In summary, it appears that I am unable to selectively italicise (or embolden) text in song slides. Special formatting will only apply to the entire slide (i.e. italics will only apply to the entire song, or not at all).
I presume this is not by design.
With other slides (i.e. bible text or custom content slides, I am able to apply special formatting selectively).
As a side note, it seems in consistent that I should be presented with the special formatting tools from the main edit screen for custom and bible text slides (as seen in the screenshot below), but not for song slides,
I am presently working on a Mac.
