I Use Nokia Lumia 830. Yes, you are right. First Preview builds had been very unstable. The current one looks quite well and I have very few crushes. I use it as my main phone.

How much space does it take up?

I have an aging I3 Win7 machine with 8MB ram and plenty of hard drive space.  Would WIN10 load faster, be faster on my machine, thus apps as well (perhaps WIN10 does more with less overhead)?  I was just going to stick with WIN7 but this thread has me wondering.  Thanks!

It is rock solid, and what they dreamed fantasized Vista/7/8 would be.

I installed Windows 10 today, and have had quite a few problems. It certainly hasn't been an easy upgrade. My issues include:

  • The standard install kept getting stuck so I had to download and install from the .ISO file.
  • Neither the graphics driver nor printer driver installed, so I had to install them both manually.
  • My brand new USB 802.11ac network adaptor doesn't have a working Windows 10 driver.
  • Microsoft Office needed to be repaired. A quick repair was enough to get it running, but I had to do a full repair to get my emails indexed in Outlook.
  • Several programs wouldn't work at all and had to be reinstalled: iTunes, Kaspersky Total Internet, Samsung Magician.
  • Most of my shareware programs lost their licencing, and had to be reinstalled (they wouldn't even allow me to re-enter the licence code). This includes Revo Uninstaller, SIW Pro, and several others.
  • My default sound card and microphone got changed to something I don't use, so I had no sound.

Logos was fine, though!

I truly am sorry you had such a bad morning. It's strange some folks have no issues, and others have a multitude.Sad

Admitting my addiction makes me blush. Embarrassed ....I have quite a stable of windows machines. I loaded 10 on all of them months ago, and have not had any of the issues you are plagued by.

Thanks for that preview, Mark. I'm thinking now that I might wait until the weekend when I'll have more time.

I too have older i3 laptop with only 4GB RAM.  Win 8 is faster loading that Win 7.  I would expect the same for Win 10, maybe better.  We will see.

I too am sorry you had challenges....i installed Win 10 early this am with no challenges so far.  I haven't tested everything yet, so I am reserving judgement until I can try everything out including all prior installed apps, i.e., Logos....

I updated my Surface Pro 3 last night.  It was a smooth process.  Logos is up and running and the OS looks great!

I find it strange that I registered my older Acer machine for the upgrade long before the newer Toshiba which is presently upgrading but the Acer is not.

My kids are excited. The folder on my Acer has a July 10 date and the Toshiba July 28.

Windows 10 should boot faster than 7, and a perhaps even a little bit faster than 8. Windows 8 had about half the memory footprint of 7, and 10 is about the same so in day to day running there will likely be little difference between 8 and 10's performance with the exception of some video based applications if you have a supported DirectX 12 video card.

Now for the warning. An old machine won't have manufacturer's drivers for Windows 10 so you may have to use the ones from Microsoft. These generally work okay, but may not perform optimally. For an example, on one of my machines, the sound worked with basic Windows 10 driver, but wasn't nearly as loud as it was supposed to be. Some Windows 7 drivers may not work properly. If the machine has Windows 8 drivers available from the manufacturer (such as cases where a machine was downgraded to 7), then there is a higher likelihood these will work fine.

Just some things to consider.

That's a bummer Mark. I installed the upgrade this morning with no issues at all. So far I have not discovered any problems.

Not just 7 and 8, but vista as well...

I'm having issues here as well, windows update failed with an obscure error code. Might have to do with a bits issue on my existing machine, or could be a corrupt file...

Windows 7 Home Premium started the process then reverted back to 7 Home. Noticed that there were some updates waiting to be installed on shut down. Did that, going to have another go at it.

The Windows 10 app also said that it was downloading. Thought the 6.5 GB was all that was necessary. It is inviting me to view the download progress bar, but nothing happening, and the Task Manger is not showing any network activity.

I think that's at the heart of my problem. To be fair I was having Windows Update problems in Windows 8, but I hoped the upgrade might solve them. It looks like the upgrade relies on Windows Update, which is why I've had so many issues.

At the moment, I can't even activate Windows, so I'm on the phone to Microsoft.

Had to install updates twice under Windows 7.

Clicked the Win 10 app it asked me to try again noting the windows failure.

Now downloading 2.7 GB of info. This did not happen the first time.

Interesting. Acer Veriton X 275 is not listed as being supported for an upgrade to Win. 10

To be fair I was having Windows Update problems in Windows 8

I've had ***a lot*** of Windows Update and BITS problems, and other problems for services that run in the same process. This is in Windows 8.1 on multiple machines. One of the problems in trying to get these things working again is that a normal shutdown / restart is a "hybrid" one, which means it basically saves the state of things and comes back up to that point (at the level of Windows). Thus, even process IDs will be the same.

Two things have generally worked for me:

1) Use the command line shutdown: shutdown /r /f /t 0
The /r is the main option, as it bypasses the hybrid restart.

2) Figure out the process (PID) in which the Windows Update (or other offending) service is running - it's always been a service in the same process that's given me problems. Use Task Manager to kill the process - i.e. *not* stop the service(s). Then do the restart.

Maybe this will help someone,

Donnie

I get an error that ends in A000 I forget the first bit, and am not in front of the pc.

I restarted the windows update and bits services, rebooted, and told it to try again. Will remote in again here in a little bit and see if it succeeded.
