced to compare every verse of an ENTIRE book just because I want to compare one, or a few verses. The Text Comparison tool has been crippled.

In the example below, I opened to tool with my Bible pane in Ephesians. It created a new pane comparing the entire book, but that after I expanded the pane to a new window I got this half blank window for about 3 minutes while Logos gathered EVERY verse in the entire book of Ephesians in about 20 Bibles instead of just using the top verse in the Bible pane as the tool used to do. This is very, very unfriendly and did not used to work this way. I find it hard to imagine anyone would have made this change on purpose, but whatever the reason it should not remain this way.

I agree you initial complaint is still valid and remains unanswered by Logos.

But I wouldn't say its a boo-boo I'd say it's the way the intended.  Faithlife programmers don't like giving users choice, but if these tool was done well the user would be giving the opportunity to set the range of context they wanted to see around a verse looked up in the tool; a user could set if they want to see, 0, 1, 2, 3 etc verses before and after the verse of interest.  Instead FL have gone off on a tangent that everyone who uses the tool want's to do a text comparison of an unlimited range of text and thus failed to understand all of their customers needs.

I'd agree with doc. I use the MultiView tool for scrolling text comparisons ... and highlighting, etc to boot.

But in theory, Passage List should meet the needs of a single verse, or a list of different verses. Type the verse ref in, or import a list. And you can apply it to a list of Bibles, or collection/tagged.

That said, at least on my PC, responsiveness is even worse than the OP's Text Comparison, and half the CPU. Which is odd, since text is pretty small in modern memories. You wonder if it's playing poker or what on the side.

I agree! At the least provide a toggle to turn on/off the "infinite scrolling"!

Well, I would have to disagree. Logos has traditionally given a lot of choice to the user, in fact they've overdone it in some cases, hence the complex "language" of search parameters that I can never remember (One area they did did pretty well is the menu selection pop-up for the morphology search.)

The Text Comparison tool USED to not force the comparison of an entire book. It used to simply compare the one verse you had at the top of your active Bible window when you opened the tool and if you wanted more you could highlight it before opening the tool, or simply enter it in the reference field of the tool. It's only very recently that this has changed. Someone either made a mistake or "improved" the tool without thinking it through.
