Mattillo:

Maybe Faithlife can just talk to Masters and get them added in?

We have. I'm pretty sure the blocking issue is an exclusive distribution agreement that doesn't allow them to let Galaxie or us also distribute them.

Thank you Phil. I guess I was hoping you could work something out like you have with RC Sproul's questions series where they and you provide then for free... Maybe if you add them for free they will allow it? Otherwise I'll stick to the copy/paste/import method I guess. Thank you again

This is a third-party product produced by Galaxie Software that we're distributing. We cannot include this content in our journal bundles unless we have our own license.

Thanks, Phil, for the answer. That makes sense, but perhaps you could add a note on the page for the new Theological collection, stating that this is NOT included with the Master Journals? Otherwise, I think people might not realize that and would not order it! I know I almost didn't.

Thanks again!

There are ~20 journals in this collection that are not in the Master Journal Bundle. I think this is the list, though some of these are no longer being updated due to no longer being published or rights issues.

Thanks for the clarification. Add me to the list of people that didn't realize this.

I did not realize this either. But this just makes the entire Journal offerings even more confusing.  Just when you think FL cannot possibly be more confusing on the issues of Journals, they managed to find a way.

The information listed for Master Journal Bundle 4.1 on the website states: "The Master Journal Bundle 4.1 features over 100 new volumes and includes everything found in the Academic Journal Bundle 4.1, the Theology Journal 4.1, and the TJL Upgrade Bundle 4.1."

You would think this means that the Masters Journal Bundle 4.1 includes everything and more that is offered in the Theological Journal Library. But apparently it does not.  So now I learn that I need to pre order BOTH in order to obtain ALL.

The Journal offerings of FL, (from when they abandoned the successful model of using Galaxie, to its current offering) would make a great case study in how not to advertise and promote a product.

The Theological Journal Library they're selling now is the Galaxie product, but what's confusing is the TJL Upgrade Bundle 4.1. That's redundant now that the Theological Journal Library is back.

Here's what FL needs to do:

1. Cancel the TJL Upgrade Bundle 4.1 Pre-Pub. Inform customers that the Galaxie Theological Journal Library Vol 1-20 is back on Pre-Pub, and if they want Theological Journal Library, migrate to this Pre-Pub (with dynamic pricing of course).

2. On the Galaxie Theological Journal Library Vol 1-20 page, inform customers this is a standalone bundle from the Master Journal Bundle being offered as a partnership between FL and Galaxie. Also mention that some (but not all) content from the Galaxie Theological Journal Library Vol 1-20 overlaps with the Master Journal Bundle 4.1. Then mention that customers who wish to own both the Galaxie Theological Journal Library Vol 1-20 and the Master Journal Bundle 4.1 can pre-order both and receive a dynamic price upgrade for the overlap content as each ships so the customer only pays for the journals once.

3. Market the Galaxie Theological Journal Library as the Galaxie+FL partnership product and the Master Journal Bundle as a separate FL product that offers access to additional journals outside the realm of what is offered in the Galaxie product. For future Master Journal Bundles, it might be best just not to include the Galaxie content in there at all, so customers can purchase the Galaxie TJL products for the Galaxie content and the Master Journal Bundles for additional content not offered by Galaxie.

Hi Phil,

I am curious as apparently others are here, are the 4.1 bundles like the 3.1 bundles and will come out regardless of the responses (or the fact they were for some reason not reflecting the true interest ) and came out pretty quickly production--wise?

The obvious reason I ask is of course the new Theological package based on Galaxie which offers a fair amount of confusion. I figured it out and ordered it, but apparently not many others have. Does it require some level of response to happen or will it also be like 3.1 and already in production? At any rate, clearly something needs to be done to get more people involved at this point and I am certain you are working on a solution, but if it is like the 3.1 release at least those of us who have ordered it will know it is happening regardless. Thanks for all your efforts.

Nathan Parker is correct.  It should have been obvious.

Actually Nathan is not correct. The TJL  Upgrade Bundle 4.1 is NOT redundant. There are newer (read that to mean more recent) volumes included in the TJL-upgrade that are not listed in the Galaxie product.

  • Ashland Theological Journal, vols. 1–45 (1968–2013)
  • Bibliotheca Sacra, vols. 1–174 (1844–2017)
  • Bulletin for Biblical Research, vols. 1-27 (1991–2017)
  • Chafer Theological Seminary Journal, vols. 1–14 (1995–2009)
  • Conservative Theological Journal, vols. 1–7 (1997–2003)
  • Conspectus: The Journal of the South African Theological Seminary, vols. 1-24 (2006–2017)
  • Detroit Baptist Seminary Journal, vols. 1-22 (1996–2017)
  • Journal for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, vols. 1-21 (1995–2016)
  • Journal of Discipleship and Family Ministry, vols. 1–6.1 (2010–2015, Fall/Winter 2017)
  • Journal of Dispensational Theology, vols. 10–21 (2006–2017)
  • Journal of Ministry and Theology, vols. 1–21 (1997–2017)
  • Journal of the Grace Evangelical Society, vols. 1–30.1 (1988–Spring 2017)
  • Maranatha Baptist Theological Seminary, vols. 1–5 (2011–2015)
  • Priscilla Papers, vols. 1–32.1 (1987–Winter 2018)
  • Puritan Reformed Journal, vols. 1–10 (2009–2018)
  • Southern Baptist Journal of Theology, vols. 1–21 (1997–2017)
  • Tyndale Bulletin, vols. 1–68 (1956–2017)
  • Westminster Theological Journal, vols. 1–79 (1938–2017)

Clearly not redundant, but an upgrade to even the new Galaxie offering.

The surest way to cause even more confusion is to start changing things.

The ONLY thing that MAY make sense is to alter the name of the Galaxie product to reflect where it comes from.

Phil Gons (Faithlife):
You can safely pre-order both. When we ship them, we'll charge you only for the portion of the collection you don't own. So if we ship MJB 4.1 first, you'd then own a license to everything included in it. When we ship TJL 1–20, your dynamic price will be lower than what you see today, since you'll own more of it then than you do now.

Thanks for the clarification.

Nathan,

Unless I have misunderstood ( a good possibility), I think the TLJ upgrade Faithlife put out was intended to be a upgrade to Galaxie's product, based upon what journals they were able to license. As we all know they were not able to get a license for everything Galaxie offered. So henceforth the need to go back to Galaxie and bring them back into the fold.

The problem is there are now duplicates of content being offered. I would expect that Faithlife wants to sell everything it can license. Phil has said we will get credit for everything we have bought regardless of the source, and not pay twice, that's good news.

What I don't anticipate happening is having two files of the same journal. If Faithlife has a license then we will have that file, not Galaxie's file. Phil can correct me on this.

We'd like to avoid duplicating files if at all possible. Our current plan is to use the same files across all collections. So whether you acquire a license to a given journal through one of our journal bundles or the Galaxie TJL, the end-user experience will be the same. Everyone will have the same license and file.

Now I'm confused about the Galaxie Theological Journal Library and Faithlife's TJL upgrade bundles and what to recommend to people. Faithlife has finally made me hopelessly confused on this one.

Thanks, Phil. I've already ordered both. The recent name change works for me. If people want JETS and the other volumes they order the newest Galaxie set. If they don't they can continue to upgrade as they have slralre been doing! You guys are great! Thanks!

Galaxie releases their annual updates every October/November. We release our updates as we get them (aiming for quarterly, ideally). So our TJL upgrade bundle will usually be ahead of the Galaxie TJL where there's overlap. That's out of our control, unless you prefer we no longer ship journals more frequently and hold them back until the end of the year, which doesn't seem ideal to me.

There's really nothing to be confused about. Just pre-order everything you're interested in and let dynamic pricing for Pre-Pubs take care of the rest. There's nothing to lose.

What else isn't clear?

If a person wants ALL the journals offered by Logos today, what does he/she need to order?  Please help complete this question:

1. Master Journal Bundle 4>1

2. Galaxie's Theological Journal

3. What other journals are not contained in these two packages that are available in Logos?

That makes sense. I originally thought the TJL Upgrade Bundle would be replaced by the Galaxie bundle, and that the TJL Upgrade Bundle was FL's implementation of the Galaxie bundle sans-Galaxie. I didn't realize that the TJL Upgrade Bundles would continue to offer more frequent updates and content not in the latest Galaxie bundle.

Since I own the Master Journal Bundle, my strategy moving forward would be to continue purchasing the Master Journal Bundles and the Galaxie bundles. This way I "get it all".

For people who ask me for journal recommendations, I'll tell them to start with the Galaxie bundles to get all the Galaxie content, then use the Master Journal Bundles to top off the rest.

Thanks!

Phil, is this correct?  Please confirm.

Aren't there other journals in Logos that are not part of the Master and Galaxie bundles?
