I use it often and love it! I generally prefer it over HALOT, but I do use both in conjunction with one another. Many (most?) Of my friends prefer HALOT as it seems more widely referenced. But DCH also includes usage and references to other sources using Hebrew (i.e. DSS, Ben Sira, inscriptions, etc). I like the slightly wider range of usages that provides. I was concerned that I'd find the extra biblical material "muddying the water". But, the distinction is clear in each entry. And, it does give you quick frequency of usage for each word that shows how many times each is used in Biblical Hebrew, Sirach, Qumran & Other no-biiblical texts, and inscriptions. So, for instance, פֶּן (lest) shows 133.34.40.2 which immediately tells me that it is used 133 times in BH, 34 times in Sirach, 40 in DSS, and only shows up 2 times in inscriptions.
It is pricey. And, if I could only buy one, I'd admit that I'd have bought HALOT. But, with both at my fingertips I actually slightly prefer DCH over HALOT.
Excellent review Chris. I also have both but must confess that I don't use DCH that often compared to HALOT but that could be just because I have not been spending a lot of time using my limited Hebrew these days. But each time I see a post like yours it makes me want to use it more.
A very valuable resource when you want detail of how Hebrew words were used. Outstanding.
Thank you guys.
I did buy it yesterday in a Languages bundle. I already had HALOT, so maybe now I have a good solid setup with the tools to dig deep when needed. I also pre-ordered the 9th vol of DCH.
Thanks again.
