[ACK 6.4] Logos 6 (OS X)—Shortcut Icon in Dock?

After downloading the newest update, the dock icon for Logos 6 is showing up for me as a shortcut icon. This is of course minor, but, I assume, unintentional.

Is anyone else seeing this behavior?

Again, not a huge deal, but it sure doesn't look as pretty as it should. Please note also that when I initially tell the program to "stay in the dock," the arrow isn't there. Only upon the app's next use does the icon include the shortcut arrow.

I saw this mentioned in the beta forums before the stable release was shipped and yes, it is the current behavior for me as well. Another "interesting" thing is that clicking the dock icon doesn't display the initial splash screen while launching from the launch pad does!

I saw it as well - yuk, Windows creep. I would mention like I did years ago about making Logos more "Mac like", but I might be 'told off' by one of the Pritchetts again. Double [:P]

Also when I start Logos 6 this way (with this Windows shortcut type of icon) my screen briefly flashes to black and back again.

One of our Mac devs was asked about this, and it’s an alias now so that it will work across versions due to the changes in the update process. (Apple places that arrow there) We hope to have this removed in 6.4.

Except every other Mac application seems to be able to work in a standard Mac way and not have this issue including when the app is updated. So really Logos is the 'odd man out' here. I hope that FL accepts that it is the one not working in a standard Mac way and can get the dock icon back working properly.

Essentially on the Mac Logos has changed it to be an 'application within an application', I gather for the purposes of improving how Logos is updated.

If one looks at the contents of the Logos Bible Software 6 app (see my other post) they will see this...

the 'Current' folder is a Mac Unix soft link as can be seen if one does a folder listing...

it shows that 'Current' points to the actual version folder. As the app path is a soft link OS X shows the soft link indicator in the UI. Of course it must be noted also that this is not a standard OS X way of working - which is why you do not see the soft link indicator for any other Mac OS X application.

No, I tested this and it still appears (after the second restart). That got me thinking about your workflow and I thought that perhaps you don't have the icon "kept in the dock." Am I right about this? In other words, when you quit the application does the icon disappear from your dock? I tried it this way (both from spotlight as well as my normal method, launchpad) and since each time it's essentially a "fresh" icon, that ugly arrow never shows up! I rarely used the dock to launch Logos, but had locked it to the dock, partially to give it a place of preeminence among my apps. [:D]

Could well be - it has to be remembered that what Logos Faithlife is doing on the Mac is not 'Mac like' and things may break. As I mentioned earlier I also notice that if I launch Logos 6 from the dock I also see (which did not happen previously) that the screen (on my Macbook Air) flashes black for an instant.

I have tested and if I pin Logos 6 to the dock at first it is OK, but after about 2-3 loads it shows the alias/shortcut like change to the icon. I've just removed it and now load from Spotlight.

I joke a bit about the Pritchetts coming to get me, but the fact remains that having an 'app within an app' is unusual on the Mac hence we see things like this. Anyway I am sure the developers have investigated it and if there are any problems they will fix them.

You are indeed Reuben. Seeing as I launch most applications from Spotlight I have never really bothered about what was pinned to the dock – and when I checked Logos wasn't.

As you can imagine; if the arrow did appear on my icon it would not affect me too much apart from the constant itch about the time for fulfilment of a promise about a program being 'built for the mac from the ground up' seems to be receding into the distance.

Sure it sort of works; but the things that make a mac such a joy in other programs seem to be missing from this kludge.

Here's a one up from the rest of the discussion. I have read the entire thread, and my icon actually goes one step further. On my 2015 Macbook Pro 15" the icon is fine until I open Logos 6. At that time the icon on the doc switches to a document shortcut icon, meaning a blank white "sheet of paper" with the shortcut arrow at the bottom left. No Logos "cross in a magnifying glass" at all. If I remove it from the dock, and then put it back from the applications folder, it looks fine until I open Logos 6. At that point it's back to square one. No big deal, but annoying and ugly! BTW, I just migrated to the new macbook Pro. This behavior was not present on my previous Macbook Pro 2011 running Yosemite. Go figure!

Here's a one up from the rest of the discussion. I have read the entire thread, and my icon actually goes one step further.

If it's still the same issue, then the problem is fixed in 6.4 which is in beta right now. According to the 6 week release cycle 6.4 should ship on or around the 29th of this month. If you don't wanna wait until then, you can join the beta (after reading all the caveats!) by entering "set update channel to beta" into the command box.

I see the same problem on my Mac. It makes it a document shortcut. I look forward to this being fixed in 6.4

It depends upon what you mean by "go back to stable." Yes, you can change your update channel back to stable and when the next release comes out GREATER THAN the beta you are using, it will download. No, you cannot go from beta to stable during the beta cycle... at least not without performing a COMPLETE reinstall.
