Question: Collections and Commentary Sets

I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to set up a collection of a commentary set that isn't necessarily labelled as a set. For example, I have a few commentary sets and some begin with a title like 'XYZ Commentary: I Kings' and those are easy to group by using 'title'. But then I have a few others that are just 'I Kings' and later in the description it says its part of the 'ABC' commentary series. The tag for some of them are just 'commentary'. And community tags offer perhaps 'commentaryexegetical' but not much else. Is there a way to call up all the book in a commentary series (without having to go through the entire list in the library) and assign them to a collection without using 'title'?
I already have commentaries assigned by book (such as all the commentaries on I Kings) in one collection. But sometimes I just want to look at a commentary set (such as cross-referencing what is said in commentary set XYZ as they describe the same event in I Kings and I Chronicles.

Bill:
Usually Logos sells commentaries in a set already marked as a Series. (This isn't always so; there was some inconsistency in the various iterations of the Tyndale sets.) Are your set(s) in question set as a Series (in the resource info window beneath the mobile devices area)?

Looking at one series, yes, it does have a series name.

I see where you are going with this... by using 'series' and then that name, the collection finds them all. THANKS! That was really helpful!

Bill:
If you're new to the concept of Series, you might find this reply helpful: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/159263/954228.aspx#954228 beginning with the second paragraph.

Rather than assign by book/Title, use a collection rule like type:bible-commentary subject:(1-Kings, O.T.-Commentaries, Bible-Commentaries) where
- type:bible-commentary selects all bible commentaries --> see Type column in your Library
- subject: selects the content --> see Subjects column in your Library. Comma = OR
- 1-Kings is the book "1 Kings" from sets or series of commentaries
- O.T.-Commentaries is for one-volume commentaries on the old testament; use N.T. for new testament books.
- Bible-Commentaries is for one-volume commentaries on the whole bible
This type of rule means that new commentaries will be automatically included.

This is the pattern I've been using to set up my commentary selections by books of the Bible:
OT Commentaries on the Book of First Kings
type:commentary AND (title:kings OR subject:kings) ANDNOT ((subject:”2nd” OR title:”2 Kings”) ANDNOT (subject:”1st” OR title:”1 Kings”))
Am I not doing it right?
0 -
No, because it included a commentary on 2 Kings, not 1 Kings. And it omitted FIVE (5) volumes on 1 Kings and 2 Kings!
All I used was type:bible-commentary subject:1-Kings
- the hyphen saves having to express a space within quotes i.e. 1-Kings = "1 Kings"
- unlike a book Title, subject does not use 2nd, 1st, Second, First etc.
- subject will list each book e.g. 1 Kings; 2 Kings; 1 Chronicles; 2 Chronicles
And you've not included single-volume commentaries as I described above.

Okay. Thanks for the tip. I tried your type:bible-commentary subject:1-Kings formula and it does seem to work better at finding my resources. Thank you everyone for your tips and advice. I appreciate the assistance.

Note that this does not actually produce all commentary on a Bible book but only all resources labelled as commentaries on 1 Kings. Running the Passage Guide for instance produces a much longer list that includes Bible handbooks, study Bibles, and volumes that cover a range that does not include the text "1 Kings" such as Genesis-Malachi or historical books.

Logos wiki => Canonical Commentary Collections has complex rule for 1 Kings:
(Type:(Commentary,Notes) AND Subject:”O.T.1 Kings”) OR Title:(“Commentary on the Holy Scriptures: 2 Kings”,”D. A. Carson Sermon Library”,”Hard Sayings of the Bible”,”An Introduction to the Bible”,”Jonathan Edwards Sermons”,”JPS Tanakh: Haftarot”,”The Kings and Their Gods: The Pathology of Power”,”Our Daily Homily”,”The Rabbinic Messiah”,”Scripture Parallels in Ancient Classics; or, Bible Echoes”,”Synthetic Bible Studies”,”When Critics Ask: A Popular Handbook of Bible Difficulties”,”When Cultists Ask: A Popular Handbook on Cultic Misinterpretations”) OR (Title:(“Christ in All the Scriptures”,”The Life of David”,”Old Testament Theology”) AND Author:(Hodgkin,House,Pink)) OR (Title:”Feasting on the Word: Preaching the Revised Common Lectionary:” AND Title:(“Year A, Volume 3”,”Year B, Volume 3”,”Year C, Volume 1”,”Year C, Volume 3”)) OR (Title:Hebrew-Ugaritic AND Title:”Index to the Writings of Mitchell J. Dahood”) OR MyTag:C11IK
that includes Monographs (by Title) with Bible indexing search results in 1 Kings.
Search results include more resource types: e.g. Apparatus, Bible Harmony, Calendar Devotional, ...

The full rule I supplied earlier is for resources of type Bible Commentary, and the only additional resources listed by a Passage Guide on "All Commentaries" were of type Bible Notes i.e. Handbooks, Study Bibles. If you want to include those, the rule becomes
type:bible-notes OR (type:bible-commentary AND subject:(1-Kings, O.T.-Commentaries, Bible-Commentaries))
because the subject metadata (and Title) of type Notes does not indicate their content.

This complex rule (my emphasis) isn't helpful. For starters, Type:(Commentary,Notes) AND Subject:”O.T.1 Kings” does not include any of my 16 Bible Notes that actually produce results for 1 Kings in the Commentaries section of PG. Wiki rules like this need to be corrected (see my rule above).
Monographs, Apparatus, Bible Harmony, Calendar Devotional, .. may have milestones but they they don't produce results in the Commentaries section.

Noted your rule above does not include Bible Notes, which are a different resource Type than Bible Commentary.
I used type:bible-notes OR (type:bible-commentary AND subject:(1-Kings, O.T.-Commentaries, Bible-Commentaries)) in this post above.
Found 13 out of 69 Bible Note resources in my library match subject:(1-Kings, O.T.-Commentaries, Bible-Commentaries) while 34 Bible Notes resources have Bible milestone(s) in 1 Kings.
My point is that not all Notes have the subject metadata and a rule like Type:(Commentary,Notes) AND Subject:”O.T.1 Kings” will fail to find all Notes with that milestone.

Concur rule like Type:(Commentary,Notes) AND Subject:”O.T.1 Kings” does not include resources that comment on many Books, which is reflected on wiki => https://wiki.logos.com/Canonical_Commentary_Collections#Complex_Canonical_Collection_Rules
These collection rules do not include one volume resources that have Milestone(s) for that Book, refer to One Volume Commentary Collections
Complex rule for Acts begins with Type:(Commentary,Notes) AND Subject:(N.T.Acts,N.T.—Harmonies) that includes three Bible Notes:
Some Bible Note resources are specific to one Book.

Again, you miss the point. Resources of type:Notes do not have the subject metadata to be classified in the same way as resources of type:Commentary, even if some (very few) happen to be correctly classified e.g. your three books on Acts.
Consequently, the One Volume Commentary Collection rules will omit most of my Notes resources. The NT rule includes 10 out of 18 mainly because they are "Bible—Handbooks". That same NT rule also includes Wiersbe’s Expository Outlines on the Old Testament, because of (Subject:Bible AND (Subject:(”N.T.—Commentaries”, Outline)))

Found 69 Bible Notes in my library have individual Book Subjects for 20 New Testament Books and 9 Old Testament Books

Please create a Notes collection with minus resources for One Volume Commentary Collection to show Bible Note resources not included in One Volume Commentary Collection rules. Would appreciate seeing title and subject for Bible Notes that should be included.
Am revamping One Volume Commentary Collection rules after learning Subj:Bible-Commentaries includes Subj:Bible-Commentaries-Collected-Works with many Book specific volumes:

NT Rule has title exclusion for "Outlines on the Old" to exclude Wiersbe's Expository Outlines on the Old Testament.

Am revamping One Volume Commentary Collection rules after learning Subj:Bible-Commentaries includes Subj:Bible-Commentaries-Collected-Works with many Book specific volumes:
You should bring this to the attention of Faithlife via Metadata Proposals or a new thread - it is incorrect. I don't have any with that attribute.
Please create a Notes collection with minus resources for One Volume Commentary Collection to show Bible Note resources not included in One Volume Commentary Collection rules. Would appreciate seeing title and subject for Bible Notes that should be included.
I now appreciate that there are many Notes with accurate Subject metadata. My Notes are mainly the older Study Bible.
As you see Bible.O.T.-Commentaries & Bible.N.T.-Commentaries is applied incorrectly to The Evidence Bible. Should be Bible-Commentaries
