Highlighting

This has been a LONG term issue for me and unfortunately I have been remiss in reporting it. First I have a 64g iPad Air 2. I am a prolific highlighter and MANY time I would highlight something only to have it disappear shortly (a second or two) after. Other times I would highlight and it does not apply or show until what is a significant delay. This behavior negatively impacts productivit! I may be doing something wrong or perhaps a setting is wrong. Forgive me for the delay in reporting!

You may have "large note syndrome". Some thoughts:

Have you verified that the note document is switched "on"?
Do you know where the highlights are stored?
If so, how do you organize your documents?
Do you understand the differences between how the behavior is controlled on desktop vs. mobile?
How many pages would it take to print the large(r) documents?

Thanks for the response JT. At one time I did have large notes syndrome but quite a while back I changed many things. For instance, I have a note file for each book and I primarily use only one translation (for notes and highlights). The incident that initiated this post was actually a NEW note file with less than 10 entries. This lag in applying a highlight (which DOES NOT occur all the time) and the disappearing of highlights already applied, seems to be no respecter of note files. It happens randomly and cannot be consistently reproduced. However, it has gone on for a long time. I cannot remember if it happens on my laptop but I don't think so. There is NO problem with notes, it is just highlights.

I have a file for each Bible book. The 10 entries in this case was the note file on 1 Corinthians.

Large Note Syndrome also affects many notes spread across multiple documents in the same resource. I honestly don’t know if there are any performance benefits with your setup. There certainly is benefits when spread across different resources.

Which method do you use to send the notes to the “bible book specific” note documents?

My apologies, but I am not sure of what you are asking regarding what method I use. I either highlight a word or phrase if the note is to be for a specific word or phrase or if it is a verse note I tap on verse number and select “note”.

On the desktop, the "behavior" for highlight notes are sent to the respective note documents is controlled by each highlighting pallet. The options include: "Pallete specific", "resource specific," and "most recent" (aka "sticky"). On mobile (or at least on iOS), the behavior is controlled app wide and is NOT controlled by the pallets (as it is on desktop). Are you aware of the different methods? Are you aware that the behavior is controlled differently on the two platforms? To troubleshoot, it is imperative that you know both of these things very well.

You have said that you have "bible book" specific note documents. To get highlights into those documents requires action on your part, hence my question: "which method do you use?"

Resource Specific is my favorite method, but not for what you have intended. For example, ALL highlights made in the NIV would go into a document named The New International Version (the name of the resource). Since you want the highlights in a bible book note document, this isn't the right method.
Most Recent was my preferred method until FL relented and created "resource specific." To send highlights into a specific note document, you open it up. All highlights will be sent to that note document until you interact with another note document. Care must be made to ensure highlights are going to the right place.
Pallete Specific is my least preferred method. In this model, a user would create 66 different pallets to send highlights to bible book note documents. For example: To send a highlight to the 1 Corinthians note document you would have to use the highlighter pallet named 1 Corinthians.

As I said above: Performance wise, I don't believe that you will benefit much by having bible book note documents. (There well may be other reasons to do so, but that isnt the topic at hand). In the past, I have experienced difficulties with highlights created in a resource with MANY other highlights but sent to a brand new note document. Your description fits my experience.

I am curious to find out what happens on your installation if you create highlights in a virgin resource and send them to a virgin note document.

...or not. I do know that FL is making big changes to notes, some of which is in limited beta now. I don’t know how soon, or how it may affect us performance wise. I am tempted to say “wait,” but if I do, it won’t be released for 3 years. [:P]

I have the same problem with highlights flashing on and off. It only happens on my iPad Pro IOS 11.4 when I'm at church and NOT at home. So I'm wondering if it's an internet strength issue. Even so, the internet does work at church so there must be some issue with Logos mobile or with my iPad settings. Any ideas?

If I understand you correctly, it's all about how I organize my notes. I created them by books of the bible. I have very many notes going back to 2002! So, if I wanted to change them to Resource Specific I would need to move them all into a few note documents. However, I have many versions of the bible I create notes for. Since I primarily use the NKJV the lion share (probably 95%) would go into this note book. That would take a long time to move them all, and I'm not sure I would want to anyway. I don't experience the flashing notes at home, but only when I'm away, at church or work, for example. Seems to me that Faith Life should fix this problem.

No, my point was that performance can be hit one of two ways: 1) having a LARGE note document and/or 2) having MANY highlights in a single resource. One solution to that problem, for many users, it to use "resource specific note documents" to create smaller note documents. However:

Using "resource specific" note documents have other benefits (if nothing else than simply keeping things organized), but you aren't likely to see performance enhanced in your case (or at least not in the NKJV).

You shouldn't move the 95%, you should move the 5%!

Seems to me that Faith Life should fix this problem.

FL is revamping the whole notes engine. I don't have any idea what that will do to performance.
