TOPIC: Name.Deity

Note that this information is about individual instances of the use of a name of God and, therefore, fits more appropriately in the person data rather than the name data. However, the title of the interactive would lead most users to expect to see it here.

QUESTION: Where do I find the interactive Names of God?

SOFTWARE: The interactives are treated as library resources (books) and as tools.

Method 1:  Command bar

  1. Using the command bar (system icon at the top/left of the toolbar) enter Open Names of God
  2. Select Open Names of God under Books.

Method 2: Tools

  1. Select the Tools menu on the application toolbar.
  2. Select the last of the subdivisions Interactive Media
  3. Select Names of God

Method 3: Library panel

  1. Open library panel from icon on the tool bar.
  2. If it is not open, open the left sidebar, i.e. the facet selection option, with the toggle switch in the top left corner (3 parallel lines)
  3. In the Find box of the sidebar (not the Find books bar at the top), enter interactive.
  4. Selective interactive under type
  5. From the resulting list, click on Names of God to open it where the application chooses or drag and drop the title to a tile of your choice.

 

QUESTION: What information do I find in the interactive Names of God?

SOFTWARE: This data which has faceted screening is documented only internally. The names of God are based on the original languages which occasionally causes duplicates in the translation with different underlying originals texts. This list of data is from the About option of the interactive.

  • Names of: Identifies the data as belonging to God the Father, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. You may find data you consider anachronistic; this is the inevitable result of Logos/Verbum supplying interpretative data.
  • Language: This is the language of the underlying original text i.e. Aramaic, Greek, or Hebrew.
  • Speaker: When the name is within reported speech, this identifies the speaker.
  • Addressee: When the name is within reported speech, this identifies who was spoken to.
  • Literary types: data not actually available
  • People: People mentioned implicitly or explicitly in the associated text. Think Factbook tags.
  • Places: Places mentioned implicitly or explicitly in the associated text. Think Factbook tags.
  • Things: Things mentioned implicitly or explicitly in the associated text. Think Factbook tags.
  • Themes: Themes assigned by Logos to the associated text.

Note regarding themes: For my purposes, I rarely find the Logos assigned themes useful. Therefore, I don’t have enough experience with them to speak on the topic. The types of themes that I do find useful are those found in works such as:

  • Ramshaw, Gail. Treasures Old and New: Images in the Lectionary. Minneapolis, MN:Fortress Press, 2002.

From my perspective, the data offered by this interactive is not related tightly to the name of God, but rather emphasizes the context in which this name was used.

 

QUESTION: What facets can I screen the interactive Names of God entries by?

  • Names of (member of the Trinity)
  • Language (original)
  • Speaker
  • Addressee
  • People
  • Places
  • Things
  • Themes

I prefer using the Angels, Demons, and Deities dataset which can be searched to gather the names of God or the Factbook on a person of God.
